IRS Economic Impact Payments: Deadlines, Status, and Tracing

To check the status of an IRS stimulus check, sign in to your IRS Online Account and open the Tax Records section, which lists the total amount of each of the three Economic Impact Payments the IRS sent you. The deadlines to claim any missing stimulus money on a tax return have now passed — May 17, 2024 for the 2020 payments and April 15, 2025 for the 2021 payment — so verifying and, if necessary, tracing what was already issued is the remaining route.1Internal Revenue Service. What the Payments Were

The federal government issued three rounds of Economic Impact Payments between 2020 and 2021, each structured as an advance on a refundable tax credit. Knowing the maximum amounts helps you judge whether the totals in your IRS records look right.

The third round was broader in one important way. The first two rounds only counted children under 17. The third counted college students, adult dependents with disabilities, and elderly parents you claimed on your return.2U.S. Department of the Treasury. Economic Impact Payments Payments phased out at higher incomes; for the third round, single filers were cut off at $80,000 AGI, heads of household at $120,000, and married joint filers at $160,000.4Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic A: General Information

The Claim Deadlines Have Closed

Federal law gives you three years from a return’s due date to file for a refund. Once that window closes, the IRS cannot legally issue the money, even for a person who was clearly eligible.5Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund

The 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit had to be claimed by May 17, 2024. The 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit had to be claimed by April 15, 2025. There is no extension for the Recovery Rebate Credit. Before the 2020 deadline passed, the IRS estimated nearly 940,000 taxpayers had unclaimed refunds totaling over $1 billion for that year alone.6Taxpayer Advocate Service. The same closed window applies to amending a return you already filed. Form 1040-X can still be filed electronically for the current and two prior years, but for 2020 and 2021 the refund clock has run out, so an amendment correcting Line 30 today generally cannot produce a payment.5Internal Revenue Service. How to Check What the IRS Sent You

Three sources show the same underlying record from different angles. If they disagree, the Account Transcript is the definitive figure.

Letter 6475 and Earlier Notices

The IRS mailed written confirmation after each round. Letter 6475, sent starting in January 2022, confirmed the total third-round amount, including any “plus-up” adjustments.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6475 If you kept those notices, they are still valid records.

Account Transcript

Your Account Transcript for the relevant tax year lists the exact dates and dollar amounts of any stimulus payments the IRS recorded as sent. Request it through your online account or by mailing Form 4506-T. The transcript reflects what the IRS believes it paid, which is the figure that controlled every Recovery Rebate Credit calculation.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Automatic Payments Sent in Late 2024

In December 2024, the IRS announced it would automatically send payments to roughly one million taxpayers who had filed a 2021 return but left Line 30 blank or entered $0 despite being eligible for the third-round Recovery Rebate Credit. The IRS calculated the amount from its own records and issued the money without requiring any action. Payments went to the bank account or mailing address on the most recent return.

If you filed a 2021 return and think you should have been in that group, check your IRS Online Account for a payment record or a pending adjustment. If the account shows a payment issued but nothing reached you, the trace process below is the next step.

Tracing a Payment the IRS Says Was Sent

If your records show a stimulus payment was issued but you never received it, you can still request a payment trace. A trace investigates whether a check was cashed, whether a direct deposit went to the wrong account, or whether the payment was returned to the IRS.

You can start a trace two ways. Call the IRS at 800-829-1954 and use the automated system, or call 800-829-1040 to speak with a representative. On a joint return, the automated line will not work and you have to speak with a representative. You can also complete Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, and mail or fax it to the IRS; on a joint return, both spouses must sign.10Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries

Processing times depend on how the payment went out. For a paper check, expect a response in about six weeks. If the check was never cashed, the IRS will cancel it and reissue the payment. If it was cashed by someone other than you, the Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send a claim package with a copy of the cashed check for you to review and dispute. Direct deposit traces run longer, generally 90 to 120 days.

Why a Refund Was Smaller Than Expected

The advance stimulus payments were generally protected from garnishment by private creditors, and the second and third rounds carried explicit protections in the underlying legislation. The Recovery Rebate Credit worked differently. Because it was claimed on a tax return and rolled into the refund, the resulting refund was treated like any other refund and was subject to the Treasury Offset Program.6Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Treasury Offset Program intercepts federal payments, including tax refunds, from people who owe delinquent federal or state debts. Past-due child support, defaulted federal student loans, and unpaid state or federal taxes could all reduce a refund before it reached you.11U.S. Department of the Treasury. Treasury Offset Program If your refund came in short during the years you claimed the credit, an offset notice from the Bureau of the Fiscal Service will show what was taken and which agency received it.
