If more Social Security tax was withheld from your paychecks than the annual maximum, you can get the excess back, but the route depends on why it happened. When two or more employers combined pushed your withholding past the cap, you claim the excess Social Security tax withheld as a refund credit on Schedule 3 of your Form 1040. When a single employer kept withholding after your wages crossed the cap, you go to that employer first and use IRS Form 843 only if the employer won’t fix it.
For 2026, the Social Security tax rate is 6.2% and applies only to wages up to $184,500, so no individual worker should pay more than $11,439 in Social Security tax for the year.1Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base Anything above that is recoverable.
How to Confirm You Were Over-Withheld
Gather every Form W-2 you received for the year and look at Box 4, which shows the Social Security tax each employer withheld.2Internal Revenue Service. 2026 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 Add the Box 4 amounts. If the total is more than $11,439 for 2026, you have an overpayment.
Now check how many W-2s produced the excess. One W-2 over the cap points to a payroll error. Two or more W-2s that together push you over point to combined withholding from separate employers who had no way to see each other’s numbers. The recovery process splits at that point, and using the wrong one will delay your refund.
One boundary worth noting: Medicare tax has no wage ceiling, so over-withholding of Medicare by a single employer is not a scenario the cap-based refund process addresses.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 751, Social Security and Medicare Withholding Rates
Multiple Employers: Claim the Credit on Schedule 3
When you worked two or more jobs in the same year and each employer correctly withheld 6.2% on its own payroll, the combined total can exceed the annual cap even though no employer did anything wrong. The IRS treats the excess as a credit on your federal income tax return.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA Tax Withheld
Subtract $11,439 from your total Box 4 withholding. Enter the difference on Line 11 of Schedule 3 (Additional Credits and Payments) and file Schedule 3 with your Form 1040. The credit lands in the payments section of your return and either reduces your balance due or increases your refund.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA Tax Withheld
Tax software usually handles this automatically once you enter all your W-2s. Check the Schedule 3 output anyway, particularly if you changed jobs mid-year or held overlapping positions.
Married Filing Jointly
Spouses cannot combine wages when figuring the credit. Each spouse calculates the overpayment independently against their own W-2s, and the $184,500 cap applies per person.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA Tax Withheld If one spouse crossed the cap across two jobs and the other did not, only the first spouse has an excess to claim.
Single Employer Over-Withheld: Ask the Employer First
If just one W-2 shows Box 4 over $11,439, that employer failed to stop withholding after your wages crossed the cap. Don’t claim this on your Form 1040. The IRS requires you to go back to the employer first.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 608, Excess Social Security and RRTA Tax Withheld
Contact payroll or HR, explain the error, and ask for a direct refund of the overpayment. The employer files Form 941-X to recover the overpaid tax from the IRS on their end and should issue you a corrected Form W-2c reflecting the accurate withholding.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 941-X Keep the W-2c with your tax records in case the IRS later asks about the discrepancy.
If the Employer Won’t Refund the Excess
If the employer refuses or has gone out of business, file Form 843 (Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement) with the IRS directly.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 843 (12/2024) Form 843 is a standalone filing, not an attachment to Form 1040.
Include with the form:
- A written statement from the employer, if you can get one, showing how much they already refunded, how much they have claimed or plan to claim as a credit, and confirmation that the statement supports your refund claim.
- Your own written statement, if the employer refuses to provide one, giving the same information based on your best knowledge and explaining why you could not get the employer’s cooperation.
- A copy of your Form W-2 to document the amount withheld.
Mail Form 843 to the IRS service center where you would normally file your income tax return.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 843 (12/2024) Processing takes longer than a standard return, so send it in as soon as your documentation is ready.
Self-Employed With W-2 Wages Too
Self-employment income is subject to the full 12.4% Social Security rate, but the same $184,500 wage base applies, and W-2 wages count against it first.1Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base Schedule SE reduces the self-employment income subject to Social Security tax by the amount of W-2 wages already taxed.
If you had $150,000 in W-2 wages and $60,000 in net self-employment income in 2026, only $34,500 of the self-employment income ($184,500 minus $150,000) would owe the 12.4% Social Security portion. If your W-2 wages alone exceeded $184,500, none of your self-employment income owes Social Security tax.
Having self-employment income does not change the refund process for W-2 over-withholding. If two or more W-2 employers combined pushed you over the cap, you still claim the excess on Schedule 3 the same way any other multi-employer worker would.4Internal Revenue Service. How Long You Have to Claim It
The standard refund statute of limitations applies: three years from the date you filed your original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. This governs both the Schedule 3 credit and a Form 843 filing.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (12/2025)6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 843 (12/2024)
If you already filed and forgot the credit, fix it with Form 1040-X. Report the change on Line 12 and attach copies of any additional or corrected W-2s you received after filing.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (12/2025) Amended returns can be filed electronically for the three most recent tax years and on paper for older years still within the statute. Miss the window and the refund is gone, so if you suspect an overpayment from a prior year, pull the old W-2s and file before the clock runs out.
