M&T Bank Tax Documents: Forms, Delivery, and Corrections

You can get your M&T Bank tax documents by logging in to online banking at mtb.com and opening the Tax Documents section, where forms are posted as PDFs you can view, download, or print. If you’re enrolled in electronic delivery, they typically appear a few days before paper copies would arrive in the mail, which gives you a head start on filing before April 15.

Downloading Your Forms From Online Banking

The portal is the fastest route, and it works the same way for personal and business customers.

  • Sign in at mtb.com with your User ID and password. Use a private network rather than public Wi-Fi.
  • From the dashboard, open the menu labeled “Documents” or “Statements and Documents,” then select “Tax Documents” or “Tax Forms.”
  • Choose the tax year. Available forms are listed by year.
  • Click the form to open the PDF. Save a copy for your records or send it to your preparer.

M&T keeps electronic statements and documents available for up to seven years, so prior-year forms are there without a call to customer service.1M&T Bank. Electronic Statements and Notices If you haven’t opted in to electronic delivery, log in, go to “Statement Delivery Settings,” and accept the Digital Service Agreement. Paper mailings stop once you enroll, and you can switch back later.

Which Forms M&T Sends and When

What you receive depends on the accounts you hold and what those accounts did during the year.

  • Form 1099-INT reports taxable interest of $10 or more on checking, savings, and CDs.2Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-INT, Interest Income
  • Form 1098 shows mortgage interest when you paid at least $600, and can include mortgage insurance premiums and property taxes paid from escrow.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098 – Mortgage Interest Statement
  • Consolidated Form 1099 combines investment forms such as 1099-B (brokerage proceeds) and 1099-DIV (dividends).
  • Form 1099-R reports retirement distributions of $10 or more from IRAs, pensions, and annuities.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-R
  • Form 1099-Q reports distributions from Coverdell ESAs or 529 plans.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-Q
  • Form 5498 reflects IRA contributions and rollovers. It’s informational; your copy confirms amounts.6Internal Revenue Service. About Form 5498, IRA Contribution Information

Deadlines are staggered. Most common forms, including 1099-INT, 1099-R, 1099-DIV, and 1098, must be posted or mailed by January 31. The Consolidated 1099 has a later February 15 deadline because brokerage transactions need extra processing. Form 1042-S follows a March 15 deadline, and Form 5498 doesn’t appear until May 31 because you have until the April filing deadline to make prior-year IRA contributions.8Internal Revenue Service. 2025 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns Since Form 5498 arrives after most filers are done, there’s no reason to wait for it. You already know what you contributed.

One thing to remember: even if your interest was under $10 and you never receive a 1099-INT, the IRS still expects you to report it.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic no. 403, Interest Received Your December account statement will show the full year’s interest.

Paper or Electronic

Electronic delivery gets you the forms sooner and keeps sensitive information off your doorstep. If you’d rather have paper again, send a secure message through online banking or call M&T at 1-800-724-2440 to withdraw electronic consent.10M&T Bank. M&T Bank Phone Numbers By Department Switching creates a brief lag while the bank updates your preference, so don’t flip your setting right before tax season.

Missing or Incorrect Forms

Before assuming a form is late, check whether you actually hit the reporting threshold. Interest under $10 won’t produce a 1099-INT, and mortgage interest under $600 won’t produce a 1098.11Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098, Mortgage Interest Statement

If a form is genuinely missing by mid-February, or the amounts don’t match your statements, reach M&T through the secure message center in online banking or by phone at 1-800-724-2440. Have your statements ready so you can point to the specific numbers in question. A confirmed error prompts a “Corrected” form, and the reissue can take several weeks.

Don’t file with numbers you know are wrong. If a corrected form is still outstanding as April 15 approaches, submit Form 4868 for an automatic six-month extension to October 15.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 The extension covers filing, not payment. Anything you owe is still due April 15, and interest starts accruing then.13Internal Revenue Service. When to File

Closed Accounts, Business Accounts, and Trusts

Closing an account doesn’t cancel the bank’s reporting obligation. If your account earned reportable interest or paid a distribution before it closed, M&T still issues the 1099 and mails it to the last address on file. If you’ve moved, update your address with the Telephone Banking Center at 1-800-724-2440 or at a branch before January mailings go out.14M&T Bank. General Banking FAQs

How Long to Keep Them

The IRS generally has three years from your filing date to audit. Underreporting income by more than 25% extends that to six years, and if you never filed, there’s no cutoff at all.16Internal Revenue Service. Topic no. 305, Recordkeeping The seven-year window in M&T’s portal covers both the standard and extended audit periods, but pulling a copy to your own storage protects you against a future account closure or system change that could cut off access.
