Venmo will send you a 1099-K only when your goods-and-services payments cross both federal thresholds in the same calendar year: more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions. Congress restored that original threshold permanently through the One, Big, Beautiful Bill signed into law in 2025, after several years of proposed lower limits that never took effect.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill; Dollar Limit Reverts to $20,000 If you fall short of either number, no form. If you clear both, expect one. Either way, any business income you receive through Venmo is taxable and belongs on your return.
The Federal Threshold: Both Conditions Must Be Met
The $20,000 and 200-transaction rule is an “and,” not an “or.” Receiving $25,000 through 150 transactions does not trigger a 1099-K because the transaction count falls short. Running 300 transactions that total $15,000 does not trigger one either, because the dollar figure does.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6050W – Returns Relating to Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions
Only payments tagged as goods and services count toward the threshold. Personal transfers, the kind you use to split dinner or reimburse a roommate, are supposed to sit outside the count. That is why the label on each payment matters. If a friend accidentally marks a personal payment as a business one, it pushes your reported total up. If a client pays you as “personal” to skip the label, Venmo may not report it, but you still owe tax on the income.
One boundary worth knowing: the threshold applies to third-party settlement organizations like Venmo, PayPal, and Cash App. If you accept a credit or debit card directly through a card processor, every dollar is reportable regardless of totals.3Internal Revenue Service. State Thresholds Can Pull You In Sooner
Several states set their own 1099-K thresholds well below the federal level, some as low as $600 with no minimum transaction count. If your state is one of them, you can receive a 1099-K from Venmo even when your activity is nowhere near $20,000. Your state department of revenue publishes the figure that applies to you.
When the Form Arrives and What It Shows
Venmo must issue your 1099-K by January 31 of the year after the tax year in question, and a copy goes to the IRS at the same time.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K You can also download it inside the Venmo app.
The number on the form is gross payments. It does not subtract Venmo fees, refunds, or your business expenses, so it will almost always be higher than your actual profit. You reconcile the difference on your return.
What Counts as Taxable Venmo Income
Any payment you receive through Venmo for goods or services is taxable: freelance work, product sales, rent collected, side jobs. The IRS does not treat payment-app income differently from any other kind.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K
Personal payments are not income. Splitting a check, a birthday gift from a relative, or a roommate’s share of the utility bill sits outside the tax system entirely.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K
Selling personal items is a mixed picture. Sell a used couch for less than you paid, and there is no taxable gain. Sell a collectible for more than you paid, and the profit is a capital gain that goes on Form 8949 and Schedule D rather than Schedule C.4Internal Revenue Service. You Owe Tax Even Without a 1099-K
Missing the threshold does not remove your tax obligation. Business income from Venmo is reportable whether it is $500 or $50,000. The 1099-K threshold decides when Venmo reports; it does not decide when you do.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K FAQs: General Information
Self-employed filers report gross receipts and business expenses on Schedule C, arriving at net profit after subtracting ordinary costs like supplies, software, advertising, and mileage.6Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship)
If net profit is $400 or more, self-employment tax applies on top of income tax. The rate is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare), calculated on 92.35% of net earnings and figured on Schedule SE. Half of the resulting tax is deductible as an income adjustment on Schedule 1.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
Quarterly Estimated Payments
Venmo income arrives with no withholding. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more at filing, the IRS wants payments spread across the year in four installments due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year.8Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes9Internal Revenue Service. When Are Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments Due?
You can generally avoid an underpayment penalty by paying at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of last year’s, whichever is less. That safe harbor rises to 110% of prior-year tax if your prior-year adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000.10Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty
Fixing a 1099-K That’s Wrong
A mislabeled personal payment, a duplicate, or a refund not backed out can push your 1099-K above what you actually earned. Start by contacting Venmo directly. Their name and phone number appear in the upper left corner of the form, and you can request a corrected version.11Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information
If a corrected form does not arrive before your filing deadline, you can zero out the error on Schedule 1. Report the erroneous amount on Line 8z as “Other Income — Form 1099-K Received in Error,” then enter the same figure as an offsetting adjustment on Line 24z. Your adjusted gross income is unchanged.11Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information
The same Schedule 1 approach handles personal items sold at a loss: proceeds on Line 8z, offset on Line 24z. A personal item sold at a profit goes to Form 8949 and Schedule D instead.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K FAQs: Common Situations Save every message with Venmo about the dispute. Give Venmo Your Taxpayer Information or Face 24% Withholding
Before Venmo can issue a 1099-K, it needs your taxpayer identification number, usually a Social Security number for individuals or an EIN for a business entity.13Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN) Venmo collects it through an in-app prompt that works like a digital Form W-9.14Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
Ignore the prompt or give bad information, and Venmo has to withhold 24% of your incoming goods-and-services payments and send it to the IRS. This is backup withholding, and it reduces every payment before it hits your balance.15Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding
The withheld money is not lost. It appears in Box 4 of your 1099-K and you claim it as a credit on your return, so an overpayment comes back to you. You do lose access to the cash until then. Verifying your taxpayer information in Venmo’s settings when you first start receiving business payments is the simplest fix.16Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 307, Backup Withholding
Penalties for Leaving Venmo Income Off Your Return
The IRS matches 1099-K data against filed returns. When the numbers do not line up, the system generates a notice.
The common outcome is the accuracy-related penalty, 20% of the underpaid tax when the understatement is significant, which for individuals generally means more than the greater of $5,000 or 10% of the tax that should have been on the return.17Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments A failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month can stack on top, capped at 25%,18Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty with daily compounded interest on the balance. Where the IRS finds intentional concealment, the civil fraud penalty is 75% of the underpaid tax.19Internal Revenue Service. Reporting the income, whether or not a 1099-K shows up, is what keeps you out of all of this.
