VITA free tax preparation is an IRS-sponsored program that pairs you with a certified volunteer who prepares and electronically files your federal and state return at no cost. You qualify if you earn roughly $69,000 or less, have a disability, or speak limited English. Meeting any one of the three is enough. Most sites run from late January through the April filing deadline, and the 2026 season opens January 26.
Who Qualifies
Three groups can use VITA: taxpayers with gross income of about $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers The income figure is a guideline, and the partner organizations that run individual sites may apply it slightly differently.
There is no age or citizenship requirement. You can use VITA if you file with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) rather than a Social Security number. Many military installations host sites for active-duty members and their families.
If you are 60 or older, the companion Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program is often a better fit because volunteers get extra training on pensions and Social Security taxation. AARP Tax-Aide runs the largest network of TCE sites, and you do not need to be an AARP member to use them.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers
What VITA Will and Won’t Prepare
Volunteers are trained to handle common returns: W-2 wages, interest and dividends, certain retirement distributions, and limited self-employment income. They are also certified to claim credits that people frequently miss on their own, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and education credits.
Self-employment income on Schedule C is only in scope when total business expenses stay at or below $50,000, the business shows no net loss, and there are no employees.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 4012-A VITA/TCE Volunteer Resource Guide Cross any of those lines and the whole return is out of scope. The program also does not prepare returns with rental income on Schedule E, complex capital gains and losses, foreign income or tax credits, or non-deductible IRA contributions that require Form 8606.
If your return falls outside the program, the site will tell you at intake. Volunteers cannot prepare a partial return, so you will need to look at the alternatives further down.
Finding a Site and Booking an Appointment
The IRS VITA/TCE Locator Tool at freetaxassistance.for.irs.gov is the fastest way to find help nearby.3Tax Assistance from the IRS. Site Locator Enter your ZIP code and a distance radius to see addresses, hours, and available services, and filter for virtual preparation if you want remote service. You can also call 800-906-9887. For AARP Tax-Aide specifically, use the AARP Site Locator or call 888-227-7669 between January and April.1Internal Revenue Service. Free Tax Return Preparation for Qualifying Taxpayers
How you book depends on the location. Some sites schedule appointments, some accept walk-ins, and some use a drop-off model where you leave your documents and come back to review and sign. Virtual preparation, where you upload documents and a volunteer prepares the return remotely, is increasingly common. Bilingual and sign language assistance is often noted directly on the locator; ask for any accommodation you need when you schedule.
What to Bring
Missing a single document can mean a wasted trip. Pull everything together before you go:
- A valid government-issued photo ID for every adult on the return.
- Social Security cards or ITIN letters for you, your spouse, and every dependent.4Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation
- All W-2s and 1099s covering wages, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, and any other income.
- Form 1095-A if you had Marketplace health coverage.4Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation
- Records for deductions and credits you plan to claim, including childcare costs with the provider’s tax ID and education expenses.
- A voided check or bank statement showing routing and account numbers for direct deposit.
- Last year’s tax return, or at minimum your prior-year adjusted gross income, which is needed to validate your e-filed return. First-time filers enter zero.5Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return
- Your Identity Protection PIN if the IRS has issued you one. Without it, your e-filed return will be rejected.6Internal Revenue Service. FAQs About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)
One point catches people off guard: if you are filing a joint return electronically, both spouses must be present at the appointment to sign the e-filing authorization.4Internal Revenue Service. Checklist for Free Tax Return Preparation
What Happens at the Appointment
Every visit starts with an intake and interview sheet that captures your personal information, income, and potential deductions.7Internal Revenue Service. IRS Courseware – Intake and Interview Process – Form 13614-C A volunteer walks through it with you, confirms your return is in scope, and prepares your federal and state returns in IRS-provided software.
A second volunteer, one who did not work on your return, then performs an independent quality review before anything gets filed.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 5166 VITA/TCE Volunteer Quality Site Requirements You review the finished return yourself, sign the e-filing authorization, and the volunteer transmits it to the IRS and your state. You leave with a confirmation.
Because the return is e-filed, refund timing matches any other electronic return. The IRS issues most refunds in fewer than 21 days when you e-file with direct deposit, though returns flagged for additional review take longer.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Opens 2026 Filing Season Check status through the IRS “Where’s My Refund?” tool or the IRS2Go app, usually within 24 hours of filing.
If you later find an error, VITA can prepare an amended return even if a volunteer did not do the original.
If Your Return Falls Outside VITA
You still have free and low-cost options. IRS Free File lets taxpayers with adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less use brand-name tax software at no charge, and it handles situations VITA cannot, including rental income, capital gains, and larger self-employment returns.10Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Tax Filing Season Opens With Several Free Filing Options Available You prepare the return yourself, but guided interviews make it workable for most filers.
For genuinely complex returns, a paid preparer is often the practical choice. A basic federal and state return typically runs $100 to $300, more if you have business income, rental property, or multiple state filings. Confirm that anyone you pay has a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number, which the IRS requires of paid preparers.
