Yes. Every Form 1099 a payer issues is reported to the IRS. The business or institution that pays you sends Copy A of the form directly to the IRS and gives you Copy B for your records, so by the time you sit down to file, the agency already has a record of the payment and expects to see it on your return.
That matters more than it used to, because for 2026 the reporting threshold on most 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC payments jumped from $600 to $2,000. A lot of smaller payments will no longer generate a form, but the income is still taxable, and the IRS still runs a matching program against the forms it does receive.
How Payers Send 1099s to the IRS
The payer files Copy A with the IRS, sends Copy B to you, and keeps Copy C. Any payer filing 10 or more information returns of any type during the year must file electronically.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 801, Who Must File Information Returns Electronically The old threshold was 250 returns, so most businesses with even a few contractors now e-file.
Form 1099-NEC is due to the IRS by January 31 of the following year.2Internal Revenue Service. Form W-2 and Other Wage Statements Deadline Coming Up for Employers Most other 1099s, including 1099-MISC, are due February 28 on paper or March 31 electronically.3Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099 Your copy generally arrives on a similar schedule, and if it doesn’t, the IRS has it anyway.
The $2,000 Threshold and Why It Doesn’t Let You Off the Hook
Starting with payments made after December 31, 2025, the minimum reporting threshold for several common 1099 categories rose from $600 to $2,000. This applies to 1099-NEC payments to independent contractors and to 1099-MISC categories such as rents, prizes, and medical payments.4Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099 The IRS will adjust the threshold for inflation beginning in 2027.
Not every category moved. Royalties and broker payments in lieu of dividends on 1099-MISC still trigger reporting at $10.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-MISC, Miscellaneous Information Dividends on 1099-DIV keep their $10 threshold.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-DIV And any payment with backup withholding must be reported no matter the amount.
Here is the trap. The higher threshold changes only whether the payer must issue a 1099. It does not change your duty to report the income. If a client pays you $1,500 for freelance work in 2026, no 1099-NEC gets filed, but you still owe tax on that $1,500. The IRS may not have a matching document, but the income is taxable.7Internal Revenue Service. 1099-MISC Independent Contractors and Self-Employed The 1099 is an enforcement tool for the IRS, not a permission slip for you.
What the IRS Does With the 1099
The IRS runs every 1099 it receives through an automated matching program that compares the payer’s numbers against what you claimed on your return. When something doesn’t line up, an examiner reviews the discrepancy and sends you a CP2000 notice proposing changes to your tax.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000 A CP2000 is not a bill. It’s a proposal listing the income the IRS thinks you missed along with additional tax, interest, and any penalties.
You generally have 30 days to respond, or 60 days if you live outside the United States.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP2000 Series Notice You can agree and pay, or dispute the notice with documentation. If you reported the income differently than the 1099 shows — for example, offsetting 1099-NEC receipts with deductions on Schedule C — send those records with your response. The burden is on you to show the return was correct.
Beyond the extra tax and interest, the IRS can add an accuracy-related penalty of 20% of the underpaid amount if the underreporting was due to negligence or a substantial understatement. For individuals, a substantial understatement means the reported tax was off by either 10% of the correct tax or $5,000, whichever is larger. If you claimed a qualified business income deduction, that percentage drops to 5%.10Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty
Where 1099 Income Belongs on Your Return
Reporting the income in the right place is what lets the matching program clear your return without a notice. The form you received tells you where it goes.
Self-Employment Income (1099-NEC)
Freelance and contractor income from 1099-NEC goes on Schedule C, where you report gross receipts and subtract business expenses to arrive at net profit.11Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule C (Form 1040), Profit or Loss from Business Net profit carries to Form 1040.
You also owe self-employment tax on that profit, calculated on Schedule SE.12Internal Revenue Service. Social Security applies only to the first $184,500 of net self-employment earnings in 2026.13Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base Medicare has no cap, and an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax applies to earnings above $200,000. You can deduct half of your self-employment tax as an adjustment to income.
Interest and Dividends (1099-INT, 1099-DIV)

Estimated Taxes on 1099 Income
Nothing is withheld from a 1099 payment. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments rather than a single check in April.18Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes For 2026 the due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, 2027. You can skip the January 15 payment if you file your full return and pay the balance by February 1, 2027.19Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Form 1040-ES
Miss a deadline or underpay, and the IRS charges an underpayment penalty even if you end up owed a refund. The safe harbor: pay at least 90% of what you owe for the current year, or 100% of last year’s tax liability, whichever is smaller.18Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes
Backup Withholding
Sometimes a payer must withhold 24% of your payment and send it to the IRS before you ever see it. This backup withholding usually kicks in for one of two reasons: you didn’t provide a correct taxpayer identification number on Form W-9, or the IRS told the payer you previously underreported interest or dividend income.20Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding
The withheld amount appears on the 1099 you receive and counts as a tax payment on your return, the same way W-2 withholding does. If it exceeds your actual liability, you get the difference back. The simplest way to avoid it is to return a correct W-9 when any payer asks.
If a 1099 Is Wrong or Never Arrives
Contact the payer first and ask for a corrected form. Payers can file a corrected 1099 with the IRS at any time. If the payer doesn’t respond by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. You’ll need your name, address, Social Security number, and the payer’s contact information. The IRS will reach out and request the correction.21Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect
If nothing has arrived by tax day, file with the best information you have. Form 4852 works as a substitute to estimate the figures. If a corrected 1099 shows up later and the numbers differ, amend with Form 1040-X.21Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Don’t let a missing form delay your return.
Your State Probably Sees It Too
The IRS isn’t the only agency with a copy. Through the Combined Federal/State Filing Program, the IRS forwards 1099 data to participating state tax agencies for filers enrolled in the program. Coverage includes 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, 1099-B, 1099-R, and 1099-K.22Internal Revenue Service. FIRE System Test Files and Combined Federal/State Filing (CF/SF) Program If your payer participates, your state already has the same income data the IRS does and can run the same matching checks. Some states also require separate 1099 filings on top of the federal program.
