When Do Banks Send 1099-INT: $10 Threshold and January 31 Deadline

Banks must send Form 1099-INT to account holders by January 31 of the year after the interest was paid. For the 2025 tax year, that deadline falls on a Saturday, so the actual due date shifts to Monday, February 2, 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. The $10 Threshold That Decides Whether a Form Is Sent

A bank, credit union, or brokerage is required to issue a 1099-INT for any account that paid you $10 or more in interest during the calendar year.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-INT, Interest Income That floor applies to each institution separately, not to your interest across all your accounts combined. Three savings accounts at three different banks that each paid $8 will generate zero forms, because none of the banks crossed the threshold on its own.

The threshold controls paperwork, not tax. You are still required to report every dollar of taxable interest, even amounts under $10 and even when no form ever arrives.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received The IRS receives a copy of every 1099-INT that does get filed, so leaving out interest from an account that did cross $10 is the kind of thing their matching system catches quickly.

The Standard January 31 Deadline

The IRS rule is that payers must furnish Form 1099-INT to recipients by January 31 of the year after the tax year in question.2Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2025) When January 31 lands on a weekend, the deadline moves to the next business day. That is what happens with 2025 forms: January 31, 2026, is a Saturday, so the actual due date is Monday, February 2, 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. “Furnish” covers both paper mailing and electronic delivery. Many institutions post forms to their online document portal a week or two before they drop the paper copy in the mail, so checking your account online is often the fastest way to get the form in hand.

Why Brokerage Statements Arrive Later

Brokerages that report interest, dividends, and securities sales on a single consolidated statement operate on a later deadline. Under Treasury regulations, they have until February 15 to send that combined statement.5GovInfo. 26 CFR 1.6045-1 – Requirement and Time for Furnishing Statement In 2026, February 15 is a Sunday, pushing the actual delivery date to February 17.2Internal Revenue Service. Brokerages can also request an additional 30-day extension from the IRS, which is why some consolidated statements do not appear until mid-March. If your interest comes from both a regular bank account and a brokerage, expect two forms on two different timelines. The bank form should arrive by early February; the brokerage statement can take another two to six weeks.

What To Do If Your 1099-INT Never Arrives

If mid-February rolls around and you have nothing from a bank where you know you earned interest, work through a short checklist before assuming the form is lost.

Start by confirming the account actually crossed $10 for the year. Your December statement or year-end summary will show total interest credited, and if the number is under $10 the bank was not required to send anything. Next, log in and check the bank’s online tax document section. Electronic copies often appear there before paper forms are mailed, and some institutions default to electronic-only delivery unless you opted into paper.

If the form should have been issued and there is no sign of it, call the bank. Confirm the mailing address on file and ask when the form was sent. That call usually clears things up within a few days.

If you need to file and the form still hasn’t arrived, use your year-end statement to calculate the interest yourself and report that figure on your return.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received Filing with an accurate number from your own records is fine. If the form later shows up with a different amount, file Form 1040-X to correct the difference.

Past the end of February with nothing in hand and no help from the bank, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and ask them to contact the institution.6Internal Revenue Service. What To Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

When the Form Arrives With Wrong Numbers

If the interest figure on your 1099-INT does not match your records, or the form shows an outdated address or Social Security number, contact the issuing bank and ask for a corrected form. The bank will issue a replacement with the “CORRECTED” box checked at the top and send an updated copy to the IRS at the same time.6Internal Revenue Service. What To Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

If the bank refuses to fix the mistake or won’t act before your filing deadline, report the correct number on your return based on your own records. The IRS matching system will flag the difference, but as long as your figure is accurate and you can back it up with account statements, you can resolve the discrepancy when they reach out.

You Owe Tax on the Interest Either Way

One point worth being direct about: the arrival of a 1099-INT does not create your tax obligation, and its absence does not eliminate it. Every dollar of taxable interest belongs on your return regardless of whether a form was issued.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 403, Interest Received If a small account paid $6 in interest and no form is coming, that $6 still gets reported. If your form is late, you still need to file on time using the best number you can pull from your statements. The deadline the bank has to meet is not the deadline you have to meet.
