Uber’s Employer Identification Number is not a single number that applies to every driver. Uber Technologies pays drivers through subsidiaries, most commonly Rasier LLC for rideshare trips and Portier LLC for Uber Eats deliveries, and each subsidiary has its own EIN. The number you need is already printed on the 1099 tax form Uber sends you each January, in the field labeled “PAYER’S TIN” near the top of the form. You don’t need to look it up separately or type it in anywhere else on your return.
Where the EIN Appears on Your 1099
Every 1099 has a payer identification block in the upper-left area. Uber’s EIN sits in the “PAYER’S TIN” line as a nine-digit number formatted XX-XXXXXXX.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-NEC – Nonemployee Compensation Drivers sometimes look for it in Box 1, but Box 1 of a 1099-NEC shows your nonemployee compensation in dollars, not an identification number. The EIN is above the numbered boxes, alongside Uber’s payer name and address.
If your paper form hasn’t arrived, you can pull a digital copy through the Uber driver portal. Uber makes annual tax documents available by January 31.2Uber. Tax Season Guide for Uber Drivers and Couriers The EIN on the digital form is the same one Uber reported to the IRS. Copying a number from a general web search instead is risky, because you may end up with an EIN for a different Uber entity than the one that paid you, and the IRS matches income by EIN.
Why There Isn’t Just One Uber EIN
Uber Technologies, Inc. is the parent company, but it doesn’t directly pay most drivers. Rasier LLC typically issues payments for rideshare, and Portier LLC handles Uber Eats. Each has its own EIN. So the payer name and EIN on a 1099-K for your ride earnings may not match the payer name and EIN on a 1099-NEC for referral bonuses or promotions.
Two forms can arrive in the same year, reporting different income streams:
- Form 1099-K reports your gross ride and delivery earnings. Uber issues this form when the qualifying thresholds are met.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K
- Form 1099-NEC reports promotions, referral bonuses, and other miscellaneous payments totaling $600 or more.2Uber. Tax Season Guide for Uber Drivers and Couriers
Check both forms if you receive both. The EIN on each is the one you’d reference for that specific income stream. Neither substitutes for the other.
Why the Correct EIN Matters
The IRS matches reported income by EIN. Its automated system checks whether the income a payer reported under its EIN lines up with what you reported on your return.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000 When something doesn’t reconcile, the agency sends a CP2000 notice proposing changes to your tax liability.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice A CP2000 isn’t a bill, but it does require a response and can lead to additional tax owed. The cleanest way to avoid one is to report the income amounts exactly as they appear on the 1099s Uber sent you, tied to the EINs Uber used.
Uber’s EIN vs. Your Own Tax ID
Two identification numbers live on every 1099. Uber’s EIN identifies the company that paid you. Your Taxpayer Identification Number identifies you as the recipient. For most Uber drivers, the TIN is a Social Security Number, since sole proprietors filing a Form 1040 use their SSN as their tax ID by default.
You’d only have your own EIN if you set up a formal business entity for your driving. Forming an LLC or incorporating as an S-Corp means applying for an EIN through the IRS, either online or by filing Form SS-4.6Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number That entity-level EIN then appears on your business tax filings in place of your SSN. Driving under your own name without a registered entity? Your SSN is all you need.
Don’t Copy Uber’s EIN Onto Your Schedule C
A common piece of bad advice online is to write Uber’s EIN onto Line D of your Schedule C. Don’t. The IRS Schedule C instructions reserve Line D for your own EIN and state that you should “not enter another taxpayer’s EIN.”7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) If you’re a sole proprietor using your SSN, leave Line D blank.
What you do carry over from your 1099s is the income. Gross ride and delivery earnings from Form 1099-K, plus promotional or referral income from Form 1099-NEC, go into the gross receipts section of Schedule C.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Uber’s EIN does its work simply by being printed on the 1099 that the IRS already has a copy of. It never gets transcribed onto your return.
What If You Didn’t Get a 1099
If your earnings fell below the reporting thresholds, Uber may not send you a 1099 at all. That does not mean the income is untaxed. The 1099 is an information return the IRS uses for matching. It doesn’t create the tax obligation; your income does. You still report all your Uber earnings on Schedule C, whether or not a form arrived.
In that situation, there’s no Uber EIN for you to reference on your return, and none is required. You report your gross receipts from the tax summary in the Uber driver app and file as usual. If you later realize a 1099 was issued but you never received it, log in to the driver portal and download the digital copy. The EIN and dollar amounts on that form are what the IRS is expecting to see reflected on your return.
