What Letter 6419 Is

The IRS mailed Letter 6419 from late December 2021 through January 2022 to households that received advance Child Tax Credit payments. Those monthly payments, authorized by the American Rescue Plan Act, ran July through December 2021 and represented roughly half of the credit a household would otherwise claim on its 2021 return.1Internal Revenue Service. The letter reports two figures: the total dollar amount of advance payments the IRS recorded sending to your household in 2021, and the number of qualifying children used to calculate those payments.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6419 Both matter. If the child count is wrong, the payment total is wrong too, and you’ll owe some of it back when you reconcile.

Married Couples Get Two Letters

If you file jointly, you and your spouse each receive a separate Letter 6419, and each one shows only half of the household’s advance payments. Add them together to get the correct total for your joint return.3Internal Revenue Service. If the Letter and Your Online Account Disagree

When the total on your Letter 6419 differs from what your IRS Online Account shows, the IRS tells taxpayers to use the Online Account figure. Online Account has the most current payment data, and the IRS advises against relying on tax transcripts for this reconciliation.4Internal Revenue Service. Using the Letter To File

The advance payment total goes on Schedule 8812 (Form 1040), which calculates the full Child Tax Credit and subtracts what you already received in advance.5Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) – Credits for Qualifying Children and Other Dependents

If your full credit exceeds the advance payments, the remaining balance reduces your tax or increases your refund. If your full credit is $3,600 and you received $1,800 in advance, the other $1,800 shows up when you file.

If the advance payments exceeded your actual credit entitlement, you owe the difference back. This typically happens when income rose, a child aged out, or custody changed during the year. The excess appears as additional tax on your return.6Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Child Tax Credit and Advance Child Tax Credit Payments – Topic H: Reconciling Your Advance Child Tax Credit Payments on Your 2021 Tax Return

Repayment Protection If You Got Too Much

Not every household that received too much has to pay all of it back. For 2021, if your main home was in the United States for more than half the year and your modified adjusted gross income was low enough, some or all of the overpayment was forgiven.6Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Child Tax Credit and Advance Child Tax Credit Payments – Topic H: Reconciling Your Advance Child Tax Credit Payments on Your 2021 Tax Return

  • Full protection at modified AGI at or below $60,000 (married filing jointly), $50,000 (head of household), or $40,000 (single or married filing separately).
  • No protection at modified AGI at or above $120,000 (married filing jointly), $100,000 (head of household), or $80,000 (single or married filing separately).
  • Partial protection for incomes between those ranges, phasing out gradually.

The full protection amount equals $2,000 times the difference between the number of qualifying children the IRS used and the number that actually qualified on your return. If you fell in the full-protection range and the IRS overcounted by one child, up to $2,000 of the excess was forgiven.

If the Numbers on Your Letter Look Wrong

Don’t file the letter’s number just to avoid a fight with the IRS. Check your Online Account first, since the IRS treats it as more reliable than the letter.4Internal Revenue Service. Filing a figure that differs from the IRS’s records may trigger a CP2000 notice proposing changes to your return. A CP2000 is a proposal, not a bill, and you can respond with the documentation that supports your number.7Internal Revenue Service. Why the Letter Is a 2021-Only Document

Advance Child Tax Credit payments were a one-time program under the American Rescue Plan Act, limited to July through December 2021. Congress did not extend them, and the IRS has not issued equivalent letters for later years because there are no advance payments to reconcile. Schedule 8812 is still used to claim the standard Child Tax Credit going forward, but the reconciliation step is gone.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule 8812 (Form 1040) If you’re filing a late or amended 2021 return, Letter 6419 is still the document you need.
