IRS code 977 on your transcript means the IRS has posted an amended or subsequent return to your tax account for that year, replacing the original return record (TC 150) in its system.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes It is not an audit, and it is not the IRS building a Substitute for Return against you. In most cases it simply confirms that a Form 1040-X you (or your preparer) filed has been received and logged. The reason people usually notice it is that the same code triggers an account freeze that holds refunds until processing finishes.
What the Code Actually Signals
The IRS defines TC 977 as “Posted Amended Return / Posted Consolidated / Generated Amended, Late Reply, or DOL Referral.”1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes It posts when the IRS system identifies an incoming return carrying Condition Code G (marking it as amended) or a Form 1040-X within block number range 200–299. When that happens, TC 977 replaces the TC 150 record for the tax period.
One detail confuses almost everyone who reads their transcript for the first time: the dollar amount next to TC 977 is a remittance amount only. It reflects any payment sent in with the amended return. It does not show a change in your tax liability. The actual adjustment to what you owe or what you’re owed shows up later through a separate code in the TC 29X or TC 30X series.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
TC 977 can also be system-generated. If a TC 971 with Action Code 010 or 013 posts to your account, the computer creates a matching TC 977 automatically, without anyone filing an amended return by hand.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes Those action codes come from internal IRS processing.
Why Code 977 Showed Up on Your Account
The plain reason is that you filed a Form 1040-X to correct something on the return you originally sent in: a missed deduction, misreported income, a filing status change. If you recently submitted a 1040-X and now see TC 977, that’s the IRS confirming receipt.
The code also posts when any return arrives for a tax module that already has an original return on file. The IRS classifies TC 977 as a “subsequent return” in that context, which is different from a duplicate (which would post as TC 976).2Internal Revenue Service. IRM 21.5.6 Freeze Codes Less commonly, it shows up for late-filed returns that arrive after the IRS has already taken action on the account, or for Department of Labor referrals related to employee benefit plans.
There’s one scenario where TC 977 is actually welcome news: if the IRS assessed tax against you through a Substitute for Return under 26 U.S.C. § 6020, and you later file your own return, that return can post as TC 977 because it is replacing the existing record.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6020 – Returns Prepared for or Executed by Secretary An SFR almost always overstates liability because it excludes deductions and credits, so your own return typically lowers the number.
The Account Freeze That Comes With It
This is the practical consequence most people care about. When TC 977 posts, the IRS sets an “-A freeze” on your account. The same freeze applies to duplicate returns (TC 976) and certain amended return action codes.2Internal Revenue Service. IRM 21.5.6 Freeze Codes While it’s active, the IRS will not release refunds or allow credits to offset other balances until the amended return has been processed through and the freeze is cleared.
A different freeze, the “E- freeze,” applies when TC 977 posts but no original return (TC 150) exists for that tax period.2Internal Revenue Service. IRM 21.5.6 Freeze Codes This happens when someone files a 1040-X before the original return has been processed, or when the original was rejected or never received. Once the E- freeze sets, the account stays locked until the original posts. The IRS will issue a CP 29 or CP 729 notice about the amended return roughly 19 cycles (about 19 weeks) after the return’s due date if the original still hasn’t arrived.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
If you land in that situation and are certain your original return went in, contact the IRS to trace it. The freeze doesn’t lift on its own without an original return in the system.
How Long the Wait Usually Runs
After TC 977 posts, the IRS still has to review the amended return and make any adjustments. You can check status through the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool on irs.gov roughly three weeks after submission.4Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?
Normal processing runs 8 to 12 weeks, and the IRS warns some returns can take up to 16 weeks.4Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return? Throughout that window, the -A freeze stays in place. You won’t see a refund (TC 846) or a final adjustment until the review finishes and the freeze releases. Calling before the 16-week mark rarely moves anything along unless there’s a specific error on your account.
The Other Codes That Tell You Where You Stand
Reading TC 977 alone tells you very little. The codes around it are what actually describe your situation.
- TC 150. Your original return was filed and tax liability assessed. If TC 150 appears before TC 977, the original is on file and the amended return is being processed normally. If TC 150 is missing, expect the E- freeze described above.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
- TC 29X or TC 30X. These adjustment codes show the actual change to your liability from the amended return. Since TC 977 carries only a remittance amount, the real financial result lives here.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
- TC 806. Credit for withholding from your W-2s and 1099s. Confirms the IRS has accounted for what your employer or payer withheld.
- TC 570. An additional action is pending. When paired with TC 977, it usually means processing has been paused for a closer look. A $0 amount typically means the hold isn’t tied to a money issue.
- TC 846. Refund issued. The date beside it is the date the IRS approved the refund.5Taxpayer Advocate Service. Decoding IRS Transcripts and the New Transcript Format Part II
- TC 420. Your return has been referred to the Examination or Appeals Division for audit. If TC 420 shows up after TC 977, the amended return has been pulled for a closer review rather than processed at face value.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
The clean sequence is TC 150, then TC 977, then a TC 29X adjustment, then TC 846: original filed, amended posted, liability adjusted, refund out. Anything that breaks that pattern, especially TC 570 or TC 420, means a delay or review.
Reading the Cycle Code Beside TC 977
Next to the code you’ll see an eight-digit cycle code that tells you when the IRS processed the transaction. The first four digits are the year, the next two are the week of the year, and the last two are the day of the week. IRS weekdays are numbered oddly: 01 is Friday, 02 Monday, 03 Tuesday, 04 Wednesday, 05 Thursday.6Internal Revenue Service. IRM 3.30.123 Processing Timeliness: Cycles, Criteria and Processing So 20263102 means the 31st week of 2026, on a Monday. The posting date shown alongside gives you the same information as a calendar date.
TC 977 appears on the tax account transcript and the record of account transcript. It won’t appear on a tax return transcript, which only shows line items from the return as originally filed.7Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
If You Never Filed an Amended Return
If TC 977 shows up and you didn’t file a 1040-X or anything like it, treat that as a possible identity theft signal. Someone may have filed a fraudulent return using your Social Security number.
File Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit, as soon as you can. In Section B, check Box 1, which states you know or suspect someone used your information to file a fraudulent federal return. You can submit it three ways:8Internal Revenue Service. Identity Theft Affidavit (Form 14039)
- Online at irs.gov/dmaf/form/f14039. Attachments cannot be uploaded through this method.
- By fax, using the fax number on any IRS notice you received. With no notice, fax toll-free to 855-807-5720 with a cover sheet marked “Confidential.”
- By mail to the address on any related IRS notice, along with a copy of that notice.
Don’t send your actual tax return to the Form 14039 address. Your own return still goes to the normal filing address for your location.8Internal Revenue Service. Identity Theft Affidavit (Form 14039)
Once things are resolved, the IRS recommends opting into the Identity Protection PIN program at irs.gov/pin. An IP PIN is a six-digit number tied to your account that blocks anyone else from filing under your Social Security number.8Internal Revenue Service. Identity Theft Affidavit (Form 14039)
Notices You May See Alongside It
When TC 977 posts, corresponding notices may arrive in the mail depending on the situation.
- CP 29 or CP 729. Sent when the IRS has your amended return but no original for that tax year. It tells you the amendment can’t be processed without the original.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes
- CP3219A (Statutory Notice of Deficiency). If an IRS-proposed assessment is involved, you have 90 days to resolve the issue with the IRS or file a petition with the U.S. Tax Court. The deadline cannot be extended. Taxpayers outside the United States get 150 days.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP3219A Notice10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6213 – Restrictions Applicable to Deficiencies; Petition to Tax Court
Any notice will carry its own response deadline and instructions. If TC 977 has posted but no mail has arrived, give it a few weeks. If nothing comes and you want confirmation, check your IRS Online Account for digital copies or call the IRS account inquiry line. If a tax professional represents you, they can use the Practitioner Priority Service for faster access.
One boundary worth flagging: TC 977 by itself doesn’t create penalties. But if the amended return follows a late or missing original, failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties under 26 U.S.C. § 6651 may already be accruing on the account and will need to be recalculated once the amended return processes.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax That recalculation is one of the main reasons to file your own return to replace an SFR, even years after the original deadline has passed.
