When It Comes on a W-2 Instead

If the institution paying you has the right to control and direct how you perform the work, you’re a common-law employee, and the stipend is wages.4IRS. When No 1099 Arrives: Scholarship and Fellowship Stipends

A stipend received as part of a qualified scholarship or fellowship can be excluded from income if you are a degree candidate and the money goes to qualified expenses:6IRS. IRS Topic No. 421

  • Tuition and fees required for enrollment
  • Books, supplies, and equipment required for courses

Amounts spent on room and board, travel, or optional equipment are taxable. So is any portion tied to required services like teaching or research.6IRS. What You Owe if No Form Is Issued

You still have to report taxable stipend income even if no 1099 or W-2 shows up.8IRS. IRS: Taxable and Nontaxable Income The $600 figure is the payer’s filing threshold, not a floor for your own tax liability.

If the stipend is self-employment income, report it on Schedule C and figure the self-employment tax on Schedule SE.9IRS.
