IRS Payoff Request: Three Ways to Get Your Payoff Amount

An IRS payoff request is how you ask the IRS for the exact dollar amount that will zero out your tax account on a specific future date, including tax, interest, and penalties calculated through that date. You can make the request three ways: through your IRS Online Account, by calling the IRS, or by sending a written letter. Getting a date-specific figure matters because interest on unpaid federal tax compounds daily,1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6622 – Interest Compounded Daily so a balance from last week already understates what you owe, and paying even a dollar short leaves a residual balance that keeps growing.

Three Ways to Request Your Payoff Amount

Which method fits depends on how quickly you plan to pay and whether you need a formal document for a closing, refinance, or other transaction.

IRS Online Account

Signing in to your IRS Online Account is the fastest way to see what you owe. Once you verify your identity, you can view balances by tax year, review up to five years of payment history, and download account transcripts.2Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals The balance you see reflects payments and credits already posted, but it does not project interest forward to a future date. If you plan to pay right now, that number is usually close enough. If your payment will take a few days to arrive and post, you need a forward-looking figure.

Phone Request

Individual taxpayers can call 800-829-1040 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. local time. Businesses call 800-829-4933 during the same hours.3Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Have your Social Security number or Employer Identification Number ready. Ask the representative to calculate your balance projected forward to a specific date. That projected date is the “good through” date, and it should be far enough out that your payment will arrive and process before it. A phone quote works well for planning; for a closing or a large multi-year balance, back it up with a written request.

Written Request

For a formal, documented payoff figure, send a letter to the IRS service center handling your account. There is no dedicated IRS form. Include your full legal name, address, taxpayer identification number, each tax form and tax period you want covered, and the calendar date you want the calculation run through. Being explicit about which years and forms are included matters, because it tells the IRS how to allocate your eventual payment; otherwise a payment can land on one year and leave another with a balance.

Send the letter by certified mail so you have proof of the submission date. Written requests generally take several weeks to process, so build that lead time in. If a real estate closing or refinance is driving the timing, start early.

What’s in the Quote and Why the “Good Through” Date Matters

The payoff quote breaks your liability into three parts: the original tax, accrued interest, and penalties.

The principal tax is what the IRS assessed, minus any payments or credits already applied. Compare it to your return or audit report; if something looks off, ask for a detailed breakdown, since discrepancies often trace to payments credited to the wrong year.

Interest runs at the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points and adjusts every quarter.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6621 – Determination of Rate of Interest The first-quarter 2026 underpayment rate is 7 percent,5Internal Revenue Service. Revenue Ruling 2025-22 – Determination of Rate of Interest and it drops to 6 percent for the second quarter.6Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates Because it compounds daily, balances grow faster than most people expect. Interest itself cannot be waived; it stops only when the balance hits zero.

Penalties usually mean failure-to-file (5 percent of unpaid tax per month, capped at 25 percent)7Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty and failure-to-pay (0.5 percent per month, also capped at 25 percent, cut to 0.25 percent per month when you have an approved installment agreement and filed on time).8Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty When both apply in the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount for that overlap. Penalties, unlike interest, can sometimes be reduced through First-Time Abatement or reasonable cause relief, either before you pay or afterward through a Form 843 refund claim.9Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief

The single most important number on the quote is the good-through date. The total is valid only if the IRS receives and processes your full payment on or before that date. Miss it by a day and interest has already ticked past the calculated figure, leaving a small residual that keeps growing. Pick a date that gives your payment method time to clear. IRS Direct Pay generally processes within two business days;10Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help mailed checks take longer.

Paying the Exact Amount

Pay the full quoted figure by the good-through date. Not a dollar less. Even a tiny shortfall leaves a residual that continues to accrue interest and penalties, which defeats the point of paying off in a lump sum.

The IRS accepts several payment methods:11Internal Revenue Service. Payments

  • Direct Pay is a free bank-account withdrawal through irs.gov. You get credit as of the date you select, even if the actual debit posts slightly later.10Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help
  • Same-day wire transfer is the fastest option for large payments. Download the Same-Day Taxpayer Worksheet from irs.gov, fill it out, and bring it to your bank. Paying off multiple tax years takes a separate worksheet for each. Your bank may charge a wire fee.12Internal Revenue Service. Same-Day Wire Federal Tax Payments
  • Check or money order should be payable to “U.S. Treasury” and include your name, address, daytime phone, SSN or EIN, the tax year, and the related form number such as “1040.” Mail to the address on your IRS notice or payoff quote.13Internal Revenue Service. Pay by Check or Money Order

Direct Pay and same-day wire give the clearest record of the payment date and the lowest risk of missing the deadline. If you mail a check, send it early through a trackable method.

Paying Off an Installment Agreement

If you are already on a monthly payment plan, you can pay the remaining balance in a lump sum at any time. Request a payoff quote that reflects payments already made, then pay by the good-through date. Keep making the scheduled monthly payments until the lump-sum payoff has posted to your account, because if the payoff fails to process for any reason, the installment agreement is still active and skipping a scheduled payment can trigger a default.

When Someone Else Requests the Payoff for You

If a tax professional, attorney, title company, or escrow agent needs to get the payoff amount on your behalf, the IRS requires written authorization first. Form 2848 (Power of Attorney) lets someone represent you before the IRS, including negotiating and requesting account information. Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) lets a third party inspect your records without representing you, which is what title companies and escrow agents typically use for a property transaction.

Either form has to specify the exact tax matters and tax periods covered.14Internal Revenue Service. Forms 2848 and 8821 for Tax-Advantaged Bonds The IRS will not release information to the third party until the authorization is processed, which can take several weeks. On a tight closing timeline, submit it well in advance.

If a Federal Tax Lien Is Involved

When the IRS has filed a Notice of Federal Tax Lien, paying the underlying debt is the direct path to clearing it. Once the balance hits zero, federal law requires the IRS to issue a Certificate of Release within 30 days,15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6325 – Release of Lien or Discharge of Property filed in the public records where the original lien was recorded.16Internal Revenue Service. IRM 5.12.3 – Lien Release and Related Topics Confirm your payoff quote explicitly covers every tax period on the lien notice; paying off only some of them leaves the lien in place for the rest.

If you need to sell property before the full debt is paid, Form 14135 lets you request a discharge of the lien from that specific property. The IRS can grant a discharge when it receives at least the value of its interest from the sale proceeds, or when the property remaining subject to the lien is worth at least double the outstanding liability plus any senior encumbrances.17Internal Revenue Service. Application for Certificate of Discharge of Property From Federal Tax Lien Title and escrow agents usually coordinate directly with the IRS on the payoff figure and proceed allocation.

If You Can’t Pay the Full Amount

A lump-sum payoff is the cleanest resolution, but it isn’t the only one. If the full figure is out of reach, an Offer in Compromise may settle the debt for less than owed when the IRS determines you cannot pay in full and the offer is the most it can reasonably expect to collect. The application uses Form 656 plus a detailed financial disclosure on Form 433-A or 433-B, and there is a $205 application fee and initial payment (both waived under the low-income certification). You must have filed all required returns and made required estimated payments for the current year, and you cannot be in open bankruptcy.18Internal Revenue Service. Offer in Compromise Form 656 BookletTopic No. 202 – Tax Payment Options

A Partial Payment Installment Agreement is another option: you make what you can afford each month, and any balance left when the collection period ends is written off. It requires a Collection Information Statement (Form 433-F or 433-A) with financial documentation.19Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 202 – Tax Payment Options The IRS generally has 10 years from the assessment date to collect, after which the Collection Statute Expiration Date bars further collection.20Internal Revenue Service. Time IRS Can Collect Tax Certain actions can pause or extend that clock, so get specific advice before assuming an old debt is about to age out.

Confirming the Balance Is Zero

After your payment posts, verify the account shows zero. The easiest check is your IRS Online Account, where balances by tax year and downloadable transcripts are available.21Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts You can also request an account transcript by mail using Form 4506-T.22Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T Wait at least 60 days after payment before pulling the transcript, because processing lag can make a good payment look outstanding for several weeks.

Keep the zero-balance transcript together with your payment confirmation, whether that is a Direct Pay receipt, wire confirmation, or canceled check. That pairing is your permanent proof the debt is satisfied.
