To file an amended tax return with H&R Block, reopen your original return in the same software you used to file it, activate the amended return option to generate Form 1040-X, edit the figures that changed, write a short explanation of why you’re amending, and either e-file or mail the result. If you didn’t originally file with H&R Block, you can still bring your return and corrected documents to an H&R Block office and have a tax professional prepare the 1040-X for you. The mechanics are the same either way; what changes is who does the typing.
First, Confirm You Actually Need to Amend
Form 1040-X exists for substantive changes to what you already filed: a late-arriving 1099, the wrong filing status, a missed deduction or credit, or a correction to income you reported. The IRS also accepts a 1040-X for certain elections made after the original deadline and for responding to IRS adjustments on a prior return.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
You do not need to amend for arithmetic mistakes or a forgotten attachment. The IRS fixes math errors during processing and sends a notice; if a W-2 or schedule is missing, it will usually ask for the document rather than reject the return.2Internal Revenue Service. If You Must Amend Your Return
Before you start, pull a copy of the original return (1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR) and any corrected source documents — a Form W-2c, a revised Schedule K-1, the new 1099 — that justify the change.
Amending in H&R Block Software or Online
If you filed through H&R Block’s desktop software or online product, open the completed tax file for the year you need to correct and find the amendment option, usually labeled something close to “Amended Return (Form 1040X).”
Turning on the amendment feature locks your originally reported figures into Column A of Form 1040-X. You then go back into the return and edit the sections that need correcting. The corrected numbers flow into Column C, and Column B automatically shows the difference. That difference is the whole point of the form: it tells the IRS whether you now owe more or are owed a refund.
The software will prompt you for a Part II explanation. This is mandatory, and skipping it can delay processing.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025) Keep it short and factual. Something like “Received corrected 1099-NEC after filing; adding $4,200 in previously unreported nonemployee compensation” is the right register.
A note on tiers: if you filed with H&R Block’s free online product, you may need to upgrade to a paid version to unlock the amendment feature. The software will e-file the 1040-X when the IRS permits it for the year in question; otherwise it will produce a printable copy for mailing.
Amending With an H&R Block Tax Professional
If the changes are complicated, or you originally filed somewhere else, an H&R Block office can prepare the 1040-X for you. You can go in person or upload documents to a virtual appointment. The tax pro handles the form, including the Part II explanation.
Fees vary by office and complexity. Expect a higher bill if multiple schedules need revision or if the preparer has to key your original return into their system because someone else prepared it. H&R Block doesn’t publish a flat rate for amendments, so ask for a quote before authorizing work.
You may pay nothing in one specific situation: if the error came from an H&R Block preparer or a defect in the software, the company’s accuracy guarantees generally cover the cost of the fix. A Peace of Mind extended service plan purchased with the original return may also cover certain amendment costs. If the amendment stems from information you didn’t provide or provided incorrectly, standard fees apply.
E-File or Mail
The IRS accepts electronically filed Form 1040-X for the current tax year and the two prior tax years.1Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return You’re limited to three e-filed amendments per tax year; after the third, additional electronic submissions for that same year will be rejected.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions Anything outside those windows has to go on paper.
E-filing carries a practical advantage beyond speed. If your amended return produces a refund for tax year 2021 or later, you can receive it by direct deposit when you e-file. Paper-filed amended returns always come back as a paper check.5Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return
If you’re mailing, print the two-page 1040-X plus copies of any schedules or forms that changed, and attach the supporting documentation. Missing attachments are one of the most common causes of delayed amended returns. The correct mailing address depends on where you live; the IRS publishes the current addresses by state.6Internal Revenue Service. The Refund Deadline
If the amendment is going to produce a refund, you have a hard window: file within three years of the date you filed the original return, or within two years of the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund For returns filed before the due date, the three-year clock starts on April 15, not the actual filing date.8Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund Miss that window and the refund is gone.
If the amendment means you owe more instead, no equivalent deadline blocks you from filing, but interest and penalties have been accruing since the original due date, so waiting costs money.
If the Amendment Means You Owe
Interest on an underpayment runs from the original April due date, not from the date you file the amendment. For the first quarter of 2026, the IRS individual underpayment rate is 7% per year, compounded daily.9Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026
A failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax applies for each month or part of a month the balance is outstanding, capped at 25%.10Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty A separate accuracy-related penalty of 20% of the underpayment can apply when the original error was due to negligence or a substantial understatement of income.11Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty
Don’t try to calculate interest or penalties yourself and add them to the amended return. The IRS computes those and bills you separately. Just pay the additional tax as fast as you can.5Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return For payment, you can mail a check with Form 1040-V attached to a paper-filed 1040-X, or pay electronically through IRS Direct Pay, which offers a specific option for amended-return payments covering the current year plus up to 20 prior years.12Internal Revenue Service. Your State Return Probably Needs Amending Too
Most states start their tax calculation from federal adjusted gross income or federal taxable income, so a federal amendment that changes either of those usually requires a state amendment as well. Some states set their own deadline for reporting a federal change, often 90 days after the federal amendment is filed, so check your state’s rules quickly rather than assuming they mirror the federal timeline.
If H&R Block handled your original state return, the software can typically generate the state amended form alongside the 1040-X. In an office, the same tax pro can prepare both, though the state amendment usually carries its own fee.
Tracking It After You File
Amended returns process much more slowly than original ones. Plan on 8 to 12 weeks, and up to 16 in some cases.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return: Frequently Asked Questions
