In Spain, the NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is the tax identification number the government uses to link you to every financial and legal act you carry out in the country. For foreigners, the NIF in Spain is your NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero): a unique number issued by the Ministry of Interior to any non-Spaniard with economic, professional, or social ties to Spain, and the same number the tax agency uses to identify you.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Tax Identification Number (NIF) If you plan to buy property, work, inherit, invest, or open a bank account in Spain, this is the number you need.
Spanish citizens get their NIF automatically through their DNI (national ID card). Foreigners have to apply.
When You Need One
You need a NIF (in the form of a NIE) if any of these apply to you:
- You’re living in Spain for work, study, or retirement.
- You’re buying, selling, or owning property. The deed, land registry entry, and tax filings all require it.
- You’re a partner, administrator, or director of a Spanish company.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Tax Identification Number (NIF)
- You’re inheriting Spanish assets. Non-resident heirs cannot pay inheritance tax, open a Spanish bank account to receive estate funds, or register inherited property without one.
- You have any economic transaction on Spanish territory, even a one-off contract or investment.
Employment is a hard requirement: you cannot be paid legally in Spain without a NIF, because your employer uses it to withhold tax and register you with social security. Banks require it to open any account. Notaries require it for anything they authorize. Self-employed workers need it to file the census declaration (Form 036) that registers them as autónomos.2Tax Agency. NIF: Assignment of a NIF to Legal Persons and Non-Legal Entities
Every tax return, self-assessment, and communication you send to the Agencia Tributaria has to carry your NIF, whether you’re a resident filing annual income tax or a non-resident filing on Spanish-source income or property.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. How to Apply for the NIE
The standard route is a NIE application, which gives you a number that functions as your NIF for life.
Where to Apply
Inside Spain, you apply at a police station (Comisaría de Policía) or an Immigration Office (Oficina de Extranjeros). You’ll need to book an appointment (cita previa) first, and each family member needs a separate appointment. From abroad, you apply at the nearest Spanish consulate or embassy.3Plataforma ONE. - Documentation supporting the reason you gave, such as a property purchase contract, a job offer, or business paperwork.
If a representative is filing on your behalf, you’ll need a notarized power of attorney. A special power of attorney can be granted specifically for this purpose.6Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Fee
Inside Spain, the fee is €9.84, paid through a Tasa 790 form (código 012) at a bank before your appointment.8National Police Electronic Headquarters. How Long It Takes
Officially, the police or immigration office resolves the application within five business days of receiving it.10National Police Electronic Headquarters. Foreigner – Assignment of NIE Upon Request In practice, the wait that matters is the appointment itself, which can run to weeks in Madrid and Barcelona. Once you’re at the window the number is often assigned the same day and printed on a paper certificate.
If You Need a NIF Before You Have a NIE
There’s an alternative route for foreigners who need a tax number for a specific transaction but don’t yet have a NIE. You can apply directly to the Agencia Tributaria using Form 030 and receive a temporary number called a “NIF M.” This can be submitted remotely through the tax agency’s electronic headquarters, though a person with an existing electronic certificate has to present it on your behalf.11Tax Agency. Form 030 – Application for NIF of a Natural Person Without DNI/NIE – Not in Person
The NIF M is a stopgap. Once you obtain a proper NIE, you have two months to notify the tax agency so it can link your records to the permanent number.1Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. Tax Identification Number (NIF)
Does the NIF Expire?
The NIE number itself is permanent. Once you’re assigned one, it stays with you for life and never changes, even if you leave Spain or let your residency lapse.
The paper certificate you receive is a separate matter. It may carry a printed validity period, often around three months. When the certificate expires the number remains valid, but some institutions will want to see a current document and you may need to request a fresh certificate.
Non-EU residents who obtain a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) hold a card with an expiration date, but the NIE number printed on that card doesn’t change when the card is renewed.
What Happens Without One
Operating in Spain without a NIF when you’re required to have one carries both administrative and practical consequences. Under Spain’s General Tax Law, failing to submit a tax declaration on time carries a flat fine of €200, cut in half if you file late voluntarily before the tax agency contacts you. An incomplete or inaccurate declaration draws a €150 fine, and filing in the wrong format costs €250.12EUR-Lex. Commission v Spain (Obligation to Provide Tax Information)
The practical side is the bigger problem. Without a NIF you cannot register property in your name, pay inheritance tax on Spanish assets, sign anything before a notary, open a bank account, or be paid legally by a Spanish employer. The number is embedded so deeply in the country’s administrative infrastructure that going without one doesn’t just cost you a fine; it locks you out of participating in the system at all.
