You can check your IRS amended return status with the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool at irs.gov or by calling 866-464-2050, but neither will show anything for about three weeks after the IRS receives your Form 1040-X.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return After that, expect a total wait of 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes stretching to 16, while the return moves through three status stages.
What You Need to Look It Up
The IRS matches you against three pieces of information. Have all three before you open the tool:
- Your Social Security number or ITIN from the return you amended
- The primary taxpayer’s date of birth
- The five-digit ZIP code from your Form 1040-X
If anything doesn’t match, the system returns nothing. The usual culprit is the ZIP code. If you moved between filing the original return and the amendment, use the ZIP that appears on the 1040-X itself, not your current address.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X FAQs
Where to Check
Two IRS tools show the same status information for your Form 1040-X.
The “Where’s My Amended Return?” (WMAR) tool at irs.gov is the fastest path. Enter your SSN, date of birth, and ZIP code and it displays your current stage. It covers the current tax year and up to three prior years, and it’s available 24 hours a day.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return
Your IRS Online Account shows the same three processing stages and also gives you access to notices and balance details. It requires identity verification through ID.me, which takes more setup than WMAR.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X FAQs
Whether you filed on paper or electronically, don’t check before the three-week mark. The return simply won’t appear yet. Paper filers should add another week or two for mail transit before the clock starts.
What the Three Statuses Mean
The WMAR tool and Online Account report one of three statuses.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X FAQs
Received
Your Form 1040-X is logged in and waiting for a tax examiner. No review has started. Most of the total wait happens here, and there’s nothing to do but check back periodically.
Adjusted
An examiner has finished the review and updated your tax account. One of three things is now true: you’re getting an additional refund, you owe more tax, or the changes wash out. The IRS will mail a notice explaining exactly what changed.
Completed
Processing is finished and the final notice has been mailed. If a refund is due, it has been issued. Direct deposit is available only if you e-filed the amendment for tax year 2021 or later and requested it; everyone else gets a paper check.3Internal Revenue Service. Why It Takes So Long
The IRS asks you to allow 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X, and up to 16 weeks in some cases.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return That’s much slower than the 21-day turnaround people are used to on original e-filed returns.
Amended returns don’t run through the same automated pipeline as original filings. A tax examiner has to pull your original return, compare it to the 1040-X, and confirm each change. Amendments involving credits, complex deductions, or income adjustments take longer to review. Volume spikes after the April filing deadline stretch the timeline further.
E-filing removes mail transit time but doesn’t meaningfully speed up the examiner’s review itself.
When to Call the IRS
Don’t call unless the online tool tells you to, or more than 16 weeks have passed without the status changing.4Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Calling earlier won’t move your return through the queue, and the representative will usually tell you what the tool already shows.
When those conditions are met, the dedicated amended return line is 866-464-2050.5Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X 3 Have your SSN, date of birth, and ZIP code ready. Both the phone line and the online tool are available in English and Spanish.
What Happens After “Adjusted”
Once the status flips to Adjusted, you’ll know from the mailed notice whether the outcome is a refund, a balance due, or no change.
If you’re owed a refund, the IRS pays interest on any overpayment that takes longer than 45 days to process from the date you filed the amendment.6eCFR. 26 CFR 301.6611-1 – Interest on Overpayments Since most amendments run longer than that, some interest is typical. That interest is taxable in the year you receive it.
If you owe more tax, pay as soon as you can. Interest runs from the original due date of the return, not from the date you filed the amendment, and a failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5 percent per month applies to the unpaid balance, up to 25 percent.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return You can pay through IRS Direct Pay, EFTPS, or by card at irs.gov/payments. If the notice says the IRS partially or fully disallowed your changes, it will also explain your right to appeal and the deadline for doing so.9Internal Revenue Service. Preparing a Request for Appeals
One Deadline Worth Knowing
Tracking status is moot if your amendment was too late to claim a refund in the first place. Federal law requires an amended return that claims a refund to be filed within three years of the original return’s filing date or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund Miss that window and the IRS keeps the money even if your claim is valid. Amendments that don’t claim a refund, such as filing status corrections, have no statutory deadline.11Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund
