Yes, every dollar of affiliate marketing income needs a Taxpayer Identification Number attached to it, so you do need a tax ID number for affiliate marketing. If you run the business by yourself and haven’t registered an entity, your Social Security Number is already that tax ID. If you have a co-owner, or you’ve formed a partnership or corporation, you’re required to get an Employer Identification Number instead. Solo marketers can also request an EIN voluntarily, and many do.
What Counts as a Tax ID
A Taxpayer Identification Number is the nine-digit number the IRS uses to track your tax activity.1Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Identification Numbers Three kinds show up in affiliate marketing:
- A Social Security Number (SSN) is the default tax ID for U.S. citizens and eligible residents.2Social Security Administration. Request a Social Security Number for the First Time
- An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is for nonresident and resident aliens who aren’t eligible for an SSN. It works the same way as an SSN for tax reporting but doesn’t authorize employment in the U.S.3Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
- An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a separate tax ID assigned to a business entity. Partnerships, corporations, and multi-member LLCs must have one. Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs can request one too.4Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number – Section: Who Needs an EIN
Which Tax ID You Need Based on How Your Business Is Structured
Your legal structure decides which number applies. The IRS treats each structure differently, and the tax ID follows from that treatment.
Sole Proprietor
If you haven’t registered a business entity with your state and you’re doing affiliate marketing under your own name, you’re a sole proprietor by default. Your SSN is your business tax ID. You give it to every affiliate network you work with, and you report the income on Schedule C of your personal return.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)
A sole proprietor is only required to get an EIN if they hire employees or need to file excise tax returns.4Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number – Section: Who Needs an EIN Nothing about affiliate marketing itself forces you to get one.
Single-Member LLC
A single-member LLC is registered at the state level but treated as a “disregarded entity” by the IRS for income tax purposes. The IRS looks through the LLC and treats the income as yours, reported on Schedule C the same way a sole proprietor would.6Internal Revenue Service. Single Member Limited Liability Companies
For income tax reporting, a single-member LLC can use the owner’s SSN or ITIN. The LLC only has to get its own EIN if it has employees, files excise tax returns, or elects to be taxed as a corporation.7Internal Revenue Service. Entities You can still request an EIN for banking or privacy, and the IRS will issue one.8Internal Revenue Service. Single Member Limited Liability Companies – Section: Taxpayer Identification Number
Partnerships, Corporations, and Multi-Member LLCs
Once more than one person owns the business, an EIN is mandatory. Multi-member LLCs, partnerships, S corporations, and C corporations all need their own.4Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number – Section: Who Needs an EIN A multi-member LLC defaults to partnership classification for federal tax purposes unless it files Form 8832 to elect corporate treatment.9Internal Revenue Service. LLC Filing as a Corporation or Partnership If you’re running an affiliate business with a partner, even informally, you need an EIN regardless of how large or small the operation is.
Why Solo Affiliate Marketers Often Get an EIN Anyway
Nothing legally stops a sole proprietor or single-member LLC from using their SSN forever. In practice, plenty of solo affiliate marketers apply for an EIN they don’t strictly need. Two reasons drive it:
Privacy. Every affiliate network asks for your TIN on a W-9. Handing your SSN to a dozen different companies is a real identity-theft risk. An EIN lets you satisfy the network without giving out the number that also unlocks your credit, bank accounts, and Social Security record.
Banking. Most banks require an EIN to open a business checking account for an LLC. Keeping business and personal money in separate accounts makes tax time much easier and lets you start building a business credit profile.
The W-9 Is Where Your TIN Actually Gets Used
Before any affiliate network pays you, it will ask you to fill out IRS Form W-9. That’s how the network collects your legal name, business type, and TIN so it can report what it paid you to the IRS.10Internal Revenue Service. About Form W-9, Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
For the 2026 tax year, the reporting threshold for nonemployee compensation is $2,000. If an affiliate network pays you $2,000 or more in a calendar year, it has to issue you a Form 1099-NEC.11Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 1099 The previous threshold was $600, and the change applies to payments made after December 31, 2025.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-NEC and Independent Contractors One copy goes to you, one to the IRS, and your TIN is what links the network’s report to your return.
What Happens Without a Valid TIN: Backup Withholding
If you don’t provide a valid TIN on your W-9, or if the IRS tells the network your TIN is incorrect, the network is required to withhold 24% of your payments and send that money straight to the IRS. You can recover it when you file your return, but a quarter of your earnings sits with the government in the meantime. Backup withholding can also apply if the IRS previously notified you about underreported interest or dividend income and you didn’t certify on the W-9 that you’re not subject to it.13Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 307, Backup Withholding Providing an incorrect TIN can also draw a $50 penalty per occurrence, up to $100,000 in a calendar year.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6723 – Failure To Comply With Other Information Reporting Requirements
The $2,000 Threshold Is Not a Tax-Free Allowance
This trips up more affiliate marketers than any TIN question. The $2,000 threshold is the network’s reporting rule, not your tax-free floor. If you earn $1,500 from one network and $800 from another, neither one has to send you a 1099, but you still owe income tax and self-employment tax on the full $2,300. The IRS requires you to report all income on your return whether or not you receive a 1099.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6109 – Identifying Numbers Marketers who work with many small programs can easily earn a substantial amount without seeing a single 1099-NEC in the mail. That income is still taxable.
How to Get an EIN
Applying for an EIN is free. The IRS online application is the fastest route, and an approved application gets you an EIN immediately on screen.16Internal Revenue Service. Get an Employer Identification Number
To use the online tool, your principal place of business must be in the U.S. or a U.S. territory, and you need the SSN or ITIN of the responsible party who controls the entity. You have to complete the application in one session; it expires after 15 minutes of inactivity and doesn’t save progress.16Internal Revenue Service. Get an Employer Identification Number Have your business structure, address, and responsible party information ready before you start.
If you can’t use the online tool, usually because the business is based outside the U.S., you can fax or mail Form SS-4. Faxed applications generally produce an EIN within four business days. Mailed applications take about four weeks. International applicants can also apply by phone.17Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form SS-4
