How to Check Your Tax Extension Status Online

To check the status of a tax extension, go back to the tax software or e-file service you used to submit Form 4868 and look for the IRS acknowledgment; most accepted or rejected responses come back within 24 to 48 hours. If you mailed the form, there is no online tracker, but an IRS tax account transcript will eventually show a Transaction Code 460 confirming the extension posted to your account.1Internal Revenue Service. Section 8A – Master File Codes Because the six-month extension is automatic once the IRS processes the form, checking status really means confirming the submission was received without errors.2Internal Revenue Service. The IRS does not review or approve Form 4868 in the traditional sense. You don’t need to give a reason, and the agency only contacts you if the extension is denied.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return There is also no dedicated “Where’s My Extension?” tool on irs.gov the way there is for refunds, so the confirmation you get from your e-file provider is often the fastest and clearest signal you’ll see.

Checking an E-Filed Extension

If you filed Form 4868 electronically, the IRS sends an electronic acknowledgment back through the same channel you used to submit.4Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 304, Extensions of Time to File Your Tax Return Sign back in to the software and look for a status screen, an email, or an in-app notification showing “accepted.” Most responses arrive within 48 hours of submission, and many come faster than that.

There is no “pending” holding pattern to wait out. The extension either comes back accepted or rejected. If your software still shows the return as transmitted with no IRS response after a couple of days, contact the provider directly. They can see whether the file left their system.

If You Paid Instead of Filing the Form

If you made a payment through IRS Direct Pay or the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System and marked it as an extension payment, the IRS automatically processes an extension of time to file when it receives that payment, without a separate Form 4868.3Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return In that case, your payment confirmation number is your extension confirmation. Save it.

Checking a Mailed Extension

Paper extensions are harder to verify. The IRS does not send a confirmation letter when it receives a mailed Form 4868, and there is no phone or online method to track a paper submission in transit. Anyone filing by mail should keep proof of mailing. A USPS Certified Mail receipt or Certificate of Mailing gives you a postmark that stands as evidence of timely filing if the IRS later claims it never arrived.

Your best option for confirming that a mailed extension was processed is to order an IRS tax account transcript. The transcript shows basic account activity, including Transaction Code 460 for “Extension of Time for Filing,” which appears once the IRS posts your extension to its system.1Internal Revenue Service. Section 8A – Master File Codes You can request a transcript through your IRS Online Account at irs.gov or by calling 800-908-9946. The tax account transcript is generally available for the current year and up to nine prior years through the online portal.5Internal Revenue Service. Be patient with this route. Paper processing takes weeks, sometimes longer during peak season. If you mailed the extension close to the deadline, the transcript may not reflect it for some time. That is why the mailing receipt matters as a backup.

Calling the IRS

As a last resort, you can call the IRS individual tax line at 1-800-829-1040, open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.6USAGov. Contact the IRS for Questions About Your Tax Return Have this ready before you dial:

Expect long wait times, especially between April and June. The phone agent can check whether an extension is on file, but they work from the same system that generates transcripts. If a paper extension has not been processed yet, the agent will not see it either.

What Accepted and Rejected Actually Mean

An accepted status means the IRS received your Form 4868 and your filing deadline is now October 15.2Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return Save the confirmation. You don’t need to do anything else until you’re ready to file the return, though you should pay any estimated tax owed to hold down interest and the failure-to-pay penalty.

A rejected status means the IRS could not process the extension, almost always because of a data mismatch. The common rejection codes for Form 4868:

  • R0000-500-01, name and SSN mismatch on the primary taxpayer. This is the most frequent cause.
  • R0000-092-02, invalid SSN or ITIN for the primary taxpayer.
  • R0000-503-02, spouse name and SSN mismatch on a joint extension.

A rejected extension means you do not have an extension. The original filing deadline still applies.

Fixing a Rejection

If your e-filed extension is rejected, correct the error in your tax software and resubmit electronically as soon as possible. Most software flags the specific field that caused the mismatch.

You also have a safety net. The IRS allows you to file a paper extension postmarked by the later of the original due date or 10 calendar days after the IRS notifies you of the rejection.9Internal Revenue Service. Age Name SSN Rejects, Errors, Correction Procedures That 10-day window matters. If your original e-filing was timely but bounced back after the April deadline, you can still land a timely extension by acting within those 10 days.

For a name or SSN mismatch, the underlying problem is often that your name doesn’t match Social Security Administration records, common after a marriage or divorce. You can verify records with the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. In the meantime, file the extension using the name the SSA currently has on file.

If no record of the extension turns up at all and you mailed the original, re-file before the deadline if you can, and use electronic filing this time for immediate confirmation.

Why the Confirmation Is Worth Chasing Down

The failure-to-file penalty runs 5% of the unpaid tax for each month a return is late, capped at 25%.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax If a return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax owed for returns required to be filed in 2026.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges A valid extension wipes out this penalty entirely, because the return is not late until after October 15.

The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax That one starts running from the original April deadline whether you have an extension or not. Interest also accrues on unpaid balances at 7% per year, compounded daily, as of the first quarter of 2026.12Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026

So confirming acceptance is what protects you from the penalty that is ten times larger. It does not, on its own, do anything about a balance due, which is why pairing your extension check with a payment (or a plan to pay) is the safer move.

State Extensions Are Separate

A confirmed federal extension does not extend a state return. Rules vary widely. Many states grant an automatic six-month extension that mirrors the federal timeline, and some accept your federal Form 4868 in place of a state form. Others require a separate state extension by the state’s own deadline. Check your state tax agency’s website after confirming the federal one; the federal acknowledgment will not shield you from state late-filing penalties if a separate state filing was required.
