Where to Mail Form 709: USPS, Private Delivery, and Deadlines

If you’re mailing a completed Form 709 through the U.S. Postal Service, send it to the Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center, Kansas City, MO 64999. That single address handles every mailed gift tax return in the country, regardless of the state you live in or whether you’re enclosing a payment.1Internal Revenue Service. USPS Address for Form 709

Use this address if you’re dropping the return in a mailbox or at the post office:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service Center
Kansas City, MO 649992Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 709

No street number is needed. The IRS uses a dedicated ZIP code that routes directly to its processing facility.

Private Delivery Service Address

FedEx, UPS, and DHL Express can’t deliver to the ZIP code above because it points to a P.O. box. If you’re using an approved private carrier, send the return to the street address:

Internal Revenue Service
333 W. Pershing Road
Kansas City, MO 641082Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 709

Not every FedEx or UPS service qualifies for the “timely mailing is timely filing” rule. Only specific service levels count, including FedEx Priority Overnight, UPS Next Day Air, and DHL Express. The IRS publishes the full approved list.3Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services If you pick a service that isn’t on it, your filing date is the day the IRS receives the package, not the day you handed it to the carrier.

Amended Form 709 Goes Somewhere Else

If you’re correcting or adding information to a return you already filed, don’t send the amended return to Kansas City. It goes to Kentucky:

Internal Revenue Service Center
Attn: E&G, Stop 824G
7940 Kentucky Drive
Florence, KY 41042-29152Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 709

The Florence address works for both USPS and approved private delivery services.

Proving You Filed on Time

A traceable mailing method matters if the IRS ever claims your return arrived late. USPS Certified Mail with Return Receipt Requested is the low-cost standard. For USPS, the postmark date is your filing date. For approved private carriers, the date the carrier records receiving your package counts as the filing date under the timely mailing rule.4Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Service Notice 2016-30 – Designation of Private Delivery Services

Whichever method you use, keep the receipt with your copy of the return.

You Can Skip the Mail Entirely

Form 709 can be filed electronically through the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system. E-filing eliminates any question about which address to use, gives you an instant confirmation of receipt, and lets you authorize a bank withdrawal for any tax owed at the same time.5Internal Revenue Service. Modernized e-File (MeF) for Gift Taxes You’ll need to work through a tax professional who is an authorized IRS e-file provider. Consumer tax software doesn’t handle self-prepared Form 709 e-filing the way it does Form 1040.

The Filing Deadline

Form 709 is due April 15 of the year after you make the gift. A gift made in 2025 needs to be reported by April 15, 2026. The deadline lines up with the individual income tax filing date.6Internal Revenue Service. Filing Estate and Gift Tax Returns

Filing Form 4868 to extend your income tax return automatically extends Form 709 by six months, to October 15.7Internal Revenue Service. Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return If you don’t need an income tax extension but want more time for the gift tax return, file Form 8892 for the same six-month extension of Form 709 alone.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8892

Either extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any gift tax owed is still due by April 15, and interest and penalties start accruing the next day if you haven’t paid.7Internal Revenue Service. Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return If the donor dies before filing, the executor of the estate takes over responsibility for the return.9eCFR. 26 CFR 25.6019-1 – Persons Required to File Returns

What Goes in the Envelope

Sign the return before you seal it. The donor’s signature is required.

If you’re electing gift splitting with your spouse, the mechanics have changed. Your spouse no longer signs the return itself. Instead, the consenting spouse signs a separate Notice of Consent that gets attached to your filed return, with a dated statement that your spouse agrees to treat all gifts to third parties as made one-half by each spouse.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 709 If both spouses are filing their own Form 709, each return needs a signed Notice of Consent from the other spouse attached.

Non-cash gifts need supporting documentation. Real estate, business interests, and artwork should have a formal appraisal attached. For gifts to trusts, include a copy of the trust instrument or, at minimum, a detailed description of the trust terms. Thorough documentation isn’t just paperwork: it starts the three-year statute of limitations clock on IRS challenges to the values you reported.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6501 – Limitations on Assessment and Collection

Make a complete copy of the signed return and every attachment before mailing the original. If the IRS ever loses the return or asks whether you filed, that copy is your proof.

Form 3520 Doesn’t Go With Form 709

If you transferred property to a foreign trust, you may also need to file Form 3520. It is not filed with Form 709. It has its own deadline (generally April 15) and its own address: Internal Revenue Service Center, P.O. Box 409101, Ogden, UT 84409.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 3520 An income tax extension also extends the Form 3520 deadline.

Paying the Tax

Most people who file Form 709 owe nothing, because their reported gifts fall within the lifetime exemption. If you do owe, the IRS accepts several payment methods.

IRS Direct Pay lets you pay directly from a bank account with no fees. When you set up the payment, select Form 709 as the return type.12Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is another electronic option, though it requires advance enrollment.6Internal Revenue Service. Filing Estate and Gift Tax Returns

You can also enclose a check or money order with your mailed return. Make it payable to “United States Treasury,” write your Social Security number and “Form 709” on the memo line, and put it in the same envelope as the return.13Internal Revenue Service. About Form 709, United States Gift and Generation-Skipping Transfer Tax Return Paying electronically before you mail is cleaner. It removes the risk of a check being separated from the return in processing, and once payment is confirmed you can drop the envelope in the mail without a second thought.
