If you sell on Gumroad, the platform handles sales tax for you on nearly every transaction. Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad has acted as the merchant of record worldwide, meaning it calculates the correct sales tax, VAT, or GST for each buyer’s location, adds it on top of your listed price at checkout, and remits it to the tax authority.1Gumroad. Gumroad Pricing: 10% Flat Fee For most digital product sellers, that removes the need to register for state sales tax permits or EU VAT. What Gumroad does not handle is the income tax and self-employment tax you owe on what you earn, and that’s where sellers most often get caught out.
What Gumroad Handles as Merchant of Record
Being merchant of record means Gumroad, not you, is the entity selling to the buyer for tax purposes. The platform calculates the applicable consumption tax, collects it at checkout, keeps it separate from your revenue, and files the returns. This applies whether the buyer came in through Gumroad Discover or through a direct link on your own site or social media.
The rate depends on where the buyer is, not where you are. Gumroad determines the buyer’s jurisdiction from their IP address, billing address, and card information, then applies the local rate. A buyer in Chicago and a buyer in Portland, Oregon will see different totals for the same product; a buyer in Hungary will pay 27% VAT while one in Luxembourg pays 17%.
Because the tax is added on top of your listed price, your gross revenue doesn’t change. Price a product at $50 and you receive $50 in gross revenue before Gumroad’s platform fees, regardless of what the buyer paid on top for tax.
Marketplace Facilitator States and Canada
Gumroad also holds formal marketplace facilitator status in a specific list of jurisdictions. This is a stronger legal designation than the general merchant-of-record framework: in these places, Gumroad is legally required to collect and remit tax on both digital and physical goods.2Gumroad Help Center. Indirect Taxes on Sales via Gumroad Discover
- Wisconsin, since March 2022
- Washington, since November 2022
- North Carolina, since August 2023
- New Jersey, since August 2023
- Ohio, since August 2023
- Pennsylvania, since August 2023
- Canada, since December 2023
Outside this list, Gumroad still handles consumption tax on digital products through its merchant-of-record framework, but coverage on physical goods may not reach every state or country where your buyers live.
Sales Where You May Still Owe Tax Yourself
Gumroad’s tax collection covers the vast majority of digital sales with no action from you. A few situations create gaps.
Physical Goods Shipped to States Not on the List
If you ship physical products to US states where Gumroad doesn’t hold marketplace facilitator status, you may need to collect and remit sales tax yourself. Whether you actually owe depends on economic nexus in the buyer’s state, generally triggered by exceeding $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions there in a year, though some states have dropped the transaction count. Sellers who fulfill physical orders through their own shipping process carry the most exposure here.
B2B Sales Into the EU
Selling to a VAT-registered business in the EU works differently. If the buyer provides a valid VAT identification number, the sale can be zero-rated under the reverse charge mechanism, and the buyer accounts for VAT in their own country.3European Commission. The Basic EU VAT Rules for Electronically Supplied Services Confirm with Gumroad how B2B transactions are processed on your account, and keep the buyer’s VAT ID on file in case of an audit.
Countries Where Gumroad Isn’t Registered
If you sell to buyers in a country or region where Gumroad has no tax registration or legal obligation, the platform won’t collect tax there. Cross that country’s local threshold and the responsibility to register with the foreign tax authority and remit tax falls to you.
What Gumroad Does Not Cover: Your Income Taxes
Gumroad handles consumption taxes, which are the taxes buyers pay on purchases. It has nothing to do with the tax you owe on the money you earn, and the amounts involved are larger than most new sellers expect.
Revenue from Gumroad sales is business income. A US-based sole proprietor (the default when you sell without forming a business entity) reports it on Schedule C of Form 1040.4Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040) The amount reported is your gross revenue from sales minus the consumption tax Gumroad collected, before Gumroad’s platform fees are subtracted; those fees come off as deductions on Schedule C itself.
On top of federal and state income tax, you owe self-employment tax to cover Social Security and Medicare. The combined rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1401 – Rate of Tax The Social Security portion applies to the first $184,500 of net self-employment income in 2026.6Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base Medicare has no ceiling, and an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies once net earnings pass $200,000 (or $250,000 for married filing jointly). You can deduct the employer-equivalent half (7.65%) when calculating your adjusted gross income, which lowers the income tax bill even though it doesn’t reduce the self-employment tax itself.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K
Gumroad issues Form 1099-K to US sellers who cross the federal reporting threshold of more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K The One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act restored this threshold after the lower $600 threshold was repeatedly delayed and never took effect.9Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill
Not receiving a 1099-K does not mean you don’t owe taxes. All business income is reportable regardless of whether an information return arrives in January. The amounts on a 1099-K reflect gross payments and may include consumption tax Gumroad collected as well as refunds or chargebacks processed later, so reconcile the form against your actual payouts before filing.
Quarterly Estimated Payments
Gumroad income has no automatic withholding. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year after credits and any withholding, the IRS requires quarterly estimated payments covering both income and self-employment tax.10Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes The due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year. Missing them triggers an underpayment penalty even if you pay the full balance at filing. Paying at least 90% of the current year’s total tax or 100% of last year’s tax, whichever is smaller, avoids the penalty.11Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 306 – Penalty for Underpayment of Estimated Tax
A seller netting $40,000 from Gumroad can easily owe $12,000 or more in federal taxes depending on filing status and other income. Quarterly payments spread that across the year instead of stacking it into a single April bill.
Deducting Gumroad Fees
Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per transaction for direct sales and 30% per transaction for sales through Gumroad Discover.1Gumroad. Gumroad Pricing: 10% Flat Fee Both are deductible as business expenses on Schedule C and reduce your taxable income directly.
Other common deductions for digital sellers include software subscriptions used to create or deliver products, the business-use portion of internet and phone bills, equipment such as computers and cameras (deducted immediately or depreciated), and a home office deduction if you have a dedicated workspace. The IRS standard is that every deduction be “ordinary and necessary” for your business. Gumroad’s payout statements capture your revenue and fees, but not your other costs, so keep a running record of expenses by category throughout the year.
If You Sell From Outside the US
Non-US sellers may be asked to submit IRS Form W-8BEN to certify foreign status, which tells Gumroad how to handle US withholding on your payments.12Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-8 BEN – Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding and Reporting Income from selling your own digital products to US buyers, while you operate entirely from outside the country, is generally not US-source income, so withholding typically doesn’t apply. Products involving licensed intellectual property or royalties can trigger different sourcing rules and withholding of up to 30%, potentially reduced by a tax treaty.
Consumption tax on your sales is handled by Gumroad the same way it is for US sellers. Your own country’s income tax on Gumroad earnings, however, remains yours to manage; most countries tax worldwide income, so sales to American buyers are still taxable at home even when no US tax was withheld.
