What Address Do You Send IRS Payments To? 1040-V and 1040-ES

The address to send IRS payments depends on three things: which form the payment goes with, whether you’re mailing a return along with the check, and what state you live in. The IRS runs separate processing centers in Austin, Charlotte, Kansas City, Louisville, and Ogden, and it routes different forms and different states to different centers. Sending a check to the wrong one can delay processing by weeks, and in some situations it can cost you the legal protection of the postmark rule. Always confirm the address in the current year’s form instructions or on irs.gov before you mail, because the IRS reassigns state groupings from year to year and sometimes mid-season.

Mailing a Payment With Your Form 1040

If you’re mailing your annual return with a check or money order, include Form 1040-V, the payment voucher, so the IRS can match your payment to your return. Then use the address for your state:

  • Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1214, Charlotte, NC 28201-1214
  • All other states (including DC): Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 931000, Louisville, KY 40293-1000

Louisville handles the bulk of the country for returns with payment. Only the southern tier ships to Charlotte.1Internal Revenue Service. Mailing an Estimated Tax Payment

Quarterly estimated payments go with Form 1040-ES vouchers, and they use a completely different set of addresses than your annual return. Do not mix them up. The IRS specifically warns against mailing estimated payments to the Form 1040 address.

  • Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1300, Charlotte, NC 28201-1300
  • Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 931100, Louisville, KY 40293-1100

The IRS corrected the 1040-ES addresses partway through the 2026 filing year. If you downloaded or printed the form before February 13, 2026, your copy may show the old address. Estimated payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Miss a deadline and the IRS assesses an underpayment penalty for that quarter, calculated separately, even if you pay in full when you file.

Paying an IRS Notice or a Standalone Balance Due

If you’re paying because of an IRS letter, whether a CP2000, a balance-due bill, or any other assessment, use the address printed on the notice itself. Each notice is worked by a specific compliance unit, and the address routes your payment straight to that unit.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice Sending a notice payment to the regular Form 1040 address is one of the most common routing mistakes and can delay resolution by weeks.

If you’re paying down a balance on your individual account without filing a return, the IRS uses a separate list on its “Where to send your individual tax account balance due payments” page. Most states go to Internal Revenue Service Center, Kansas City, MO 64999-0206.6Internal Revenue Service. Where to Send Your Individual Tax Account Balance Due Payments

Business Payments

Business returns route by form and, for some forms, by principal office location and asset size. For Form 941, the quarterly payroll tax return, all domestic businesses mailing a payment go to the same place: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 932100, Louisville, KY 40293-2100. Businesses that file 10 or more returns during a calendar year are generally required to e-file employment tax forms.7Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Your Taxes for Form 941

Corporate returns (Form 1120) and partnership returns (Form 1065) route based on principal office location, total assets, and whether Schedule M-3 is filed. A partnership with an eastern principal office and under $10 million in assets mails Form 1065 to Kansas City, MO 64999-0011; partnerships with $10 million or more in assets, or those filing Schedule M-3, mail to Ogden, UT 84201-0011 regardless of location.8IRS. 2025 Instructions for Form 1065 Check the current instructions for the exact breakdown; thresholds and groupings differ between 1120 and 1065.

If You Live Abroad

Filers in a foreign country, a U.S. territory, or at an APO or FPO military address use a single payment address regardless of where they’re located: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 1303, Charlotte, NC 28201-1303, USA. This applies to filers claiming the foreign earned income exclusion on Form 2555, filers of Form 4563, and dual-status aliens.9Internal Revenue Service. International – Where to File Form 1040 Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals Residents of American Samoa, Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands should consult IRS Publication 570 for territory-specific instructions.

How to Write the Check

The right address only helps if the payment itself is prepared correctly. The IRS is specific:

  • Make it payable to “U.S. Treasury,” not “IRS” or “Internal Revenue Service.”
  • On the memo line, write your name, address, daytime phone, the tax year, the related form number (like “1040” or “941”), and your Social Security number or EIN.
  • Write the amount in numerals ($1,250.00), not words.
  • Do not send cash. Do not staple or paper-clip the check to your return or voucher.10Internal Revenue Service. Pay by Check or Money Order

A bounced check carries its own penalty. For payments under $1,250, it’s the lesser of the payment amount or $25. For payments of $1,250 or more, it’s 2% of the payment, so a $5,000 bounced check adds $100 on top of the tax bill.11Internal Revenue Service. Dishonored Check or Other Form of Payment Penalty

Proof of Mailing and the Postmark Rule

Federal law treats a postmark as the date of receipt, but only if the envelope is properly addressed and carries sufficient postage. This is the “timely mailing as timely filing” rule under 26 U.S.C. ยง 7502.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying Mail on April 15, arrive April 22, still on time, as long as the postmark reads April 15.

Certified Mail is the strongest proof, because the date on the sender’s receipt is treated as the postmark. Registered mail works the same way. For regular first-class, you’re relying on a legible postal cancellation, and if the stamp isn’t readable the burden is on you to prove when you mailed it.13eCFR. 26 CFR 301.7502-1 – Timely Mailing of Documents and Payments Treated as Timely Filing and Paying

In 2026, Certified Mail runs $5.30 per item on top of regular postage, with a return receipt at $4.40 for the paper card or $2.82 for electronic confirmation. Roughly $10 to $11 all in. Cheap insurance against a failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month on whatever you owe.14Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty

One caution: the postmark rule requires that the envelope be “properly addressed,” meaning sent to the address listed in the form’s instructions. Send your return to an IRS office not designated for that form and the postmark stops protecting you. The payment is treated as received on the date it actually reaches the correct location.15Internal Revenue Service. 20.1.2 Failure to File/Failure to Pay Penalties You can request penalty abatement for reasonable cause, but “I sent it to the wrong address” is a hard argument when the correct address is printed in every set of instructions.

Using FedEx, UPS, or DHL

Only certain private courier services qualify for the postmark rule. Approved tiers include specific FedEx services (First Overnight, Priority Overnight, Standard Overnight, 2 Day, and several international variants), specific UPS services (Next Day Air Early A.M., Next Day Air, Next Day Air Saver, 2nd Day Air, 2nd Day Air A.M., and Worldwide Express variants), and DHL Express services (9:00, 10:30, 12:00, Worldwide, Envelope, and Import Express variants). FedEx Ground and UPS Ground are not on the list. If you use a service that isn’t approved, the delivery date counts, not the ship date.16Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS)

There’s a catch. Private carriers can’t deliver to a P.O. Box, and almost every IRS payment address is a P.O. Box. For private delivery, use the processing center street address that matches the P.O. Box in your form’s instructions:

Faster Options Than Mailing a Check

Mailing a check is the slowest way to pay the IRS. Electronic options confirm receipt instantly and, in most cases, cost nothing.

Debit and credit card payments go through IRS-approved processors. Debit runs about $2.10 to $2.15 per transaction.
