“PROC RFND DISB” on your bank statement means a tax agency has processed and disbursed your refund: the return has been reviewed, the refund approved, and the payment released into the banking system. Once you see that line, the money is no longer waiting on the government’s side. Most direct deposits settle in your account within one to two business days of disbursement, depending on how quickly your bank posts incoming ACH credits.
What the Code Actually Says
The line is shorthand for three separate stages of the same transaction. “PROC” is processed, meaning the agency finished reviewing your return and gave final approval to the refund amount. “RFND” is refund, confirming the deposit is an overpayment of taxes coming back to you rather than another type of government payment. “DISB” is disbursed, meaning the agency has actually released the funds.
That last word is the one that matters. A refund can be approved days before it is disbursed. When the full “PROC RFND DISB” code appears on your statement, the agency has already sent an electronic payment instruction through the Automated Clearing House network, and your bank has received it.
Which Agency Sent It
The code tells you what the transaction is but not who sent it. That detail sits in the originator name on the same statement line.
Federal refunds from the IRS appear as “IRS TREAS 310” with a description code of “TAX REF.” The “310” label alone isn’t exclusive to refunds — the IRS uses “IRS TREAS 310” for other federal payments too, so the “TAX REF” description is what confirms this deposit came from a filed return.1Taxpayer Advocate Service. Tax Tip: Direct Deposit from the IRS, But Not Sure What it is For
State refunds are labeled differently depending on the state. You might see “CA FTB REFUND” from California’s Franchise Tax Board or “NY TAX REFUND” from New York. The exact wording varies. This matters if something goes wrong later, because the IRS cannot look into a state refund and a state revenue department cannot investigate a federal one. Check the originator name so you know which agency to contact.
When the Money Becomes Available
Seeing the code doesn’t mean the cash is instantly spendable. There is a short gap between disbursement and posting to your available balance.
ACH transactions can settle within hours on the same business day, or by the next business day.2Nacha. ACH Payments Fact Sheet In practice, most people see a federal refund credited within one to two business days after the IRS marks it as sent. Some banks release funds the same day the ACH credit arrives; others wait until the next morning. Weekends and federal holidays don’t count, since ACH only runs on business days.
If you filed electronically and chose direct deposit, the IRS says most refunds arrive in less than 21 days from the date it accepts the return.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS to Phase Out Paper Tax Refund Checks Starting with Individual Taxpayers That window covers everything from acceptance through review, approval, and disbursement. If you’re already looking at “PROC RFND DISB,” you are at the end of it.
One thing to watch for: if you used Form 8888 to split your refund across two or three accounts, each portion arrives as its own “PROC RFND DISB” deposit rather than a single lump sum.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8888, Allocation of Refund Each individual deposit will be smaller than your total refund, which can cause confusion if you only check one account.
If the Amount Is Smaller Than You Expected
Sometimes the code appears for less money than you calculated on your return. The most common reason is a refund offset, where the government diverts part or all of the refund to cover a debt you owe.
The Treasury Offset Program matches taxpayers who owe delinquent debts with outgoing federal payments, including tax refunds. When there’s a match, the program withholds money from the refund to pay the outstanding balance.5Bureau of the Fiscal Service. Treasury Offset Program Debts that commonly trigger offsets include past-due child support, defaulted federal student loans, and money owed to other federal or state agencies. The creditor agency is required to notify you at least 60 days before submitting your debt to the program.6Bureau of the Fiscal Service. What is the Treasury Offset Program?
The IRS also reduces refunds on its own. If you owe back taxes from a prior year, the IRS can apply your current refund to that balance and send a CP49 notice explaining the adjustment.7Taxpayer Advocate Service. Notice CP49 Overpayment Adjustment – Offset A CP128 notice means the IRS applied an overpayment on your account to another tax period.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP128 Notice If the deposit doesn’t match what you expected, check your mail and your IRS online account for one of these notices before assuming something is wrong.
If the Deposit Never Arrives
If the code hasn’t appeared and the expected timeline has passed, work through the following in order.
Start by rechecking the bank details on your filed return. Pull up the return and confirm the routing number and account number match the account you’re watching. A single wrong digit sends the money somewhere else.
Next, use “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov. The tool shows three stages: return received, refund approved, and refund sent. Once it reaches “Refund Sent,” it gives you a personalized date.9Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund You can check it within 24 hours of the IRS acknowledging an e-filed return. Most states run a similar tracker on their revenue department websites.
Then call your bank. Ask whether there is a pending deposit or an internal hold on an incoming ACH credit. Large deposits into accounts with low balances or limited history sometimes get temporary holds that don’t appear in the available balance.
If the IRS tool says the refund was sent but your bank has nothing, request a refund trace. For direct deposits, wait at least five days after the expected deposit date. You can start a trace through “Where’s My Refund?,” by phone, or by mailing or faxing Form 3911 to the Refund Inquiry Unit for your state.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund
Once a trace is opened, the Treasury Department contacts the financial institution to verify where the money went. Banks have up to 90 days to respond, and full resolution can take up to 120 days. If a direct deposit went to the wrong account because of an error on the return and the bank can’t recover the funds, the IRS cannot force the bank to return them, and it becomes a civil matter between you and the financial institution.11Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18 That outcome is uncommon, but it is why the account and routing numbers on the return need to be right the first time.
