The Two Numbers and When to Use Each

Two lines cover almost every amended return call, with a couple of specialty numbers for particular situations.

Wait times on 800-829-1040 can easily exceed 30 minutes during filing season, roughly January through April. Calling right when lines open or late in the afternoon usually helps.

Try the Online Tool First

The IRS explicitly directs taxpayers not to call unless the online tool tells them to. “Where’s My Amended Return?” tracks Form 1040-X for the current tax year and up to three prior years, and updates about three weeks after you submit the return.5Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?

You’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and the ZIP code on your Form 1040-X.6Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return? Find Out on IRS.gov The tool shows one of three statuses:

  • Received. Your Form 1040-X is in the IRS system.
  • Adjusted. The IRS has reviewed the form and is processing the changes.
  • Completed. Processing is done, and any refund has been issued or balance finalized.

If the tool shows no record more than three weeks after filing, or if it displays a message telling you to contact the IRS, that’s when to pick up the phone. Try 866-464-2050 first for an automated update, then 800-829-1040 if you still need a person.5Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return?

What to Have Ready Before You Call

Calling without your paperwork usually ends with the representative telling you to call back. Have all of this in front of you first:

  • Your Social Security number, plus the SSNs and birth dates of anyone else on the return
  • The filing status from your original return
  • A copy of your original Form 1040 for the tax year in question
  • A copy of your Form 1040-X
  • The date you mailed or e-filed the amended return
  • Any IRS letters or notices you’ve received about the return

The representative will verify your identity before discussing anything on your account, and may ask you to confirm the address on file or the refund amount from your original return.7Internal Revenue Service. Be Ready to Verify Your Identity When Calling the IRS Having the specific dollar changes you made on the 1040-X in front of you helps too, because the agent will cross-reference them against IRS records.

Having Someone Else Call for You

If you want a tax professional or a family member to call the IRS on your behalf, they need Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative, on file. That form authorizes a qualified individual to represent you, inspect your confidential tax information, and speak to the IRS about your account.8Internal Revenue Service. About Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative Form 8821 is a lighter option that lets someone view your tax information, but it does not authorize them to speak to the IRS or advocate for you. For an actual phone call, Form 2848 is the one you want.

When to Call vs. Keep Waiting

The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks for Form 1040-X processing, and some cases take up to 16 weeks.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions Returns that need error correction or other special handling can run longer.9Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Common reasons for delay include math errors on the form, missing signatures, and cases where the IRS needs to contact a third party such as an employer to verify information.

The tracker won’t show anything for the first three weeks, so calling before then won’t help. If you’re past 16 weeks and the tool still shows “Received” with no progress, calling 866-464-2050 or 800-829-1040 is reasonable at that point.

When Calling Isn’t Getting You Anywhere

If your amended return is stuck well past the published timeframe and IRS phone calls haven’t resolved it, the Taxpayer Advocate Service can step in. TAS is an independent organization within the IRS that helps taxpayers who can’t resolve problems through normal channels. The number is 877-777-4778.10Taxpayer Advocate Service. Contact Us

TAS generally gets involved when a delay has run more than 30 days past the IRS’s published processing time. For an amended return, that works out to roughly 19 weeks with no resolution: 16 weeks of processing plus the 30-day threshold. TAS can also help earlier if the delay is causing financial hardship, such as making it hard to pay rent or medical bills while a refund sits.
