Form 8822 is the one-page IRS form you file to report a change to your home mailing address. Fill in your name, Social Security Number, old address, and new address, sign it, and mail it to the IRS service center that handles your old address. Processing takes about four to six weeks, and until it clears, IRS mail keeps going to the address you left.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 (Rev. February 2021) – Change of Address
Getting this done matters more than it sounds. The IRS can legally send a Notice of Deficiency to your last known address, and that notice counts as delivered whether it ever reaches you.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6212 – Notice of Deficiency Waiting until your next return to update the address can leave months of gap. Form 8822 closes it.
How to Fill Out the Form
The form is a single page. You’ll enter:
- Your first name, middle initial, last name, and Social Security Number.
- Your spouse’s name and SSN, if your last return was filed jointly. This is required even if only one of you is moving.
- Your old address, exactly as the IRS has it, with city, state, and ZIP.
- Your new address, including any apartment or suite number.
- The type of return the change applies to: individual income tax on Line 1, or gift, estate, and generation-skipping transfer returns (Forms 706 and 709) on Line 2.
Sign and date it. Joint filers both sign, unless one spouse is checking the box on Line 1 to establish a separate residence, in which case only the moving spouse signs and the other’s address on file stays put. If both spouses are moving to different addresses, each sends a separate Form 8822.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 (Rev. February 2021) – Change of Address
An executor, administrator, or authorized representative can sign for you, but they have to attach a copy of the power of attorney or a completed Form 2848. The IRS will not process the change if it comes from an unauthorized third party.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 (Rev. February 2021) – Change of Address
Where to Mail Form 8822
You cannot e-file this. It goes by paper mail to an IRS service center, and the routing is based on your old home address, not the new one. That feels backward until you remember your records still sit under the old location.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 (Rev. February 2021) – Change of Address
For individual income tax filers, three centers split the country:
- Kansas City, MO 64999-0023: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
- Austin, TX 73301-0023: Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, foreign addresses, APO/FPO addresses, and anyone who uses Form 2555.
- Ogden, UT 84201-0023: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Each is addressed to “Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service Center” at the city and ZIP above. If you checked Line 2 for gift, estate, or generation-skipping transfer tax returns, the form always goes to Kansas City no matter where you lived.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 (Rev. February 2021) – Change of Address
Certified mail is not required, but it gives you proof of delivery. Under 26 U.S.C. § 7502, a certified mail receipt is prima facie evidence that a document reached the IRS.3Internal Revenue Service. Memorandum Regarding USPS Delivery Confirmation and Section 7502 That receipt can matter later if you need to show you notified the agency by a specific date.
Processing Time and Confirmation
Plan on four to six weeks after the IRS receives the form.4Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Mail may still go to the old address during that window, so if you’re waiting on a refund, sitting through an audit, or expecting anything time-sensitive, factor that in.
The IRS does not send a confirmation letter. You’ll know it worked when correspondence starts arriving at the new address. If you’re past six weeks and mail is still going to the old one, call the IRS to check whether the change posted.
Faster Ways to Update Your Address
Form 8822 is one of several equally valid methods. If you’re in a hurry, the others are worth knowing.
By Phone
You can change your address by calling the IRS. Have your full name, both addresses, and your SSN or ITIN ready. The IRS will verify your identity and the address on file before making the change, and phone changes generally post faster than a mailed form.4Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes
By Written Statement
A signed letter works too. Include your full name, old and new addresses, and your SSN, ITIN, or EIN, and send it to the service center where you filed your last return. Both spouses must sign if the last return was joint and you still live together. A representative sending the statement has to attach a power of attorney or Form 2848.4Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes
On Your Next Return
Filing your next Form 1040 or 1040-SR with the new address updates your records automatically. The catch is timing. Move in February, and your next return might not go in until April of the following year, which leaves a long stretch with the wrong address on file.
Why a USPS Change of Address Isn’t Enough
The IRS pulls weekly data from the USPS National Change of Address database and uses it to update taxpayer records.5Internal Revenue Service. Updating Taxpayer Addresses Using the United States Postal Service Change of Address Labels In practice, that automatic update often fails. The matching routine compares your name and address across both systems, and a small mismatch (a misspelled name, an apartment number formatted differently) blocks the update.
USPS also generally will not forward IRS refund checks. Those envelopes are marked “Return Service Requested,” which tells the post office to send them back to the IRS rather than forward.4Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes Treat the USPS filing as a backstop, not a substitute.
What You Risk by Not Updating
The serious risk is a missed Notice of Deficiency. Mailed to your last known address, it’s legally effective whether or not you see it.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6212 – Notice of Deficiency You have 90 days from the mailing date to petition the Tax Court. If that deadline runs out because the notice went to a mailbox you no longer check, the IRS can assess the full proposed amount, and you lose the chance to contest it in Tax Court before paying.
Refund delays are the more common problem. A paper check mailed to the old address, returned by the post office, goes back to the IRS. Getting it reissued requires filing Form 3911, Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund, to trace the payment and request a replacement.6Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund (Form 3911) That adds weeks, sometimes months, to a process that is already slow.
