Where Is AGI on a Tax Transcript: Correct Line and Mismatches

On an IRS Tax Return Transcript, your Adjusted Gross Income appears on the line labeled “ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME,” which corresponds to Line 11 of Form 1040.1Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income The transcript uses descriptive text labels rather than line numbers, so scan for that phrase in capital letters. On a Record of Account Transcript, the same figure sits under the same label near the top, in the return-information section that precedes the transaction history.

Pull the Right Transcript First

The IRS issues five free transcript types, and only two of them display AGI as a clearly labeled figure.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them For most purposes, the Tax Return Transcript is the one to request. It mirrors your original Form 1040 line by line and is the document lenders, financial aid offices, and the IRS itself expect. It’s available for the current year and the three prior tax years.

The Record of Account Transcript combines the Tax Return Transcript with the Tax Account Transcript. Choose it only when you need to see both your original figures and any IRS-initiated changes made after you filed.

The other three transcripts won’t answer the question. The Tax Account Transcript summarizes account activity like filing status and payments rather than the full set of return line items. The Wage and Income Transcript reproduces data from W-2s and 1099s but contains no computed figures. The Verification of Non-Filing Letter carries no income data at all.

Reading the Line: AGI vs. Taxable Income

On a Tax Return Transcript, look for “ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME” in the return-information block. AGI has been on Line 11 of Form 1040 since the form was redesigned in 2019, and that placement has held through the 2025 tax year filed in 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. Adjusted Gross Income

A few lines below AGI, the transcript displays “TAXABLE INCOME.” That’s a smaller number because it reflects your AGI after the standard or itemized deduction. If a lender, school, or tax software asks for AGI, read the ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME line and not the taxable income line below it. This is the most common misread on the page.

On a Record of Account Transcript, the same label appears in the return-information section at the top. The section below that is a transaction history full of codes and dates for payments, penalties, interest, and credits. None of that is income-calculation data, so ignore it when you’re just after the AGI.

When the Transcript AGI Doesn’t Match What You Filed

If the number on the transcript isn’t what you remember reporting, the usual explanation is an IRS adjustment. A Tax Return Transcript shows your return only as originally filed and won’t reflect changes the IRS made afterward.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them To see both the original figures and any post-filing changes in one document, request the Record of Account Transcript instead.

The same gap applies to amended returns. Corrections you made on Form 1040-X won’t appear on the Tax Return Transcript. The Record of Account or Tax Account Transcript will reflect the amendment once the IRS finishes processing it.

There’s also a more serious scenario. If the transcript shows a return you don’t recognize, someone may have filed fraudulently using your Social Security number. If the IRS has already flagged the return and sent you Letter 5071C, 4883C, or 5747C, follow the instructions in that letter to verify your identity and do not file Form 14039. If you discovered the problem on your own without a letter, file a paper return with a completed Form 14039 attached.3Internal Revenue Service. How IRS ID Theft Victim Assistance Works
