Yes, you can use a PO box on your tax return, but the IRS expects it only when the post office does not deliver mail to your street address. If you have home delivery and still list a PO box, the return will process normally, but the address you put on that return becomes the address the IRS uses for everything afterward, including notices with deadlines you cannot miss.
What the IRS Instructions Say About PO Boxes
The language is consistent across IRS forms. Enter your PO box number instead of your street address only if your post office does not deliver mail to your street address. Form 8822 states it directly, and the Form 1040 instructions follow the same pattern.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 – Change of Address
In practice, the IRS will not reject a return because you listed a PO box while having home delivery. But the guidance treats a PO box as a substitute for a street address, not a preference. If you live in a rural area without home delivery, in a place where mail theft is a documented problem, or at a physical address USPS doesn’t serve, a PO box is the right choice and the IRS expects it.
When a PO Box Will Not Work
A handful of tax filings draw a hard line between where you receive mail and where you physically are. A PO box can’t do both jobs on those forms.
Form SS-4 for an EIN
Form SS-4, the application for an Employer Identification Number, has separate lines for mailing address and street address. Line 4a accepts a PO box. Line 5a specifically instructs you not to enter one.2Internal Revenue Service. Form SS-4 (Rev. December 2025) The IRS needs to know where the business actually operates. If the mailing and street addresses are the same, you can leave line 5a blank.
FBAR Filings
If you file a Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) with FinCEN, the rules are tighter. An individual living in the United States must provide the street address of their U.S. residence. A non-street address like a PO box is allowed only when no other street address information is available.3Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. FBAR Line Item Filing Instructions So a taxpayer with foreign accounts needs a physical U.S. address on file regardless of what appears on the 1040.
Sending Mail by Private Delivery Service
FedEx, UPS, and other private carriers cannot deliver to PO boxes. If you’re mailing a return or payment to the IRS by one of these services, you must use the submission processing center’s street address, not its PO box. The IRS publishes those street addresses for Austin, Kansas City, and Ogden.4Internal Revenue Service. Submission Processing Center Street Addresses for Private Delivery Service (PDS) This applies to where you’re sending the return, not what you write on it.
The Real Risk: Your Last Known Address
The address on your most recent return becomes your “last known address” for IRS purposes, and that carries legal weight. When the IRS decides you owe additional tax, it must send a statutory notice of deficiency to that address by certified mail. If the IRS mails it to the correct address on file, the notice is legally valid whether or not you actually read it.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6212 – Notice of Deficiency
That notice opens a 90-day window to petition the U.S. Tax Court, or 150 days if you’re outside the country. The deadline can’t be extended by the IRS or anyone else. Miss it because the notice went to a PO box you stopped checking or one that expired, and you lose the right to challenge the proposed tax in Tax Court before paying it.6Taxpayer Advocate Service. 90-Day Notice of Deficiency Audit reconsideration is still available afterward, but it’s slower and leaves you with less leverage.
This is the practical reason to think carefully about a PO box. A home address is hard to overlook. A PO box requires you to actively check it. If you rely on one for IRS mail, treat it like a bank account: never let it lapse, and check it on a schedule.
Commercial and Virtual Mailboxes
A commercial mailbox from a service like The UPS Store, or a virtual mailbox provider, gives you an actual street address rather than a PO box number. To the IRS, that street address looks like any other physical location. It sidesteps the PO box restriction entirely, which matters most on Form SS-4 and for taxpayers who move often and want a stable point of contact.
Virtual mailbox services also scan and forward mail digitally, which is useful for people living abroad who need a U.S. address on file. One caution: a commercial mailbox is still a mailing address for IRS purposes. It does not establish state residency, and it doesn’t serve as proof of a principal place of business where actual work happens.
How to Update Your Address With the IRS
When your address changes, whether you’re moving to a PO box, moving away from one, or just moving, notify the IRS directly. A USPS forwarding request is not reliable for tax purposes. The IRS may pick up a change from the USPS National Change of Address database, but it isn’t guaranteed, and not all post offices forward government checks even with a forwarding request on file.7USPS. Protecting a Paper Refund Check
Address problems and paper checks are a bad combination. The simplest fix is to skip the check. The IRS recommends direct deposit as the fastest and most secure way to receive a refund, deposited into an account in your name or your spouse’s.11Internal Revenue Service. Direct Deposit Is the Best Way to Get a Federal Tax Refund There’s nothing to steal from a mailbox and nothing to forward.

Filing From Outside the United States
U.S. citizens and resident aliens living abroad can list a foreign address on the return. Form 8822 has dedicated fields for foreign country, province, and postal code, and the IRS instructs you to spell out the country name in full and follow the country’s own format for postal codes.1Internal Revenue Service. Form 8822 – Change of Address Many expats also keep a U.S.-based virtual mailbox for IRS correspondence, which functions as a mailing address on the return but does not establish or change state tax residency.
