Maryland goes to Ogden for individual transcripts but to Kansas City for business transcripts, for example. Check the correct chart for the return type you’re requesting.1Internal Revenue Service. Mail or Fax: Which to Choose
Faxing gets the form to the IRS almost immediately, which is why most people prefer it. The tradeoff is image quality. If the fax comes through with a blurry signature or an unreadable field, the form gets rejected. A clean scan sent through an internet fax service usually holds up better than a paper copy fed through an office machine.
Mailing is slower but lets you use certified mail for proof of delivery, which matters if you need to document exactly when the request was submitted. Either way, the IRS says most requests are processed within 10 business days of receipt.4Internal Revenue Service. Request for Transcript of Tax Return – Form 4506-T Add delivery time on top of that for the transcript itself to reach you or the third party listed on Line 5.
Sending the form to the wrong processing center doesn’t get you a formal rejection, but it does add weeks while the IRS reroutes it internally. So does an unchecked authorization box above the signature line, a signature more than 120 days old when the form arrives, or a mismatch between the name, SSN, or address on the form and what the IRS has on file for that year.4Internal Revenue Service. Request for Transcript of Tax Return – Form 4506-T If you moved after filing, put the old address (the one on the return) on Line 4.

If a Mortgage Lender Sent You the Form
If a mortgage lender or bank gave you the form to sign, look at the form number. Since March 2021, all requests submitted through the Income Verification Express Service (IVES) must use Form 4506-C, not Form 4506-T. The IRS rejects 4506-T submissions that come through IVES.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-C Frequently Asked Questions With Form 4506-C, the lender handles the submission electronically through IVES; you sign the authorization but don’t mail anything yourself.8Internal Revenue Service. The IRS acknowledges these requests within 30 days, though actual processing has recently averaged over 600 days.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Requesting Copy of Fraudulent Returns
