How to Request an IRS Transcript: Online, Mail, Phone, or Form 4506-T

To request an IRS transcript, you have three free options: sign in to your IRS Individual Online Account for an immediate PDF, use the Get Transcript by Mail tool or Form 4506-T to have one sent to your address on file in five to ten days, or call the automated line at 800-908-9946 or visit a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Transcripts are computer-generated summaries of your return data, not photocopies, and they satisfy most mortgage, student loan, and FAFSA requests.

Pick the Right Transcript First

Reordering because you got the wrong document is the most common mistake. Five transcript types exist, and they cover different information and different year ranges.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

  • Tax Return Transcript. Most line items from your original Form 1040 as filed. This is the one mortgage lenders usually ask for. Current year and three prior years.
  • Tax Account Transcript. Account status after filing: payments, penalty assessments, and IRS adjustments. Current year plus nine prior years online, or three prior years by mail or phone. Older years require Form 4506-T.
  • Record of Account. The Tax Return Transcript and Tax Account Transcript combined. Current year and three prior years.
  • Wage and Income Transcript. Data from W-2s, 1099s, 1098s, and 5498s reported to the IRS on your behalf. Current year plus nine prior years. New filing-year data usually appears in the first week of February.
  • Verification of Non-filing Letter. Confirms the IRS has no return on record for a given year. Often needed for FAFSA when a parent or student didn’t file. Available after June 15 for the current year, or anytime for the three prior years.

One catch on the Wage and Income Transcript: the online version won’t generate if you have more than roughly 85 income documents on file. Above that, submit Form 4506-T by mail.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Order Online for Immediate Access

The fastest route is your IRS Individual Online Account, where you can view, print, or download transcripts as PDFs the moment you log in. Setting the account up requires identity verification through ID.me. You need a government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a smartphone or webcam to take a selfie the system matches against the ID.2Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services

If you already have an ID.me account from another government agency or an earlier IRS tool, the same credentials work here.2Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services Once verified, you select the transcript type and tax year, and the document loads.

Not everyone clears ID.me on the first try. If verification fails, use the mail, phone, or in-person options instead. If the system blocks your request with a message about a possible identity-theft flag, call 800-829-1040 to reach an IRS representative.3Internal Revenue Service. Order by Mail

You don’t need an online account to get a transcript. The IRS offers a Get Transcript by Mail option on its website that skips the full ID.me process. You enter basic identifying information and the transcript ships to the address the IRS has on file. This works for Tax Return and Tax Account Transcripts for the current year and three prior years, with delivery in five to ten calendar days.1Internal Revenue Service. When to Use Form 4506-T

For anything beyond the basic mail request, use Form 4506-T. That includes Wage and Income Transcripts, Verification of Non-filing Letters, transcripts for years past what online and phone offer, business return transcripts, and any situation where you can’t use the website at all.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return

Enter your name and Social Security Number (or ITIN or EIN for a business) exactly as they appeared on the original return, along with your current address. Line 6 selects the transcript type, Line 7 requests a Verification of Non-filing Letter, and Line 8 covers Wage and Income Transcripts. Sign, date, and mail or fax the form to the IRS processing center listed for the state where you lived when that return was filed.5Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Filing Form 4506-T Delivery runs five to ten calendar days after the IRS receives the form, and it goes only to the address on the form.6Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts

If you only need a Tax Return Transcript as an individual filer, Form 4506-T-EZ is a shorter version with fewer fields, limited to the current year and three prior years.7Internal Revenue Service. Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return Transcript

Order by Phone or in Person

The automated phone line at 800-908-9946 handles Tax Return and Tax Account Transcripts for the current year and three prior years. You enter your identifying information on the keypad, and the transcript arrives by mail in five to ten calendar days. Phone requests can’t be delivered any other way. The system is available in Spanish, though transcripts themselves print in English only.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs

For in-person service, call 844-545-5640 to book an appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center. Bring a government-issued photo ID and your Social Security Number, and the representative can print your transcript during the visit.8Internal Revenue Service. Contact Your Local IRS Office

When a Lender Wants It Sent Directly

If a mortgage lender or bank needs the transcript straight from the IRS instead of from you, you’ll sign Form 4506-C. That form authorizes the IRS to send your transcript to an approved participant in the Income Verification Express Service (IVES). The lender submits the form and receives the transcript; the $4 per-transcript fee is charged to them.9Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service10Internal Revenue Service. Transcript vs. Full Return Copy

A transcript is not a photocopy. If you actually need the original return with all attachments, that’s a separate product: Form 4506, $30 per return, up to 75 calendar days to process.11Internal Revenue Service. Request for Copy of Tax Return For most lender and financial aid requests, the free transcript is enough.

If the Address Is Wrong or the Transcript Looks Off

Mail-based requests go wherever the IRS has your address on file. If you’ve moved and haven’t updated it, the transcript follows the old address. File Form 8822, put the new address on your next return, or contact the IRS directly. Address changes take four to six weeks to process, so start early if you have a deadline. A USPS forwarding order sometimes updates IRS records through the National Change of Address database, but the IRS recommends notifying them directly rather than counting on it.12Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes

Two columns on your transcript labeled “per return” and “per computer” mean the IRS adjusted your figures during processing. The “per return” side is what you filed; “per computer” is the IRS correction. If a lender flags the difference, request a Record of Account Transcript, which shows the full picture including amendments and post-filing adjustments.3Internal Revenue Service. If your transcript shows income you never earned or a return you never filed, call 800-829-1040 right away. Entries you don’t recognize can indicate identity theft, and the IRS has a dedicated process for those cases.3Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs
