The Chase tax ID number can mean one of two things depending on who’s asking. If you need the bank’s own federal identification number for a tax form or legal document, JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. uses EIN 13-4994650, as shown in its SEC filings.1SEC. JPMorgan Chase Bank, National Association If Chase is asking you for a tax ID, the bank wants the Taxpayer Identification Number tied to your account — usually your Social Security Number for a personal account, or an Employer Identification Number for a business, trust, or estate. Getting either number wrong has a real cost: a mismatch triggers automatic 24% backup withholding on your interest and dividends.
Finding Chase’s EIN on Your Tax Forms
The most reliable source for Chase’s identification number is a 1099 you actually received from the bank. On Form 1099-INT, the bank’s number sits in the upper section under “PAYER’S TIN,” directly below the bank’s name and address.2Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-INT (Rev. January 2024) Chase mails 1099-INT and 1099-MISC forms by January 31 each year, and you can pull them up online by signing in at chase.com and going to your tax documents.3Chase. One caution: JPMorgan Chase operates through several legal entities, so the EIN on your 1099 can differ depending on whether the form is for a deposit account, an investment account, or a credit card. Use the number printed on the specific form you’re reporting from rather than assuming a single EIN covers everything.
Which TIN Goes on Your Chase Account
The correct TIN follows the legal owner of the account, not whoever is managing it day to day. For a standard personal checking, savings, or investment account, that’s your SSN. Joint accounts generally use the primary holder’s SSN, with each holder reporting the income they’re responsible for on their own return.
Business accounts use the entity’s EIN.4Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN) A sole proprietor without an EIN can use their SSN, but hiring employees or forming an LLC taxed as a partnership or corporation means getting a separate EIN. Nonresidents and others who aren’t eligible for an SSN use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number instead.5Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)
Two account types trip people up. Custodial accounts under UGMA or UTMA use the child’s SSN, because the child is the legal owner; the custodian manages the money but the income belongs to the minor. Revocable living trusts, while the grantor is alive, are treated as grantor trusts by the IRS, and the income is reported on the grantor’s personal return under their SSN. The trust doesn’t need its own EIN until the grantor dies and it becomes irrevocable.6Internal Revenue Service. When to Get a New EIN
How to Submit or Update Your TIN at Chase
U.S. Persons Use Form W-9
U.S. citizens, resident aliens, and domestic entities certify their TIN by submitting IRS Form W-9. The form asks for your name, address, TIN, and a signature confirming the number is correct and that you’re not subject to backup withholding. Individuals list an SSN; corporations and partnerships list an EIN.7Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024) Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification
Chase accepts a W-9 through its online banking portal, at any branch, or by mail to the tax reporting address printed on your statements or in the tax section of chase.com. Online or in-person submissions are verified faster than mailed forms.
Foreign Persons Use the W-8 Series
Nonresident aliens earning interest, dividends, or other reportable income from Chase submit a form from the W-8 series instead. Individual nonresidents typically use Form W-8BEN to establish foreign status and claim a reduced treaty withholding rate where one applies. Foreign entities use W-8BEN-E, and those with income connected to a U.S. trade or business use W-8ECI.8Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form W-8BEN (10/2021)
W-8 forms expire at the end of the third calendar year after signing. A form signed in June 2026 stays valid through December 31, 2029. Let it lapse and Chase must withhold at the full 30% statutory rate on your U.S.-source income until you file a replacement.9Internal Revenue Service. Tax Withholding Types
What Happens If Your TIN Is Missing or Wrong
When Chase has no valid TIN for your account, or when the IRS tells the bank your TIN is incorrect, federal law requires the bank to start backup withholding at 24% on reportable payments such as interest and dividends. That amount comes off the top and goes directly to the IRS.10Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 307, Backup Withholding The rate is set by 26 U.S.C. § 3406, which ties it to the fourth-lowest individual income tax bracket.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 3406 – Backup Withholding
The withheld money isn’t gone. It shows up on the 1099 Chase sends you and you claim it as a credit when you file your Form 1040. But having 24% skimmed off every interest payment for months while paperwork sorts itself out is far easier to avoid than to reverse.
The B-Notice Process
When the IRS flags a TIN mismatch, Chase receives a CP2100 or CP2100A notice from the government and then sends you a “B-Notice” with a blank W-9. There are two levels.12Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding “B” Program
A first B-Notice can be cleared by completing the enclosed W-9 with the correct TIN, signing it, and returning it to Chase. If you don’t respond within 30 business days of the date Chase received the IRS notice, backup withholding begins.
A second B-Notice, issued when the same account is flagged again within three years, needs more than a W-9. You’ll have to provide a copy of your Social Security card or an IRS Letter 147C verifying your name and EIN. Resolution takes longer at this stage, and while the issue is unresolved Chase may restrict your ability to open new accounts or run certain transactions.
When You Need to Update or Get a New TIN
A marriage or divorce doesn’t change your SSN, but you should update your name with the Social Security Administration and then with Chase so the records match. A name that doesn’t match SSA files is one of the most common reasons a B-Notice arrives.
Business accounts follow different rules. Changing a business name or address does not require a new EIN. Changing your legal structure usually does — for example, converting a sole proprietorship to a corporation, or dissolving an LLC and forming a new entity. Once the IRS issues the new EIN, submit an updated W-9 to Chase so the bank reports income under the correct number going forward.6Internal Revenue Service. When to Get a New EIN
A single-member LLC that hasn’t elected corporate tax treatment and has no employees can keep using the owner’s SSN or existing sole-proprietor EIN. A new EIN is only needed once employees are added, corporate tax treatment is elected, or the entity is restructured.
