Forgot to Add a 1099 on Your Taxes? What to Do Now

If you forgot to add a 1099 on your taxes, file an amended return on Form 1040-X to report the missing income, and do it before the IRS contacts you. Every payer that issued you a 1099 sent a copy to the IRS, so the mismatch will surface through the agency’s automated matching system eventually. Filing proactively almost always costs less than waiting for a CP2000 notice, because you control the deductions and basis figures that reduce the tax, and because acting first supports a reasonable-cause argument against penalties.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000

If the Filing Deadline Hasn’t Passed

Catching the mistake before the tax deadline (including any extension you filed) changes everything. You don’t amend at all. Instead, you file a corrected original return, sometimes called a superseding return, that replaces the first one. The IRS treats the last return received before the deadline as your original filing, so you owe no penalties as long as you pay the corrected balance by the due date. In most tax software this means submitting a new, complete return with the 1099 income added.

How to File Form 1040-X

Once the filing deadline is behind you, Form 1040-X is the correction tool. It uses a three-column layout: Column A for what you originally reported, Column B for the net change, and Column C for the corrected figures. Attach a complete corrected Form 1040 or 1040-SR that reflects the change, along with any revised schedules and a copy of the 1099 itself.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X – Amended US Individual Income Tax Return

Part II asks why you’re amending. Keep it short and specific. Something like “Amending to report $4,200 in interest income from Form 1099-INT not included on original return” is exactly what an examiner wants to see. No essay, no apology.

Which Schedules to Revise

The type of 1099 dictates which schedules need updating:

E-File or Paper

You can e-file an amended return for the current tax year or the two prior years using tax software.5Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns One condition applies: if you originally filed on paper, the amendment also goes on paper. E-filed amendments process faster and are easier to track. If you’re mailing a paper 1040-X for a joint return, both spouses must sign it even if only one person’s income changed. An unsigned form comes back.

If You Can’t Find the 1099

You don’t need the physical form. You need the numbers on it, and the IRS already has them. Request a Wage and Income Transcript through your online IRS account or by mailing Form 4506-T.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 159, How to Get a Tax Transcript or Copy of a Tax Return The transcript lists every W-2, 1099, 1098, and similar form reported under your Social Security number for the year. It’s the exact data the IRS matches against your return, so what’s on the transcript is what the agency expects on your amendment. You can also ask the payer for a duplicate; most banks and brokerages keep prior-year forms in their online portals.

What It Will Cost You

Failure-to-Pay Penalty

Additional tax that wasn’t paid by the original due date accrues a failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month, capped at 25% of the underpayment.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax The penalty can be waived for reasonable cause, and filing an amended return before the IRS contacts you helps that argument.

Interest

Interest runs daily on unpaid tax from the original due date until you pay in full, at the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges For the first quarter of 2026, the individual underpayment rate is 7%.9Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 Interest cannot be abated. The only way to stop it is to pay.

Estimated Tax Penalty

If the missing 1099 pushes your total underpayment over $1,000 for the year, a separate estimated tax penalty under Section 6654 can apply.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax You avoid it if withholding and estimated payments covered at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of the prior year’s tax (110% if the prior year’s AGI was over $150,000).

How Long the IRS Has

The IRS generally has three years from the date you filed to assess additional tax.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 US Code 6501 – Limitations on Assessment and Collection Even if a year or two has passed, amending is usually worth it inside that window.

If the Missing Form Is a 1099-NEC

A forgotten 1099-NEC hurts more than most other 1099s because it triggers self-employment tax on top of income tax. Start with Schedule C to report the gross income and subtract the business expenses you incurred earning it: home office costs, supplies, mileage, software, and so on. Those deductions reduce the profit that flows through to both income tax and self-employment tax, so skipping them is expensive. Net profit moves from Schedule C to Schedule SE, where SE tax is calculated.12Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes)

The SE tax rate is 15.3%: 12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare. For 2026, only the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings is subject to the Social Security portion.13Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base The Medicare portion has no cap, and an additional 0.9% Medicare tax kicks in once self-employment income tops $200,000 single or $250,000 married filing jointly.14Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 560, Additional Medicare Tax

Half of the SE tax is deductible as an adjustment to income on your 1040, which reduces your AGI. Include it when you recalculate. People forget this deduction and overpay.

Recheck Your Credits and Deductions

AGI controls eligibility for a long list of tax benefits, and adding income can quietly erase some of them. Don’t just add the 1099 and recompute the tax on it. Walk through every credit and deduction on the original return.

If you received advance premium tax credits through the Marketplace, an income change requires a revised Form 8962 attached to the amendment, and any excess advance credit you weren’t entitled to gets added to what you owe.15Internal Revenue Service. Premium Tax Credit: Claiming the Credit and Reconciling Advance Credit Payments

Higher AGI can also push you past the Roth IRA phase-out. For 2026, direct Roth contributions phase out entirely at $168,000 modified AGI for single filers and $252,000 for married filing jointly.16Internal Revenue Service. 401(k) Limit Increases to $24,500 for 2026; IRA Limit Increases to $7,500 If the added income tips you over, any contribution you already made may now be an excess contribution, subject to a 6% excise tax each year it stays in the account until it’s withdrawn or recharacterized.

Education credits, the Child Tax Credit, the student loan interest deduction, and other phased-out items also need a second look at the higher AGI.

Amend Your State Return Too

Most states with an income tax start from federal AGI or federal taxable income. When your federal number goes up, your state number almost always does too. Many states require an amended return within 30 to 90 days of a federal change, and the IRS shares adjustment data with state revenue departments. Check your state’s department of revenue site for its own amendment form and deadline. Some states accept the federal 1040-X as documentation; others want it attached to their form.

If You Get Hit with Penalties, Ask for Relief

Two paths are worth knowing. First-time abatement wipes out the failure-to-pay penalty for a single tax period if you filed on time, paid on time, and had no penalties for the three years before the year in question.17Internal Revenue Service. Administrative Penalty Relief Call the number on your IRS notice; the representative can often approve it on the spot. If the call doesn’t resolve it, submit Form 843.18Internal Revenue Service. Penalty Relief

When first-time abatement isn’t available, reasonable cause is the fallback. The standard is whether you exercised ordinary care and the failure wasn’t willful neglect. An erroneous information return, reliance on a qualified tax professional who had all the facts, a serious illness, or a natural disaster during tax season can all support the claim. An isolated mistake tends to be received more favorably than a pattern.

After You Submit

Amended returns take longer than originals. Allow 8 to 12 weeks, and sometimes up to 16.19Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X E-filed amendments usually land closer to the shorter end. Track status with the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool at irs.gov or by calling 866-464-2050 after three weeks.20Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Status updates lag actual processing, so a “received” status for several weeks isn’t a problem.

Pay as much as you can when you file the amendment. Interest and the failure-to-pay penalty keep running until the balance is zero. Use IRS Direct Pay, mail a check, or pay by card through an authorized processor. If the balance is more than you can pay at once, apply for an installment agreement before the IRS starts collection.
