Navy Federal Credit Union’s tax ID number is 53-0116705. That is the Employer Identification Number (EIN) the credit union uses to identify itself to the IRS, and it appears on every tax form it issues to members. Navy Federal’s own Tax Center lists the same number without the hyphen as 530116705; both formats refer to the same nine-digit ID.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center
Where the Number Shows Up
You will see the EIN printed in the “Payer’s TIN” box on every information return Navy Federal mails or posts to your account, including Forms 1099-INT, 1099-R, 1098, and 5498.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Form 1099-INT – Interest Income If you cannot find a form, the number is also published on Navy Federal’s Tax Center page.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center

Which Navy Federal Tax Forms Carry the EIN
The form you receive depends on the products you hold. Each one lists Navy Federal’s EIN in the payer field and your Social Security Number in the recipient field so both you and the IRS can match the reported amounts.
- Form 1099-INT reports interest earned on savings, checking, and certificate accounts. Paper copies are mailed by January 31, and digital copies are available in online banking by the same date.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center
- Form 1098 reports mortgage interest paid on a Navy Federal home loan during the year, also available by January 31.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center
- Form 1099-R reports distributions from retirement accounts such as IRAs. The IRS deadline for delivery is January 31.
- Form 5498 reports IRA contributions, rollovers, conversions, and the year-end fair market value of the account. It does not arrive until late May because IRA contributions can be made up to Tax Day in April.
If a form seems late, check online banking before assuming it is lost. Digital versions post at the same time paper copies are mailed, and the IRS accepts them as substitutes for the paper originals.
How to Pull Your Tax Documents Online
You do not need to wait for the mail. In the Navy Federal mobile app, sign in, tap More in the bottom-right corner, then tap Account & Tax Statements. The same section is available under account settings on the desktop site.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center
The EIN Is Not the Routing Number
These get mixed up because they are both long numeric IDs attached to the same institution, but they serve different systems.
- EIN (53-0116705) identifies Navy Federal as a taxpayer to the IRS. It appears on tax forms and legal filings and has no role in moving money.1Navy Federal Credit Union. Tax Center
- Routing number (256074974) directs electronic transfers and wire payments through the banking system. You give this to an employer for direct deposit or to another bank for a wire.4Navy Federal Credit Union. Wire Transfers
- Member ID and account number are internal identifiers for your specific accounts. They never appear on IRS forms.
If a form is asking where to send money, it wants the routing number. If it is asking who paid you interest, it wants the EIN.
Why an Incorrect TIN on File Matters
When you open an account, Navy Federal asks you to certify your Social Security Number on a W-9. If you fail to provide a valid TIN, or the IRS notifies the credit union that the TIN on file is incorrect, federal law requires Navy Federal to withhold 24% of your reportable interest and dividend payments and remit it to the IRS.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15 (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide Amounts withheld can be reclaimed as a credit on your tax return once the underlying issue is corrected.
When You Need the EIN Outside Tax Season
The number occasionally comes up in legal filings that need to formally identify Navy Federal as a financial institution, such as estate matters when the credit union holds accounts of a deceased member. If you run a small business banking with Navy Federal, you may need to supply the credit union’s EIN when certifying banking relationships to a third party.
