Tax Return Rejected for IP PIN: Retrieve the PIN and Refile

If your tax return was rejected for an IP PIN error, the six-digit Identity Protection PIN on the return didn’t match what the IRS has on file for you or your spouse. The return wasn’t audited or flagged for review; the IRS security system just couldn’t confirm you’re the authorized filer. Retrieve the correct current-year PIN, re-enter it in your tax software, and retransmit. Most people are done in a day.

Why the IRS Rejected It

The IP PIN is a six-digit number the IRS uses to verify that the person filing a return actually controls the Social Security Number on it. Once you have one, the IRS won’t accept your e-filed return without it. A few things commonly go wrong:

Your tax software will show a rejection code. IND-180-01 means the primary taxpayer’s IP PIN didn’t match; IND-182-01 means the spouse’s didn’t.4Internal Revenue Service. IRS Identity Protection PIN Program Either way, the fix is the same: get the right number.

How to Get Your Current-Year IP PIN

There are three ways to retrieve it, and the speed difference is huge. Start at the top.

Log in at IRS.gov and go to the IP PIN section of your profile. If you already have an account, the number is there immediately.5Internal Revenue Service. Phone

Call 800-908-4490, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific). An assistant will verify your identity, but for security they won’t read the PIN over the phone. The IRS mails it to the address on file, which takes roughly 21 days.5Internal Revenue Service. Refile Once You Have the Correct PIN

Open your return in your tax software, enter the six-digit IP PIN in the designated field (usually near your Social Security Number), and retransmit. You can check refund status about 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges the return, and e-filed returns generally process within 21 days.7Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms

If you can’t refile electronically and are waiting on a mailed PIN, you can send a paper return. Print the completed Form 1040 and any schedules, sign and date, and mail to the appropriate IRS service center. A paper return filed without the IP PIN isn’t outright rejected the way an e-file would be; the IRS will hold it while it verifies your identity, which adds significant time on top of already-slower paper processing.9Internal Revenue Service. If the Deadline Is Close

A rejection doesn’t automatically give you more time, but there’s a safety net. When your e-filed return is rejected, a paper return will still count as timely if it’s postmarked by the later of the original filing deadline (including any extension you already have) or 10 calendar days after the IRS notified you of the rejection.8Internal Revenue Service. Age, Name, SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures That 10-day window is your fallback.

If you owe and can’t resolve the PIN quickly, file Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension. The extension covers filing, not payment; any tax owed is still due April 15. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%, and the extension eliminates it while you sort out the PIN.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty

When the Rejection Actually Means Someone Else Filed

Sometimes the return is rejected not because the PIN is wrong but because a return has already been filed under your Social Security Number. If you didn’t file it, that’s identity theft, and the rejection message will typically look different from a straight PIN mismatch.

File a paper return and attach Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) to the back. Mail both to the IRS service center for your state. The IRS will assign the case to its Identity Theft Victim Assistance team, which removes the fraudulent return, processes your legitimate one, releases any refund you’re owed, and puts an identity theft indicator on your account.11Internal Revenue Service. How IRS ID Theft Victim Assistance Works Don’t send duplicate Form 14039s or call to check on it; both actually slow resolution.

What If a Dependent’s IP PIN Is the Problem

If you claim a dependent with an IP PIN, that PIN has to be on your return too. Parents and legal guardians can request one on a dependent’s behalf, but dependents under 18 can’t use the online account method. That leaves the phone line or an in-person visit. For an in-person appointment, bring one government-issued photo ID for yourself plus two forms of identification for the child, such as a birth certificate and Social Security card.12Internal Revenue Service.
