What Tax Years Can Still Be E-Filed: Refund Window and Shutdown Dates

In 2026, the tax years that can be e-filed are 2023, 2024, and 2025. The IRS Modernized e-File system accepts the current tax year plus the two immediately preceding years, and nothing older. A return for tax year 2022 or earlier has to go on paper.1Internal Revenue Service. Electronic Filing (e-file) – FAQs

This window rolls forward every January. When the 2027 filing season opens, tax year 2023 drops out of the system and tax year 2026 takes its place. The IRS shuts down the validation protocols for older years, so any electronic submission outside the three-year window is automatically rejected.

How to E-File a Return for 2023 or 2024

Eligibility is one thing; finding software that will actually transmit an older return is another. Most commercial tax programs sell only the current-year edition, so preparing a 2023 or 2024 return usually means buying a prior-year version from a vendor that still supports it, or working with an Authorized IRS e-file Provider whose professional software covers all three eligible years.

Whatever software you use, it has to match the exact tax year you’re filing. Brackets, standard deduction amounts, and credit thresholds change every year, and the IRS will reject a return built on the wrong year’s rules.

Why the Three-Year Window Matters for Refunds

The e-file window and the refund claim window aren’t the same rule, but they overlap in a way that catches people. Federal law gives you three years from the date you filed your original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, to claim a credit or refund.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund If you never filed the return at all, the clock runs from the original due date.12Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund

So an unfiled 2022 return that would have generated a refund needs to be in by April 15, 2026, or the refund is forfeited permanently. That return is also outside the e-file window, so it has to be mailed, on the correct 2022 forms, with proof of mailing. If you owe rather than being owed, there’s no deadline that extinguishes the debt; the IRS can assess penalties and interest on an unfiled return indefinitely.

The Annual E-File Shutdown

The Modernized e-File system goes offline for a few weeks each winter for maintenance and filing-season preparation. For the 2026 season, MeF shut down on December 26, 2025 and reopened for business returns on January 13, 2026, with individual returns following on January 26, 2026.13Internal Revenue Service – IRS.gov. Modernized e-File (MeF) Status During that window, most tax software will let you prepare and queue a return, but it won’t transmit until the system is back up. Worth remembering if a deadline lands in late December or early January.

State Returns Are on Their Own Schedule

The federal three-year rule does not control state returns. Every state runs its own electronic filing system with its own list of accepted prior years. Some accept more years than the IRS; some accept fewer. You may end up e-filing a state return for a year you had to paper-file federally, or the reverse. Check your state’s department of revenue for the years it accepts electronically and for the correct forms if you need to file on paper.
