Because Cash App Taxes doesn’t support e-filing Form 1040-X, a Cash App Taxes amended return is a hybrid job: you can prepare the 1040-X in the platform for free, but you have to print it, sign it, and mail it to the IRS yourself. The work is mostly about pulling the right figures off your original return, filling the three-column format correctly, and sending everything to the right processing center. Most amended returns take 8 to 12 weeks to process; some run to 16.
Decide Whether You Actually Need to Amend
Not every mistake calls for a 1040-X. The IRS catches and corrects simple math errors during processing, so a miscalculation on its own isn’t worth amending. If you forgot to attach a W-2 or another form, the IRS will usually send a notice asking for the missing document rather than making you refile.
An amendment is the right move for changes that affect the bottom line: switching your filing status, reporting income you left off, adding a deduction or credit you missed, or correcting the number of dependents you claimed.1Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return The common trigger is a corrected W-2 or 1099 that arrives after you’ve already filed. If you’re amending to claim a larger refund, you generally have three years from the date you filed the original return, or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.2Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund
When to File
Wait for your original return to finish processing before you send Form 1040-X. Filing an amendment while the IRS is still working on the original creates confusion and slows both down.3Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X
One exception matters. If you catch the mistake before the filing deadline, you can file a corrected return that replaces the original entirely. The IRS calls this a superseding return, and it’s treated as though the original never existed. Filing a superseding return and paying any extra tax at that point helps you avoid penalties and interest that would otherwise start running.3Internal Revenue Service. Amended Returns and Form 1040X
Download Your Original Return From Cash App Taxes
Every figure on Form 1040-X starts with what you originally reported, so you need an exact copy. Log into Cash App Taxes, go to the Tax Returns section, and download the PDF of your filed Form 1040 with all supporting schedules. Those line-by-line numbers become the Column A entries on the 1040-X.
Grab any state return in the same visit. If the federal amendment changes your adjusted gross income, taxable income, or credits, those changes will almost certainly move your state numbers too.
Fill Out Form 1040-X
The form uses three columns to show exactly what changed and by how much.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
- Column A (Original Amount): the figures from your filed return, pulled from the PDF.
- Column B (Net Change): the difference between the original and corrected amounts. A positive number is an increase; a decrease goes in parentheses.
- Column C (Correct Amount): what the figure should have been. This is the number the IRS uses going forward.
Work down lines 1 through 23, filling each column. Then recalculate your tax liability from the corrected taxable income in Column C, using the tax tables or worksheets for the year you’re amending, not the current year.
Explanation of Changes
Part II asks why you’re amending, in plain language. This is what the IRS agent reads first, and a vague explanation slows things down. Be specific. “Received corrected Form 1099-NEC from [payer] showing $5,000 additional nonemployee compensation not included on original return” beats “correcting income” by a lot. Say what changed, why, and how it affects the tax figures.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-X – Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return
What to Attach
Include any schedule or form whose numbers changed. Unreported self-employment income means attaching a corrected Schedule C and Schedule SE; a new 1099 means attaching a copy. Don’t resend forms that weren’t affected, and don’t resend the whole return. Sign and date the 1040-X before it goes in the envelope, or the IRS won’t treat it as valid.
If You Owe More Tax
Pay as soon as you can. Interest and penalties run from the original due date of the return, not from when you file the amendment, so waiting only adds to the bill.
The failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the balance is outstanding, capped at 25% of the amount owed.5Internal Revenue Service. Under federal law, the certified mail receipt is evidence of delivery and fixes the postmark date as your filing date.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying Keep the receipt. If the IRS later says it never received the amendment, or argues about the date, that slip is your proof.
Track the Amended Return
The IRS Where’s My Amended Return tool shows a status starting about three weeks after you mail the form. You’ll need your Social Security number, date of birth, and ZIP code. The tool cycles through three statuses: Received, Adjusted, and Completed. Processing typically runs 8 to 12 weeks, and some amendments stretch to 16. The IRS reviews these manually, which is why the wait is long.11Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return A paper-filed amendment that produces a refund typically comes back as a check by mail.
Don’t Forget the State Return
A federal amendment that changes your adjusted gross income, deductions, or credits almost always affects your state return too. Most states require a separate state amendment reflecting the federal changes, on their own form and their own deadline.1Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return State processing often runs longer than federal, sometimes past 20 weeks.
Contact your state’s tax agency for the right form, address, and deadline. Some states give a specific window (often 90 days to a year) after a federal change is finalized; others apply their general statute of limitations. Don’t assume the state adjusts automatically off your federal amendment. In most cases you have to file separately, and skipping that step can mean penalties for an incorrect state return.
