How to Get a Military W2 After Separation: myPay, askDFAS, and Fixes

To get your military W2 after separation, log into the DFAS myPay portal and download it from the tax statements section. If your myPay access has already expired, request a duplicate through the askDFAS online tool, by fax or mail, or by calling DFAS at 1-888-332-7411. Speed matters here, because myPay accounts are purged roughly 13 months after you leave service.

Start With myPay

myPay is the fastest route and is available 24 hours a day. Once you’re in, go to the tax statements section, select the year, and download or print the form.1Defense Finance and Accounting Service. myPay System Information

Your Common Access Card no longer authenticates you after separation, so you’ll need the username and password you set up while still in uniform. If you never created personal credentials, or you’ve forgotten them, click “Forgot or Need a Password” on the myPay homepage. You’ll be asked for two of the following: your myPay login ID, your Social Security number, or the email address on your account. From there you can answer your security questions to reset the password right away, or have a temporary password sent by text, email, or mail.2Defense Finance and Accounting Service. myPay Login Assistance

The 13-Month Window

Your myPay account stays active for about 13 months after your separation date.3Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Getting into myPay After You Separate After that, DFAS purges the account and your online access is gone for good. If you separated in June 2025, you have until roughly July 2026 to pull anything down. Log in now, download every tax statement and Leave and Earnings Statement you might ever need, and save them somewhere you’ll still have in five years.

If You’ve Lost myPay Access

Three channels are open to you: the askDFAS online tool, a written request by fax or mail, or a phone call. All of them end with DFAS mailing a hard copy to the address on file, so make sure that address is current before you submit anything.

askDFAS

The askDFAS application on the DFAS website lets you submit a secure request for a duplicate W2 through an online form.4Defense Finance and Accounting Service. • Mail: Defense Finance and Accounting Service, U.S. Military Retired Pay, 8899 E. 56th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46249-1200

Phone

Call the DFAS customer care center at 1-888-332-7411, staffed Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Time.6Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Customer Service For separated Army, Navy, and Marine Corps members, select option 3. Recently separated Air Force and Space Force members may need to contact the Total Force Service Center at 1-800-525-0102 for pay-related issues, though DFAS still handles the W2s themselves.

When W2s Actually Post

DFAS releases W2s on a rolling schedule each January. For the 2025 tax year, Reserve Army W2s posted to myPay on January 7, 2026, Active Army W2s on January 21, and travel or miscellaneous W2s by January 31, with other branches on a similar timeline. Paper copies mailed by the U.S. Postal Service go out no later than January 31.7Soldier for Life. 2026-01 DFAS 2025 Tax Statement Release For 2026 tax year W2s used when filing in early 2027, DFAS must furnish them by February 1, 2027, under federal rules.8Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026)

If your W2 hasn’t shown up by mid-February, check myPay first, then verify that the mailing address DFAS has for you is current. Only after those two checks should you assume something is wrong and reach out.

If Your W2 Is Wrong

Errors happen: a wrong income figure, incorrect withholding, or combat pay that wasn’t properly excluded. You’ll need a corrected form (W-2c) from DFAS. Call 1-888-332-7411 or submit the correction request through askDFAS.5Defense Finance and Accounting Service. 1099-R and W-2 Tax Statement Requests Your former military finance office can also help. Recently separated Air Force and Space Force members may need to route corrections through the Total Force Service Center at 1-800-525-0102.

If Your W2 Never Arrives

If you’ve tried every channel and still don’t have a W2 by the time you need to file, the IRS provides a workaround: Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2. Before using it, the IRS expects you to have tried getting the W2 from DFAS and, if that didn’t work, to have called the IRS at 800-829-1040 so they can attempt to reach DFAS on your behalf.9Internal Revenue Service. Form 4852 – Substitute for Form W-2

On Form 4852 you enter your best estimates of wages and taxes withheld, drawn from your final Leave and Earnings Statement. The form asks you to explain how you arrived at the numbers and what steps you took to get the real W2. Attach it to your 1040 when you file. If the actual W2 later shows different figures, you’ll have to file an amended return, so Form 4852 is a last resort, not a shortcut.

Before You Separate

If you’re reading this while still in uniform, the single most useful thing you can do is set up your myPay personal login before you turn in your CAC. Create a username and password, set up security questions, and register a personal email address and phone number rather than your .mil email. DFAS recommends doing this at least 30 days before your separation date.10Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Preparing for Separation Update your mailing address in myPay to wherever you’ll actually be living, since paper W2s go to whatever address is on file.

Save your Leave and Earnings Statements from the last 12 months while you still have access. If a W2 problem surfaces after your myPay account is purged, the final LES is the best backup you have for reconstructing income and withholding. Members who skip this step often end up estimating on Form 4852 and dealing with an amended return afterward.
