Stipend Tax Form: W-2, 1099-NEC, or No Form at All

The tax form for a stipend depends on why you were paid. If the stipend compensated you for services such as teaching, research, or lab work, it belongs on a W-2 or a 1099-NEC. If it supported your studies with no service required, the taxable portion goes on Schedule 1 of Form 1040, Line 8r, and you may not receive any tax form at all. Getting the classification right decides whether you also owe 15.3% in self-employment tax on top of ordinary income tax.

Which Form You Should Expect

Five outcomes are possible, and which one applies depends entirely on how your payer classified the money.

  • Form W-2. If the stipend is wages for services and you’re treated as an employee, your institution withholds federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare and reports everything on a W-2.
  • Form 1099-NEC. If you performed services but were paid as an independent contractor, the payer reports the amount in Box 1 of Form 1099-NEC. For payments made in 2026, the filing threshold is $2,000, up from the previous $600. Income on this form is treated as self-employment earnings.1Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099
  • Form 1098-T. Schools use this form to report tuition payments and scholarship or grant amounts. Box 5 shows the total scholarships and grants the school administered during the year. Subtract your qualified education expenses from Box 5 to find the taxable portion.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 (2025), Tax Benefits for Education
  • Form 1042-S. Nonresident aliens usually receive this form in place of a 1099 for scholarship or fellowship income. It shows the gross amount and any tax withheld under the rules for foreign persons.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1042-S (2026)
  • No form at all. For non-service fellowships and non-qualified scholarships, the payer often has no obligation to send you any tax document. The IRS does not require institutions to issue a 1099 for taxable scholarship income that isn’t compensation.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 (2025), Tax Benefits for Education

The absence of a form does not make the income tax-free. You are responsible for tracking the amount and reporting it, even if nothing ever arrives in the mail.

Service Stipends vs. Non-Service Grants

The line that decides everything is whether you had to work to get the money. If you had to teach, run experiments, staff a lab, or perform any other service as a condition of the payment, it’s compensation regardless of what the offer letter calls it.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 117 – Qualified Scholarships A teaching assistantship labeled a “fellowship” is still wages if teaching was required to receive the funds.

A true fellowship grant carries no current or future service obligation. Both service and non-service stipends can be taxable, but they’re taxed differently. Service compensation triggers Social Security and Medicare taxes on top of income tax. A taxable non-service grant is subject only to ordinary income tax, with no employment taxes. That gap is where the biggest stipend tax mistakes happen.

Where Each Form Goes on Your Return

W-2 Wages

Service-based stipend income on a W-2 goes on Line 1a of Form 1040, exactly like any other wages. Taxes have already been withheld.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 (2025), Tax Benefits for Education

1099-NEC Income

Box 1 of a 1099-NEC is self-employment income. Report it on Schedule C, carry the net profit to your Form 1040, and file Schedule SE to figure Social Security and Medicare. The combined self-employment tax rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security on net earnings up to $184,500 in 2026, plus 2.9% for Medicare on all net earnings.5Internal Revenue Service. Self-employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)6Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base If a 1099-NEC arrived for what was really a non-service fellowship, do not put it on Schedule C. See the correction steps below.

Non-Service Grants and Scholarships

Taxable non-service stipends, including the portion of a fellowship that exceeds your qualified education expenses, go on Schedule 1, Line 8r, labeled “Scholarship and fellowship grants not reported on Form W-2.”7Internal Revenue Service. Schedule 1 (Form 1040) – Additional Income and Adjustments to Income The total from Schedule 1 flows into your Form 1040 as part of adjusted gross income. The income is taxed at your ordinary rate and is not subject to self-employment tax.

If a payer issued a 1099-MISC with the amount in Box 3 (“Other income”), that income is generally not self-employment income either, and should follow this same path through Schedule 1.

Nonresident Aliens

If you’re on a student or scholar visa, file Form 1040-NR instead of Form 1040 and report taxable scholarship or fellowship income on Schedule 1, Line 8r.2Internal Revenue Service. When a Stipend Is Not Taxable

The IRS treats all income as taxable unless a specific law says otherwise.10Internal Revenue Service. Taxable Income For stipends, the exclusion comes from Internal Revenue Code Section 117, which covers “qualified scholarships.” Two conditions must both be met: you are a degree candidate at an eligible educational institution, and you spend the money on qualified education expenses.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 117 – Qualified Scholarships

Qualified education expenses cover tuition, required enrollment fees, and course-related books, supplies, and equipment that all students in your program must have.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 (2025), Tax Benefits for Education Anything else is taxable. Room and board, travel, personal living costs, and general cash allowances fall outside the exclusion, even if your school folds them into a “scholarship package.” The portion of any stipend covering those costs counts as gross income.

If You Got the Wrong Form

Misclassification is common with stipends, and two situations come up most often.

You received a 1099-NEC for a non-service fellowship. If you weren’t performing services for the payer, the income isn’t self-employment income no matter what the form says. Ask the institution for a corrected form. If nothing changes, report the income on Schedule 1, Line 8r, not on Schedule C, and keep documentation showing there was no service requirement. That prevents 15.3% of self-employment tax on income that doesn’t warrant it.

You performed services but received a 1099-NEC instead of a W-2. If you worked set hours, used the institution’s equipment, and followed its direction on how the work was done, the payer may have misclassified you as an independent contractor. File Form 8919 to pay only the employee’s share of Social Security and Medicare (7.65%) rather than the full 15.3%. You’ll need a reason code; if you haven’t yet asked the IRS for a determination, use code G and file Form SS-8 with your return.11Internal Revenue Service. Paying Tax on a Stipend With No Withholding

The practical headache with most non-W-2 stipends is that nothing is withheld. The full payment arrives, and the tax bill waits until you file. For a graduate student getting a first significant payment outside a regular job, that bill can be a shock.

You generally must make quarterly estimated tax payments using Form 1040-ES if you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax after subtracting withholding and refundable credits.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-ES – Estimated Tax for Individuals A stipend of $15,000 to $20,000 clears that threshold easily when nothing is being withheld.

The 2026 quarterly due dates:

  • April 15, for income earned January through March
  • June 15, for income earned April through May
  • September 15, for income earned June through August
  • January 15, 2027, for income earned September through December

If a due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.13Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax

To avoid an underpayment penalty, your total payments must meet one of two safe harbors: at least 90% of the tax shown on your current-year return, or at least 100% of the tax on your prior-year return. If your prior-year adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, the prior-year safe harbor rises to 110%.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-ES – Estimated Tax for Individuals Students entering a new program often had little or no income the previous year, which makes the prior-year safe harbor easy to satisfy. If you owed zero tax last year, you can technically make no estimated payments and still avoid the penalty, but you’ll owe the full amount at filing.

If you or a spouse also hold a W-2 job, you can raise withholding there using Form W-4 to cover the tax on your stipend. Many recipients find that simpler than mailing four estimated payments.
