IRS reject code IND-452 means the IRS has already accepted a federal return under your Social Security number or ITIN for that tax year. Retransmitting won’t clear it, and changing your AGI won’t clear it either. Someone — you, a family member, or an unauthorized filer — got there first. To fix it, you need to figure out who, and in almost every case paper-file your own return.
What IND-452 Actually Tells You
When your software transmits, the IRS checks whether it already holds an accepted return for that SSN and tax year. If it does, the second submission bounces back with IND-452. The rejection isn’t questioning your identity or your data. It’s telling you the slot is taken.
That distinction matters because a lot of people react by re-entering their prior-year AGI or resubmitting. Neither works. The IRS system will keep rejecting electronic submissions for your SSN as long as an accepted return sits there.
Rule Out the Innocent Explanations First
Duplicate filings from someone in your own household are far more common than fraud. Start there.
- Ask your spouse whether they already filed a joint return covering both of you.
- Ask your parents whether they claimed you as a dependent, if that’s plausible for your situation.
- Check with any tax preparer you’ve worked with in case they transmitted the return before you did on your own.
- If you used more than one tax software product this season, log into each one and see whether a return was actually transmitted.
- Read the Social Security number on your return digit by digit. A single transposed number can match someone else’s identifier.
If you find the answer here — your spouse already filed jointly, for example — coordinate with them. You may need to amend that return rather than file a separate one of your own.
Print, Sign, and Mail Your Return
If your SSN is right and no one you know filed on your behalf, e-filing is off the table for this tax year. Print your entire return, sign and date it, and mail it to the IRS service center that matches your state of residence and whether you’re enclosing a payment. The IRS publishes the addresses in state-by-state lookup tables.1Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Taxpayers and Tax Professionals Filing Form 1040 If you’re sending a check with Form 1040-V, use regular mail; private delivery services can slow payment processing.
A paper return doesn’t need prior-year AGI verification. Your physical signature does that job.
When to Treat It as Identity Theft
If you’ve worked through every innocent explanation and nothing fits, someone else likely filed under your SSN. That’s tax-related identity theft, and the response is specific.
File Form 14039, Identity Theft Affidavit. You can complete it online at irs.gov or submit the paper version by mail or fax.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File an Identity Theft Affidavit You can also report the theft at IdentityTheft.gov, run by the Federal Trade Commission, which can transmit your Form 14039 to the IRS electronically for you.
You still need to paper-file your own legitimate return alongside the identity theft report. The IRS will investigate the fraudulent filing separately, and that process typically takes several months. Watch your IRS account and your credit reports closely while it runs.
Get an IP PIN So This Doesn’t Happen Again
An Identity Protection PIN is a six-digit number the IRS issues to you that blocks anyone else from e-filing under your SSN. When you have one, your tax software asks for the IP PIN instead of your prior-year AGI, which removes both the fraud risk and the AGI-matching problem that rejects so many other returns.3Internal Revenue Service. Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return
Any taxpayer can request one. Three routes are available:4Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN
- Through your IRS online account. This is the fastest option. You verify your identity through ID.me if you don’t already have an account, then find the IP PIN on your profile page.
- By Form 15227, if you can’t create an online account and your AGI on your last filed return was below $84,000 (or $168,000 for married filing jointly). The IRS calls you to verify your identity and mails the PIN within four to six weeks.
- In person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center by appointment. Bring a government-issued photo ID plus one additional form of identification. The PIN arrives by mail in about three weeks.
Even if this year’s IND-452 turned out to be your spouse filing early, requesting an IP PIN is worth the few minutes. It’s the most reliable way to keep the slot under your SSN reserved for you next year.
If You’re Close to the April 15 Deadline
A late-season rejection changes the math. The IRS usually gives a five-calendar-day grace period after the deadline to fix and retransmit a rejected e-file, but that grace period doesn’t help with IND-452, because the problem isn’t a data error you can correct on screen. You need a paper return in the mail.
Paper returns count as timely filed if they’re postmarked by the due date. If you’ve already missed it, file as fast as possible to cap your penalty exposure. The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month, up to 25%. A separate failure-to-pay penalty adds 0.5% per month on any unpaid balance, also capped at 25%. If your return is more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty applies — the lesser of $525 (for returns due in 2026) or 100% of the tax owed.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges Interest runs daily on any unpaid balance from the original due date.
If you’re owed a refund, none of these penalties apply. File anyway, because the clock on your refund doesn’t start until the IRS has your return.
One Thing IND-452 Is Not
If your rejection message specifically says your prior-year AGI didn’t match IRS records, that’s a different reject code, not IND-452. The fix there is entering the correct AGI from Line 11 of your most recent Form 1040 and resubmitting. IND-452 is not an AGI problem, and no amount of correcting your AGI will resolve it.
