To update the address on your EFIN, sign in to your IRS e-Services account, open your existing IRS e-file application, edit the business address fields, and have the Principal or Responsible Official electronically sign the modification. You have 30 days from the date of the change to submit the update, and missing that window can lead to your EFIN being inactivated.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN The submission itself is quick. IRS review of the change takes weeks.
The 30-Day Deadline Is Firm
The IRS requires you to update your e-file application within 30 days whenever your business address, phone number, or personnel changes.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN If the application falls out of date, the IRS can inactivate the EFIN, which cuts off your ability to e-file returns for clients. Reactivation is slower and less certain than updating on time.
There’s a second reason to move quickly. The address on your EFIN is where the IRS sends compliance notices, security alerts, and program updates. A suitability review notice that reaches an old address and goes unanswered can escalate from a warning to a full suspension of your e-file privileges.
What to Have Ready Before You Log In
Gather a few things first. You’ll need your nine-digit EFIN, which appears on the acceptance letter the IRS sent when your original application was approved.2Internal Revenue Service. FAQs About Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFIN) You’ll also need access to your IRS e-Services account, which uses an ID.me identity-verified login.3Internal Revenue Service. E-Services Have the new address written out exactly as you want it recorded, including suite or unit numbers.
If your ID.me account isn’t set up yet, don’t wait. Verification involves a government-issued photo ID and a selfie for facial matching, and it can take extra time if you’re routed to a live video call.4Internal Revenue Service. Editing the Address in Your E-File Application
Sign in to the IRS e-Services portal with your ID.me credentials. From the dashboard, open your IRS e-file application and choose the option to modify it. Navigate to the business or contact information section, where the address fields are.
Enter the new street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Read every character twice. A transposed ZIP digit or a misspelled street name can delay processing or cause IRS mail to bounce, which defeats the point of the update. Leave other fields alone if they haven’t changed. Editing principal information or banking details when you don’t need to can trigger additional review steps.
At the end, the Principal or Responsible Official electronically signs the modification. That signature carries the same legal weight as signing a paper form. Once you submit, the system returns a confirmation page with a tracking number. Save or print it as proof of your submission date.
How Long Processing Takes
The change doesn’t take effect the moment you hit submit. General IRS address change processing runs four to six weeks.6Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Your application status may show as pending during that time. You can keep e-filing returns while the update is in review, but IRS correspondence sent during that window may still go to your old address.
Once the update is approved, the IRS sends a confirmation letter to the new address to verify it’s deliverable. Keep that letter with your compliance records. If nothing arrives within about six weeks, call the e-help Desk to check the status.
When an Address Update Isn’t the Right Fix
A modification works when your firm is moving from one location to another. It doesn’t cover two other situations. If you’re opening a second office and plan to transmit e-filed returns from both locations, the IRS requires a separate EFIN application for the new office. And EFINs are not transferable, so if new owners take over the practice, they must apply for their own EFIN.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN Swapping in new principal names on an existing EFIN is not a workaround for a change of ownership.
Other Accounts That Won’t Update Automatically
Changing your EFIN address doesn’t change your address anywhere else at the IRS. Each registration is maintained on its own. PTIN account addresses have to be updated through the PTIN system separately.7Internal Revenue Service. Update Your PTIN Account Information If your firm is authorized as a Reporting Agent under Form 8655, that authorization requires contacting the IRS directly to change the address on file.8Internal Revenue Service. Form 8655 (Rev. January 2024) – Reporting Agent Authorization Your EIN records, CAF number, and any state-level preparer registrations also need their own updates. Make a checklist and work through everything inside the same 30-day window.
If Your EFIN Has Already Been Inactivated
If you missed the deadline and the EFIN is already inactivated, the e-Services portal alone won’t fix it. Call the IRS e-help Desk. The same applies if the EFIN hasn’t been used in the last two years, which can also trigger inactivation.2Internal Revenue Service. FAQs About Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFIN)
