On almost every IRS form that involves a business, nonprofit, estate, or trust, the Employer Identification Number sits in the identifying-information block at the top of page 1, formatted as XX-XXXXXXX. The exact item letter changes from form to form, and a few widely repeated references online point to the wrong line, so if you’re trying to find the EIN on tax returns, W-2s, or 1099s, the safest approach is to know the specific spot on each form you have in hand.
Corporate and Partnership Returns
Form 1120, the U.S. Corporation Income Tax Return, places the EIN at Item B in the header block on page 1, next to the corporation’s name and address.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1120 (2025) The instructions also require the EIN on every attached schedule or supporting statement.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1120 (2025) – Section: Name and Address S-corporations filing Form 1120-S use the same layout, and foreign corporations filing Form 1120-F enter the EIN in the identifying-information block at the top of page 1 alongside name and address.3Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 1120-F
Form 1065, the U.S. Return of Partnership Income, puts the EIN at Item D, right after the business code number and before the date the business started.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1065 U.S. Return of Partnership Income (2025) If a source tells you the EIN is on “Line A” of Form 1065, that’s wrong. Line A asks for the principal business activity.
Nonprofit and Fiduciary Returns
Form 990, filed by tax-exempt organizations, shows the EIN at Item D on page 1, just below the organization’s name and “doing business as” lines.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 990 Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax (2025) Every exempt organization needs its own EIN, including subordinate chapters within a larger group.6Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 990
Estates and trusts file Form 1041, and the EIN appears at Item C in the header on page 1.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 1041 U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts (2025) The estate or trust needs its own EIN, separate from the decedent’s or any beneficiary’s Social Security Number. If the fiduciary has applied but the number hasn’t arrived by the filing deadline, the instructions say to write “Applied for” and the application date in the EIN space.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1041 and Schedules A, B, G, J, and K-1 – Section: Employer Identification Number
W-2s and Payroll Tax Returns
For an employee looking up an employer’s EIN, the fastest place is Box b on Form W-2, clearly labeled “Employer identification number (EIN)” near the top of the form.9Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) If the paper copy is gone but you filed electronically, your tax software usually has it stored.
On Form 941, the Employer’s Quarterly Federal Tax Return, the EIN sits at the very top of page 1 in the field labeled “Employer identification number (EIN),” above the employer’s name.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 941 Employers Quarterly Federal Tax Return (Rev. March 2026)
Schedule C, K-1s, and 1099s
A personal Form 1040 uses a Social Security Number, but several schedules and information slips attached to it carry an EIN.
Schedule C
On Schedule C, your SSN goes at the top, and Line D is reserved for an EIN. The label reads “Employer ID number (EIN).”11Internal Revenue Service. Schedule C (Form 1040) 2025 Profit or Loss From Business Not every sole proprietor has one. The IRS only requires an EIN if you have employees, sponsor a retirement plan, or file certain excise-tax returns; without any of those, you leave Line D blank.12Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) (2025) – Section: Specific Instructions Don’t put your SSN on Line D, and don’t copy an EIN from a 1099 you received.
Schedule K-1
Every current K-1 puts the issuing entity’s EIN at Item A of Part I:
- Partnership K-1 from Form 1065: Part I, Item A, “Partnership’s employer identification number.”13Internal Revenue Service. Schedule K-1 (Form 1065) 2025
- S-corporation K-1 from Form 1120-S: Part I, Item A, “Corporation’s employer identification number.”14Internal Revenue Service. Schedule K-1 (Form 1120-S) 2024
- Estate or trust K-1 from Form 1041: Part I, Item A, “Estate’s or trust’s employer identification number.”15Internal Revenue Service. Schedule K-1 (Form 1041) 2025
Older guides sometimes point to “Box C or Box D” for the entity EIN on a K-1. Those are outdated. All three current forms use Item A in Part I.
Form 1099-NEC
On a 1099-NEC, the payer’s federal identification number, usually an EIN, sits in the upper-left section of the form in the box labeled “PAYER’S TIN.” The recipient’s TIN appears in a separate box on the right side.
How to Retrieve an EIN You Can’t Find
If the number isn’t on any return you can lay hands on, the recovery path depends on whose EIN you need.
Your Own Entity
The single best document is the CP 575 notice the IRS mailed when it originally assigned the number. The IRS issues that notice only once and won’t produce a duplicate, so keep it in a permanent file.16Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number Beyond that, previously filed returns, bank account opening documents, and IRS correspondence about the entity’s tax status all typically show the EIN in the header.
If those are gone, you have two IRS-provided options. Eligible business owners can log in to their IRS business tax account online and pull a business entity transcript, which shows the EIN on file.17Internal Revenue Service. Get a Business Tax Transcript Or you can call the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. After verifying identity and authority over the entity, the agent can give you the EIN by phone or fax a Letter 147C confirming it. Only an owner, corporate officer, trustee, or someone with a power of attorney on file can make this request.18Taxpayer Advocate Service. Getting an EIN
The 147C letter replaces the original CP 575 when a bank or licensing agency wants proof of your EIN. A mailed request takes four to six weeks.16Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number
Someone Else’s Entity
For a nonprofit, the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search lets you look up any registered tax-exempt entity by name, and the tool includes copies of recent 990 returns with the EIN on the first page.19Internal Revenue Service. Tax Exempt Organization Search
For a publicly traded company, annual reports (10-K) and quarterly reports (10-Q) on the SEC’s EDGAR database contain the EIN. You can search by company name or ticker symbol.20SEC.gov. EDGAR Full Text Search
Why the Correct EIN Matters Before You File
A wrong or missing EIN on a filed information return isn’t a clerical shrug. The IRS matches the EIN against its records, and a mismatch triggers a CP2100 or CP2100A notice to the payer, followed by required backup-withholding steps if the payee doesn’t respond.21Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2100 or CP2100A Notice Per-return penalties for a wrong or missing TIN start at $60 if corrected within 30 days and climb to $340 after August 1, with intentional disregard reaching $680 per return and no annual cap.22Internal Revenue Service. 20.1.7 Information Return Penalties Across a batch of 1099s, that adds up quickly. The standard defense is a completed Form W-9 from every vendor before the first payment, so the EIN on your information returns matches the one in IRS records.
