To get IRS tax return transcripts, sign in to your IRS online account and download the transcript you need in a few minutes, request one by calling 800-908-9946, or mail Form 4506-T. All transcripts are free. If you need a full copy of your original return with every attachment, that’s a separate request on Form 4506 and costs $30 per return. For most purposes, including mortgage underwriting and financial aid, a transcript is what the requester actually wants.
Pick the Right Transcript First
The IRS offers five free transcript types, and asking for the wrong one is the most common reason people end up requesting twice. Match the transcript to the reason you need it before you log in.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
- A tax return transcript shows most line items from your original Form 1040 as filed, with its forms and schedules. It doesn’t reflect changes made after filing. Mortgage lenders usually ask for this one. Available online for the current year and three prior years.
- A tax account transcript shows basic data like filing status, taxable income, and payments, plus any changes the IRS made after you filed. Available online for the current year and nine prior years.
- A record of account transcript combines the return transcript and the account transcript into one document. Available online for the current year and three prior years.
- A wage and income transcript shows data from information returns filed about you, including W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s. The online version is capped at roughly 85 documents; if you have more, request it by mail on Form 4506-T. Available online for the current year and nine prior years.
- A verification of non-filing letter confirms the IRS has no processed return on file for a given year. Financial aid offices ask for this when a student or parent didn’t file. Available online after June 15 for the current tax year, or anytime for the prior three years.

How far back you can go depends on the transcript type. Return transcripts and records of account cover the current year plus three prior; account transcripts and wage and income transcripts go back nine years. For anything older, you have to request by mail.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
Get It by Phone
Call the IRS automated transcript line at 800-908-9946. The system asks for your Social Security Number and the numbers in your street address to verify you, and it can send either a tax return transcript or a tax account transcript to the address the IRS already has on file. Delivery takes 5 to 10 calendar days.3Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
This route skips the photo-ID upload but limits you to two transcript types and one delivery address.
Get It by Mail with Form 4506-T
Form 4506-T is the request-by-mail option, and it’s also the fallback when the electronic channels won’t verify you or when you need records older than the online tool allows. Fill out the form, include a phone number and the address where the transcript should go, sign and date it, and mail or fax it to the IRS processing center for your state. The IRS publishes the addresses and fax numbers by state.5Internal Revenue Service. When You Actually Need a Full Copy of the Return
A transcript summarizes; a full copy is the return itself, with every attachment exactly as filed. Court proceedings and audits where the exact content of an attachment matters are the usual reasons to request one. Use Form 4506, not Form 4506-T, and pay $30 per return by check or money order to “United States Treasury.” Write your SSN and “Form 4506 request” on the payment.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return
You must specify the exact form number (Form 1040, Form 1120, and so on), and each form number takes its own Form 4506. Processing runs up to 75 calendar days because the IRS pulls these from storage manually.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return Build that timeline in from the start if a closing or litigation deadline is driving the request.
Situations That Complicate the Request
You’ve Moved Since You Last Filed
Phone and mail requests use the address the IRS has on file. If you moved and didn’t tell the IRS, the phone system will reject your request, and a mailed transcript won’t be forwarded. File Form 8822, Change of Address, to update it, but expect four to six weeks of processing. If you need a transcript now and can’t wait, use the online tool, which displays the document on screen and sidesteps the mailing address problem. If you’re getting a data-mismatch error online, try the exact address from your most recently filed return rather than your current one. If nothing works, submit Form 4506-T by mail.8Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs
Your Mortgage Lender Is Asking
Lenders have their own channel called the Income Verification Express Service. If your lender hands you Form 4506-C, sign it and give it back; they’ll submit it to the IRS as an IVES participant, and the transcript goes directly to them. The form must reach the IRS within 120 days of your signature. You don’t need to pull a transcript separately unless the lender asks. Federal law limits how the lender can use and share the data, with penalties for unauthorized disclosure.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506-C, IVES Request for Transcript of Tax Return
You Want Someone Else to Pull Your Records
The IRS won’t release your records to a tax professional or other third party without written authorization. Two forms cover this. Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, lets an eligible representative such as a CPA, enrolled agent, or attorney receive your confidential tax information and also act on your behalf in disputes and audits.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization, is narrower: it lets a designated individual or organization inspect or receive your tax information but doesn’t grant representation rights.11Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8821, Tax Information Authorization If you just want your accountant to pull transcripts at tax time, Form 8821 is enough.
You’re Requesting for Someone Who Has Died
Submit your request with a copy of the death certificate and either Letters Testamentary (also called Letters of Administration or Letters of Representation) from the probate court, or a completed Form 56, Notice Concerning Fiduciary Relationship, with any supporting court documents.12Internal Revenue Service. Request Deceased Person’s Information Without court-issued letters showing you’re the executor or administrator, the IRS won’t release the records regardless of your relationship to the deceased.
Someone Filed a Fraudulent Return in Your Name
To get a copy of the fraudulent return itself, use your IRS online account or submit Form 4506-F, Identity Theft Victim’s Request for Copy of Fraudulent Tax Return. Your name and SSN must appear as the primary or secondary taxpayer on the fraudulent return; being listed only as a dependent doesn’t qualify. The IRS acknowledges these requests within 30 days, but average processing time as of early 2026 is 623 days.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Requesting Copy of Fraudulent Returns Separately, Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit, is what you file to alert the IRS to the theft in the first place; it can be submitted online, by mail, or by fax.14Internal Revenue Service.
