The IRS amended return processing time is typically 8 to 12 weeks, and can stretch to 16 weeks or longer when the return needs extra review.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return The clock starts when the IRS receives your Form 1040-X, not the day you send it. E-filing saves a week or two of mail and data-entry time, but the review itself takes just as long either way.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions
Why It Takes That Long
Original returns run through automated systems that handle millions of filings at once. Amended returns don’t. An IRS employee has to pull your original return, compare it against the changes you’re requesting, verify your supporting documentation, and manually adjust your account. That human review is the bottleneck, and it applies whether you e-filed or mailed a paper form.
E-filing helps at the edges. It cuts out postal transit, sorting, and keying, which the IRS estimates saves one to two weeks.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions The core review still runs its usual 8 to 12 weeks once your return enters the queue. If you filed on paper, plan for the full 16-week window as a realistic expectation.
How to Track Your Amended Return
The IRS offers a dedicated Where’s My Amended Return? tool. You’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and ZIP code to sign in.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Wait about three weeks after filing before you check. The return simply won’t be in the system before then.3Internal Revenue Service. How Long Does the IRS Take to Process an Amended Return
The tool reports three stages. Received means the IRS has your Form 1040-X but hasn’t started reviewing it. Adjusted means the review is done and your account has been changed, which could produce a refund, a balance due, or no net change. Completed means processing is finished and the IRS will mail a notice with the details.
The tool covers the current tax year and up to three prior years. Some returns never appear in it, including those with a foreign address, carryback claims, injured spouse claims, and returns being handled by specialized units like Examination or Bankruptcy.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Corrections filed on a fresh Form 1040 rather than Form 1040-X also won’t show up.
What Slows an Amended Return Down
The 16-week window already builds in some slack, but plenty of amendments run past it. The most preventable delay is an incomplete filing. A missing signature, a schedule left off, or a blank line that needed a number all trigger a letter from the IRS asking for the missing piece, and the clock effectively stops until you respond.
Amendments touching complex parts of the tax code get routed to specialized teams. Business income adjustments, foreign tax credits, and changes involving pass-through entities all fall into that category. The handoff and the specialized review both add time.
If your original return was flagged for identity theft or fraud, your amended return gets extra scrutiny. The IRS won’t adjust your account until it’s satisfied the amendment is legitimate, and that verification runs on its own timeline.
Filing a second amended return while the first is still in progress is one of the worst things you can do to your wait time. The IRS essentially has to start over to reconcile both versions. If you notice a mistake on your 1040-X, wait until the first one finishes before filing a correction.
When to Call the IRS
Don’t call the moment the return feels overdue. The official guidance is to contact the IRS only if the Where’s My Amended Return tool specifically tells you to, or if more than 16 weeks have passed since you mailed a paper return.4Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Calling earlier gets you nothing the tool can’t already show.

What Arrives at the End
Once the review is finished, the IRS mails a notice explaining exactly what changed: the adjustments to income, deductions, credits, and the net effect on your tax bill or refund.
If You’re Getting a Refund
Refunds from amended returns can now go directly to your bank account if you e-filed the 1040-X and provided your bank information on the form.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions Paper-filed amendments still produce a paper check mailed to the address on file.
The IRS may owe you interest on that refund. Interest on overpayments generally runs from the original due date of the return (or your filing date if you filed late) until the refund is issued.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments The IRS gets a 45-day administrative window to pay without owing interest, but amended returns almost always exceed that window, so interest typically accrues.7Internal Revenue Service. Interest The overpayment rate for individuals adjusts quarterly; it is 7% for the first quarter of 2026 and 6% for the second.8Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8
If You Owe More Tax
When the amendment increases your liability, the notice includes a bill. Interest on the underpayment runs from the original due date of the return, not from the date you filed the amendment, until you pay in full.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653 – IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges The underpayment rate for the second quarter of 2026 is 6% per year, compounded daily.8Internal Revenue Service. A failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax also applies for each month or partial month the balance remains outstanding, up to 25%.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Don’t try to add your own interest or penalty figures to the 1040-X. The IRS calculates those separately and includes them in the bill.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 308 – Amended Returns
Filing Deadline for the Amendment Itself
If you haven’t filed yet and you’re claiming a refund, you have three years from your original filing date or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund Returns filed before the regular due date count as filed on the due date for this calculation. If your amendment will increase your tax rather than produce a refund, there is no formal filing deadline, but interest and penalties accumulate from the original due date, so waiting costs money.5Internal Revenue Service. Don’t Overlook Your State Return
A federal amendment that changes your adjusted gross income, deductions, or credits almost always affects your state tax liability. Most states with an income tax require you to file an amended state return after a federal change, typically within 90 to 180 days of the federal adjustment becoming final. Rules and deadlines vary by state, so check your state tax agency’s website when you file the federal 1040-X. Missing the state deadline can bring its own penalties and interest on any additional tax owed.
