If you only use Cash App for personal transfers — splitting rent, paying a friend back, sending a birthday gift — Cash App will not send you a 1099-K. The IRS requires payment platforms to report payments received for goods and services, and money moving between friends and family isn’t income to anyone. Cash App states this directly: users with only a personal account won’t receive a Form 1099-K.1Cash App. Form 1099-K
That’s the short answer. The longer one matters, because a personal account can still generate other tax forms depending on what you do inside the app, and “personal account” isn’t quite the shield it sounds like when actual business income is flowing through it.
What Actually Determines Whether a 1099-K Gets Issued
The account type on your profile isn’t what triggers reporting. The nature of the payment is. If you sell handmade jewelry through a personal Cash App account, those payments are business income to the IRS whether or not a form ever shows up. The tax obligation exists on the income itself.
Cash App offers a dedicated business account, marked with a green badge, so commercial activity can be kept separate from personal transfers.2Cash App. Create a Cash App Business Account That separation makes tax time easier and reduces the chance of a personal payment being miscategorized as business income.
For a 1099-K to be issued at the federal level, a business account has to cross both parts of the reporting threshold in a calendar year: more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions. Both conditions must be met.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K If you’ve seen headlines about a $600 or $5,000 threshold, that change never took effect. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in 2025, restored the $20,000-and-200-transaction standard retroactively back to 2022.4Internal Revenue Service. One boundary worth knowing: some states set their own lower thresholds. Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia, Maryland, Montana, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia require reporting at $600. Illinois uses $1,000 and four transactions. A personal account used purely for reimbursements still won’t trip these, but a small side business run through Cash App could.

If a 1099-K Shows Up That Shouldn’t Have
Personal payments sometimes get tagged as business transactions, and a 1099-K can arrive on a personal account by mistake. The first step is contacting Cash App to request a corrected form and keeping records of the request.
If a correction doesn’t come through in time, don’t hold up your return. The IRS has a specific procedure for zeroing out an erroneous 1099-K on Schedule 1 of Form 1040.10Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information You make two matching entries:
- Part I, Line 8z (Other Income): the erroneous amount, described as “Form 1099-K received in error.”
- Part II, Line 24z (Other Adjustments): the same amount, same description.
The two entries cancel out, so the 1099-K has no effect on your adjusted gross income, and the IRS sees the form was accounted for rather than ignored.
