There is no federal whole house generator tax credit for a conventional standby unit running on natural gas, propane, or diesel, and there never has been. Federal clean energy credits that once reached certain backup power equipment (battery storage and fuel cells) ended for installations placed in service after December 31, 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. If it’s used for business, Section 179 may apply. And a narrow credit for bidirectional EV chargers remains available through June 30, 2026.
Why a Standard Generator Doesn’t Qualify
The federal residential energy credits were written to promote renewable generation and efficiency upgrades, not general backup power. A generator that burns fuel to produce electricity during an outage does neither. It isn’t renewable, and it doesn’t improve the home’s efficiency.
The qualifying categories under the Residential Clean Energy Credit were specific: solar, wind, geothermal heat pumps, fuel cells, and battery storage.2Internal Revenue Service. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit covered insulation, windows, doors, heat pumps, and certain HVAC and electrical panel work, and it never covered generators either.3Internal Revenue Service. What Ended After 2025
Two credits that could reach certain kinds of backup power ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Both matter only if you installed qualifying equipment before that date.
The Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) covered 30% of the cost of qualifying property, with no annual dollar cap for most categories.2Internal Revenue Service. Residential Clean Energy Credit Two categories were relevant to whole-house backup:
- Battery storage technology with a capacity of at least 3 kilowatt-hours qualified, even without paired solar. The 30% credit reached the battery, inverters, wiring, and installation labor.2Internal Revenue Service. Residential Clean Energy Credit
- Fuel cell property that reached at least 30% efficiency and 0.5 kilowatts of capacity qualified, with the credit capped at $500 per half-kilowatt.2Internal Revenue Service. Residential Clean Energy Credit

Claiming the Credit for a Pre-2026 Installation
If you installed qualifying battery storage or fuel cell property before January 1, 2026, the 30% credit is still on the table for your 2025 return. Eligible costs include equipment, wiring, inverters, and installation labor.2Internal Revenue Service. Residential Clean Energy Credit

Keep documentation in case of an audit:
- An itemized invoice from the installer separating qualifying equipment from any non-qualifying components.
- The manufacturer’s certification statement, including the Qualified Manufacturer Identification Number required on Form 5695.
- Proof of payment: canceled checks, bank statements, or credit card records.
- Documentation that the system was placed in service before January 1, 2026.
Medical Expense Deduction When a Generator Is Medically Necessary
If you or someone in your household relies on electrically powered medical equipment, part of the cost of a whole-house generator may be deductible as a medical expense on Schedule A. This applies regardless of the fuel type. The IRS treats equipment installed in a home for the primary purpose of medical care as a capital medical expense.6Internal Revenue Service. The math works like this: subtract any increase in your home’s value from the total cost of the generator. The remainder is deductible. If the generator adds nothing to the property’s value, the full cost is deductible.6Internal Revenue Service. Publication 502, Medical and Dental Expenses In practice, a whole-house generator usually adds some value, so you’d deduct only the portion that exceeds the increase.
A few conditions apply. Medical care must be the primary purpose of the installation, which realistically means physician documentation that continuous power is necessary for life-sustaining or essential medical equipment. Ongoing operation and maintenance costs also qualify as medical expenses if the primary purpose remains medical care.6Internal Revenue Service. Section 179 Deduction for Business Use
A generator used primarily for business can be deducted immediately under Section 179. This isn’t a credit; it reduces taxable income rather than tax owed. The 2026 Section 179 limit is $2,560,000, well above any generator’s cost.
The IRS classifies generators as tangible personal property in the machinery and equipment category, which is eligible for Section 179 expensing.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 946, How To Depreciate Property To qualify, the generator must be purchased (not leased), placed in service during the tax year of the deduction, and used for business more than 50% of the time.
That last condition is where home-based claims usually get scrutinized. A generator powering an entire house while a home office occupies 15% of the square footage is unlikely to clear the 50% threshold. A generator dedicated to a detached workshop, a commercial building, or a business with substantial power needs is a stronger case. Bidirectional EV Charger Credit Through June 2026
For EV owners, one federal credit still applies to equipment that can back up a home. The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit under Section 30C covers bidirectional charging equipment, which can pull power from an electric vehicle’s battery to supply the house during an outage.9Internal Revenue Service. The credit is 30% of the equipment cost, up to $1,000 per charging unit, for property placed in service at your main home through June 30, 2026.9Internal Revenue Service. Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit There is a location requirement: the property must sit in an eligible census tract, meaning either a low-income community or a non-urban area as defined by the Census Bureau.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit Many suburban addresses won’t qualify. Check your census tract on the Department of Energy’s alternative fuels station locator before you buy.
State and Local Incentives
Several states run their own tax credits, rebates, or performance-based programs for residential battery storage, even where no federal credit applies. Structures vary: some pay upfront rebates based on battery capacity, some offer a state tax credit, and some pay for performance during grid emergencies. Values range from modest amounts to well over $10,000 depending on the state, the battery size, household income, and local wildfire or reliability risk.
Programs change often and can run out of funding mid-year. Check your state energy office or public utility commission website for current availability, and ask your utility about any separate rebates it offers for battery storage.
