A RUT number in Chile is the country’s tax identification number — Rol Único Tributario — issued by the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII) to every person and entity that earns income, invests, or does business in Chile. You obtain one by filing Form F4415 with the SII, submitting a passport or company incorporation documents, and, if you don’t live in Chile, appointing a local representative. The number is permanent, and you only ever get one.
What the Number Looks Like
A RUT is written as xx.xxx.xxx-x: a serial number, a hyphen, and a single check digit. That last character can be any digit from 0 to 9, or the letter K when the verification algorithm produces 10. When it produces 11, the check digit is 0.1OECD. Chile – Tax Identification Number The check digit exists so that typos and fabricated numbers can be caught quickly.
For Chilean citizens and residents, the RUT is the same sequence of digits as the RUN (Rol Único Nacional) printed on the national ID card. Two different agencies issue them — the civil registry for the RUN, the SII for the RUT — but the number itself is identical. Companies and other legal entities get a RUT only, since they have no national identity number.
Who Needs One
Chilean citizens receive a RUT automatically through the national ID process. Everyone else who participates in Chile’s formal economy has to apply:
- Foreign residents with a Chilean visa who work, pay taxes, or open a bank account.
- Non-resident investors buying shares, real estate, or other assets in Chile, even if they never move there.2Servicio de Impuestos Internos. RUT and Start of Activities
- Foreign companies conducting business or investing in Chile.
- Foreign individuals acting as legal representatives for a company or another person in Chile, who must register a separate RUT for that role.3Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Foreign Investor Requirements
What You Use It For
The RUT functions as both a taxpayer ID and a general identifier for formal transactions. You need it to file and pay taxes, open a bank account, sign contracts, take a formal job, buy property, form a company, or import goods. Public services and government benefits are tied to it as well. Without a RUT, meaningful interaction with Chilean institutions is essentially blocked.
RUT Registration Is Not the Same as Starting Activities
This distinction catches many foreign investors. Getting a RUT and declaring “start of activities” (Inicio de Actividades) are two separate filings, and passive investors only need the first.
If your plan is limited to buying shares, real estate, or social rights, a RUT is enough. Declaring start of activities is required when you actively operate a business in Chile — running a trade, providing professional services, opening a branch, or engaging in mining or construction. Foreign companies with an agency, office, or permanent establishment in Chile also declare start of activities.2Servicio de Impuestos Internos. RUT and Start of Activities
The reason the distinction matters: start of activities brings bookkeeping duties, periodic tax filings, and audit exposure. If you only want to buy an apartment in Santiago or hold Chilean equities, you can skip that layer.

Documents You’ll Need
What you bring depends on who’s applying.
- Foreign individuals: a valid passport, plus a Chilean visa authorizing business or economic activity where applicable.4Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Formulario 4415 – Inscripcion al Rol Unico Tributario
- Legal entities formed abroad: company registration documents and articles of incorporation, legalized either by apostille under the Hague Convention or by authentication through a Chilean consulate, depending on the country of origin.5Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Formulario 4415 – Inscripcion al Rol Unico Tributario
- All applicants: proof of a Chilean address for tax correspondence. If you don’t have one, you’ll need a local representative.
The Form and How to File It
The application is Form F4415 (Inscripción al Rol Único Tributario y/o Declaración Jurada de Inicio de Actividades), available from the SII website or at SII offices.4Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Formulario 4415 – Inscripcion al Rol Unico Tributario It collects personal details, contact information, and, for foreigners, the tax ID from your home country. For a legal entity, the form must be signed by a representative whose authority is documented in the incorporation papers or another notarized instrument.5Servicio de Impuestos Internos. You can file in person at an SII office. Some applicant types may be able to file through the SII online portal, though availability depends on your residency status and situation. Processing generally takes anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks while the SII verifies your paperwork.
If You Don’t Live in Chile
Foreign individuals without a Chilean address typically need a local representative or sponsor who lives in Chile and can receive official SII correspondence for them. That person can also file the application on your behalf using a notarized power of attorney, which is how most non-resident investors handle it.5Servicio de Impuestos Internos. After You Have Your RUT
The number is permanent. There is no expiration, no renewal, and each person or company can hold only one, so if you were issued a RUT for an earlier transaction you don’t apply again.2Servicio de Impuestos Internos. RUT and Start of Activities
The information attached to the RUT is a different matter. If you change your address, swap out your local representative, or modify your business activities in Chile, update those records with the SII. Outdated contact details tend to mean missed tax notifications, which turn into larger problems later.
The e-RUT
Once registered, you can access an electronic version called the e-RUT through the SII website. It identifies the taxpayer for tax purposes and is mainly relevant for foreign individuals, foreign companies, and Chilean legal entities. Chilean citizens don’t need one because their Cédula de Identidad already serves that function.6Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Cedula Electronica e-RUT
Checking Someone Else’s RUT
Before signing a Chilean contract or entering a business deal, you can verify the other party’s tax status through the SII’s “Consultar Situación Tributaria de Terceros” tool. It shows whether the RUT is registered and active and flags any irregular tax behavior on record.7Servicio de Impuestos Internos. Consultar Situacion Tributaria de Terceros A mismatched check digit is a simpler warning sign you can catch on your own: if the last character doesn’t match the serial number under the standard algorithm, the number is either mistyped or fabricated, and it’s worth resolving before you proceed.
