To book an IRS in-person appointment, call 844-545-5640 and describe the tax issue you need help with. Every Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) works by appointment only, and the phone representative will either schedule you at your nearest office or point you to a faster online option if a visit isn’t actually necessary.1Internal Revenue Service. Here’s What Taxpayers Should Know Before Visiting an IRS Office
Check Whether You Need to Go In at All
A lot of what sends people to a TAC can be done from a browser. Through your IRS online account, you can view your balance and up to five years of payment history, check your refund, pull transcripts and wage documents like W-2s and 1099s, set up or modify a payment plan, schedule bank payments up to 365 days out, and request an Identity Protection PIN.2Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals You can also view digital copies of certain IRS notices and check the status of a mail audit.
Save the office visit for things that genuinely need a person in front of you: authenticating original identification documents, resolving a tangled notice, or handling something phone support keeps bouncing.
What Taxpayer Assistance Centers Actually Do
TACs focus on a specific menu of services. The most common reasons for an appointment:
- ITIN applications and renewals, which require submitting original identification (passport, national ID card) that staff authenticate on the spot.3Internal Revenue Service. Where to Submit an ITIN Application – IRS Courseware
- Identity verification when a letter such as a 5071C or 6483C directs you to appear in person.
- Account and notice disputes that couldn’t be resolved by phone.
- Picking up tax account transcripts when online access isn’t working.
- Cash tax payments, at locations that accept them, scheduled 30 to 60 days ahead.4Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes With Cash
TAC staff do not prepare or file returns. If you need free filing help and your income is $69,000 or less, ask about Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA).5Internal Revenue Service. How to Schedule
Start at the IRS “Contact Your Local Office” page to find the nearest TAC, confirm which services that location offers, and get the address.7Internal Revenue Service. Contact Your Local IRS Office Then call 844-545-5640, the dedicated scheduling line, which operates Monday through Friday.8Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Alaska and Hawaii callers follow Pacific time.
When you call, describe the specific tax matter. The representative will screen your request, may resolve it on the spot, or may steer you to an online tool. If a visit is needed, you’ll provide your name, phone number, and the service required, then get a confirmation with date, time, and location.
Paying cash takes more lead time. The IRS recommends calling 30 to 60 days before your intended payment date, since not every office accepts cash and availability is limited.4Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes With Cash
Saturday Hours During Filing Season
During the 2026 filing season, many TACs open on select Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The dates are February 28, March 28, April 11, April 25, May 30, and June 27.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Face-to-Face Saturday Help Routine services are available except cash payments. Not every location participates on every date, so confirm your local office before you drive over.
Deaf or Hard of Hearing Taxpayers
If you need a sign language interpreter, the IRS will schedule you for a later date to arrange one. You can also book directly by calling TTY/TDD 800-829-4059.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Face-to-Face Saturday Help
What to Bring
What you carry in depends on why you’re going, but a few items are universal. Bring a current government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and your Social Security card or ITIN letter. For a joint return, bring the same for your spouse. Include any IRS notice or letter that prompted the visit and the tax return for the year in question.
Identity Verification Visits
If you were sent to verify identity in person, typically through a Letter 5071C or 6483C, the requirements are heavier. Bring the letter itself, the return referenced in it with all supporting documents like W-2s and 1099s, and a prior year’s return as well.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Letter 5071C
For a 6483C letter, the IRS asks for two to three identity documents. At least one must be a primary document (a government-issued photo ID showing your current name and date of birth), and at least one must show your current address. You may also need a document displaying your full Social Security number. Acceptable secondary documents include a Social Security card, birth certificate, marriage certificate, school ID with photo, voter registration card, or vehicle registration.11Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6483C Recent utility bills, bank statements, and medical bills work for address verification but can’t be older than 90 days. Your confirmation email will list the exact documents required.
Sending Someone in Your Place
If you can’t go yourself, an authorized representative can, with the right form. Form 2848 (Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative) lets a qualified individual represent you, speak for you, and access your confidential tax information; the person must be eligible to practice before the IRS, such as an attorney, CPA, or enrolled agent.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative Form 8821 (Tax Information Authorization) is lighter: it lets your designee inspect and receive your information but doesn’t authorize them to represent you or act on your account.13Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8821
Language Assistance
If English isn’t your primary language, tell the scheduler. When a bilingual staff member is available, they’ll help you directly. Otherwise, the IRS uses an Over-the-Phone Interpreter service that connects a three-way call between you, the IRS employee, and a professional interpreter.14Internal Revenue Service. Appointment Day
Arrive early. IRS offices are federal facilities with security checkpoints, and clearing them takes time. Expect belongings to be screened, which can include opening bags or running them through an X-ray machine. Firearms, ammunition, replica weapons, explosives, and pepper spray are strictly prohibited and will get you turned away at the door.15Internal Revenue Service. 10.2.18 Physical Access Control (PAC) – Section: Prohibited Items Leave anything questionable in the car.
After security, you’ll check in with a staff member who confirms your identity and appointment. If you’re running late or need to cancel, call the appointment line as soon as possible; showing up late may mean rescheduling. During the meeting, the representative reviews your documents, works through the issue, and explains next steps. Follow-up items typically arrive by mail.
If Your Issue Still Isn’t Resolved
Sometimes a TAC visit doesn’t fix the problem. If you’ve been dealing with the IRS for more than 30 days without resolution, missed a promised response date, or are facing economic harm such as a frozen refund you need for rent, the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) may be able to step in. TAS is an independent organization within the IRS.
TAS accepts cases involving financial hardship, an immediate threat of adverse IRS action like a levy or lien, or situations where IRS systems and processes have failed to resolve your problem.16Internal Revenue Service. 13.1.7 Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) Case Criteria Call 1-877-777-4778 or submit Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance) by mail, fax, or email.17Taxpayer Advocate Service. Once TAS accepts your case, you’ll be assigned a dedicated advocate and should hear from them within 30 days of submitting your form.
