A TRN number, or Taxpayer Registration Number, is a unique nine-digit identifier that Jamaica’s Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) assigns to every individual and business for tracking tax obligations and conducting official business in the country.1Tax Administration Jamaica. Tax Registration Number (TRN) The term is also used in Ireland, South Africa, Malta, Egypt, Bahrain, and Oman. In the United States, the same function is handled by a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), which comes in several forms: the Social Security Number, the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and the Employer Identification Number.2Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Identification Numbers Which one you need depends entirely on which country’s tax system you’re dealing with, and the two systems don’t cross over.
Which Number You Actually Need
Jamaica issues one universal TRN that follows a taxpayer through every interaction with the tax system, from filing returns to opening a bank account, registering a vehicle, or importing goods.1Tax Administration Jamaica. Tax Registration Number (TRN) Almost no official business in Jamaica gets done without one.
The U.S. splits the same job across several numbers, and applying for the wrong one is a common reason applications get rejected. In short: citizens, permanent residents, and authorized workers use a Social Security Number; foreign filers who owe U.S. tax but can’t get an SSN use an ITIN; businesses use an EIN.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply for a Jamaica TRN
Tax Administration Jamaica handles every TRN application. The route depends on whether you’re inside the country or applying from abroad.
Applying in Person in Jamaica
Submit a completed application form at the Taxpayer Registration Centre or your nearest tax collectorate. As an individual, bring one of the following: a passport, a driver’s license, or a national ID paired with a birth certificate. Self-employed applicants also need their NIS card, and if the trade name differs from the personal name, a Business Name Registration Certificate.1Tax Administration Jamaica. Tax Registration Number (TRN) Only originals or certified copies are accepted.
Applying From Overseas
Start on TAJ’s website by creating a login and selecting the “apply for TRN” link. After completing the web form, print and sign it, then mail it to the Taxpayer Registration Centre at 116 East Street, Kingston, along with a notarized copy of your passport or driver’s license. If your identification isn’t in English, include an official translation. Your TRN card gets mailed to the address on the application.1Tax Administration Jamaica. Tax Registration Number (TRN)
U.S. Taxpayer Identification Numbers and How to Get One
If your search for a TRN really points to the U.S. system, here’s what each number does and how to apply.
Social Security Number
The SSN is the most common U.S. taxpayer number, issued by the Social Security Administration to citizens, permanent residents, and certain authorized workers. If you’re eligible for one, the IRS expects you to use it for all tax purposes; you won’t qualify for any other type of TIN.3Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number Requirement You apply through the Social Security Administration (not the IRS), starting online at ssa.gov and finishing at a local SSA office with your documents. There’s no fee.4Social Security Administration. What Does It Cost to Get a Social Security Card SSNs don’t expire.
Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
An ITIN is a nine-digit IRS number for people who owe U.S. federal tax but can’t get an SSN, typically nonresident aliens filing a return, their spouses claimed as dependents, and nonresidents claiming tax treaty benefits. It does not authorize work in the U.S. and doesn’t function as ID outside the federal tax system.5Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
Apply with Form W-7, submitted alongside your federal tax return and documents proving your identity and foreign status.6Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply for an ITIN A passport is the only single document that proves both. Without one, you’ll need two or more documents from the IRS’s accepted list, which includes national ID cards, driver’s licenses, civil birth certificates, voter registration cards, and visas.7Internal Revenue Service. Revised Application Standards for ITINs Three submission options:
- By mail, sending Form W-7 with your tax return and original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. Notarized copies aren’t accepted. Processing runs seven to eleven weeks.8Internal Revenue Service. Obtaining an ITIN From Abroad
- Through a Certifying Acceptance Agent, who can authenticate most documents at your appointment and return them to you rather than making you mail originals.6Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply for an ITIN
- At an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, where staff verify your documents in person, though the application still gets mailed for processing.6Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply for an ITIN
The IRS charges no fee. Any costs come from third parties, such as a CAA’s fee or postage.
Employer Identification Number
The EIN identifies a business entity. Any person other than an individual, including corporations, partnerships, trusts, and estates, needs one. Sole proprietors who hire employees or run certain business types also need one.3Internal Revenue Service. U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number Requirement Applying online at irs.gov is the fastest option: if approved, the IRS issues the EIN immediately. The online form must be completed in one session and times out after 15 minutes of inactivity. You can also apply by phone, fax, or mail. There’s no fee, and the IRS warns against third-party sites that charge for EIN applications. You can apply for only one EIN per responsible party per day.9Internal Revenue Service. Two Specialized Numbers
Two narrower categories exist. An Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number (ATIN) is a temporary nine-digit number for a child in a domestic or foreign adoption when adoptive parents can’t obtain the child’s SSN before finalization; the IRS deactivates it within two years of issuance. A Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) is required for anyone who prepares federal tax returns for compensation.10Internal Revenue Service. PTIN Requirements for Tax Return Preparers
ITIN Expiration
SSNs and EINs don’t expire, but ITINs do. If you don’t use your ITIN on a federal tax return for three consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 following that third year. Filing with an expired ITIN can delay processing and block certain tax credits, which may shrink your refund or trigger penalties and interest.11Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN
You don’t need to renew if you’ve since gotten an SSN; just stop using the ITIN. You also don’t need to renew if your ITIN only appears on information returns like Form 1099 for payments you receive, since expired ITINs still work there.11Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN If you’re going to file a return, renew before filing season.
What Happens If You Don’t Have One or Give the Wrong Number
Skipping the requirement carries real cost. For individuals, payers of interest, dividends, and certain other income must apply a flat 24% backup withholding when you fail to provide a correct TIN. The withheld amount is credited against your tax bill, but any excess only comes back once you file a return.12Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 307, Backup Withholding
Businesses face separate penalties for information returns filed with missing or incorrect TINs. For 2026, the penalty runs from $60 per return filed up to 30 days late to $340 per return filed after August 1 or not at all. Intentional disregard is $680 per return with no maximum.13Internal Revenue Service. Information Return Penalties Across a stack of 1099s, that adds up quickly.
