Can IRA Distributions Go Directly to Charity Tax-Free?

Yes. If you are at least 70½, you can send IRA distributions directly to charity tax-free through a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), up to $111,000 per person in 2026.1Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Amounts Relating to Retirement Plans and IRAs as Adjusted for Changes in Cost-of-Living The money leaves your IRA, goes straight to the charity, and never appears as income on your tax return. A married couple with separate IRAs can move up to $222,000 combined.

How the Direct Transfer Has to Work

The transfer is excluded from your gross income under Internal Revenue Code Section 408(d)(8).2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 Individual Retirement Accounts The rule that makes this work is strict: funds must move directly from your IRA custodian to the charity. If the money lands in your personal bank account first, even for a day, the entire distribution becomes taxable and loses QCD treatment. Your custodian either wires the funds or issues a check payable to the charity. If they send that check to you to forward, don’t endorse it or run it through your account; just pass it along.

The point of routing the gift this way is that it keeps the withdrawal out of your adjusted gross income entirely. That matters more than a normal charitable deduction, because AGI drives Medicare premiums, the taxable share of Social Security, and other calculations a Schedule A donation cannot touch.

Who Can Do It

You Must Be 70½

You must be at least 70½ years old on the date the distribution is made.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 Individual Retirement Accounts Not the year you turn 70½ — the actual date. That threshold is separate from Required Minimum Distributions, which now start at 73.3Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plan and IRA Required Minimum Distributions FAQs You can make QCDs during the roughly two-and-a-half-year gap before RMDs begin.

Which Accounts Qualify

Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, and inherited IRAs all work. For an inherited IRA, the beneficiary must personally be 70½; the original owner’s age doesn’t carry over.

SEP and SIMPLE IRAs qualify only if they are no longer “ongoing,” meaning no employer contributions went in during the year you want the QCD to count.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 Individual Retirement Accounts If your employer funded your SEP this year, roll it into a separate traditional IRA first, then request the QCD from that account.

Employer plans — 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) — do not qualify directly. Roll them into a traditional IRA and the funds become eligible.

Which Charities Qualify

The recipient must be a public charity eligible for tax-deductible contributions under Section 170(b)(1)(A).4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 170 Charitable Etc Contributions and Gifts Churches, hospitals, universities, and similar operating charities all qualify. Three types don’t: donor-advised funds, private non-operating foundations, and supporting organizations under Section 509(a)(3). Verify status through the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search before you send the transfer request.

How Much You Can Send

For 2026, the cap is $111,000 per individual across all your IRAs combined.1Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Amounts Relating to Retirement Plans and IRAs as Adjusted for Changes in Cost-of-Living Spouses each get their own $111,000 if both are 70½ and each has an IRA. The limit resets every January 1 and cannot be carried forward. Unused room simply expires.

Inside that ceiling, a separate $55,000 sub-limit applies if you use the one-time election to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust (covered below).

Why This Beats Withdrawing and Then Donating

A normal IRA withdrawal followed by a charitable donation looks like a wash — same money in, same money out — but it isn’t, and here is why the exclusion matters more than a deduction.

The Standard Deduction Wipes Out the Regular Route

For 2026, the standard deduction is $32,200 for joint filers and $16,100 for singles, with an extra $1,650 (married) or $2,050 (single) for taxpayers 65 and older.5Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 Including Amendments From the One Big Beautiful Bill Most retirees don’t itemize, so a conventional donation produces no tax benefit at all. A QCD works whether you itemize or not, because it removes the money from income in the first place.

Medicare IRMAA Surcharges

Medicare Part B and Part D premiums climb when modified AGI crosses certain thresholds. For 2026, the surcharge starts above $109,000 (individual) or $218,000 (joint).6Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. 2026 Medicare Parts A and B Premiums and Deductibles A retiree just above a bracket can use a QCD to drop under it. IRMAA looks back two years, so a 2026 QCD affects your 2028 premiums.

Other AGI-Driven Effects

Lowering AGI can also reduce exposure to the 3.8% net investment income tax, cut the taxable portion of Social Security, and affect income-tested credits. These indirect savings often make a QCD worth more than the tax on the distribution itself.

Using a QCD to Satisfy Your RMD

A QCD counts toward your RMD for the year, up to the QCD amount. If your RMD is $30,000 and you direct $20,000 to charity, you only need to take another $10,000 in taxable distributions to meet the requirement. The $20,000 stays out of income entirely.

QCDs count toward the RMD before any other distributions taken that year, so if you plan to use one this way, do it early. All QCDs must be completed by December 31 to count for that year.

The Post-70½ Contribution Trap

Since the SECURE Act of 2019, you can keep contributing to a traditional IRA after 70½ if you have earned income. But every dollar of deductible IRA contribution you make after turning 70½ reduces future QCD exclusions dollar for dollar.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 Individual Retirement Accounts The offset is cumulative and carries forward until absorbed.

Example: you deduct $7,000 in IRA contributions at 71 and another $7,000 at 72. At 73, the first $14,000 of QCDs will not qualify for exclusion. If QCDs are part of your plan, weigh that against any current-year deduction from continuing to contribute.

The One-Time Gift Annuity Election

SECURE 2.0 added a one-time option: a QCD of up to $55,000 (for 2026) to fund a charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder annuity trust, or charitable remainder unitrust.1Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Amounts Relating to Retirement Plans and IRAs as Adjusted for Changes in Cost-of-Living Unlike a regular QCD, which must be an outright gift, this version lets you receive lifetime income payments from the annuity or trust while still excluding the transfer from income.

You can only make this election once in your lifetime, in a single calendar year. Each spouse can make their own election from their own IRA. The $55,000 counts against your $111,000 annual limit. Starting the paperwork early matters — gift annuity setup takes time, and your custodian and the charity both need to coordinate.

Requesting the Transfer

Your custodian will not initiate this for you. Contact them and request the QCD, usually on a proprietary form. Have the charity’s full legal name, mailing address, and Tax Identification Number ready, along with the exact dollar amount and your preference for electronic transfer or paper check.

Electronic transfers are faster and less likely to go astray. If the custodian issues a check, it must be payable to the charity. Some custodians mail it directly; others send it to you to forward. If you receive it, forward it unopened and uncashed. The distribution date is when funds leave the IRA, not when the charity deposits them.

Give yourself time. Processing runs one to four weeks, longer in November and December. Submitting by mid-November leaves a buffer for the December 31 deadline.

Reporting the QCD on Your Return

Your custodian will send a Form 1099-R showing the full distribution in Box 1.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-R Distributions From Pensions Annuities Retirement or Profit-Sharing Plans IRAs Insurance Contracts Etc Box 7 typically shows code 7 (normal distribution). Beginning with 2025 returns, custodians may use code Y to flag a QCD, but it is optional and most won’t.8Internal Revenue Service. Entering Code Y in a 2025 Form 1099-R Box 7 Is Optional Box 2a often shows the full amount as taxable or is left blank. Reporting the exclusion correctly is on you, not the custodian.

On Form 1040, enter the full distribution on line 4a. On line 4b, enter only the taxable portion (total distribution minus QCD amount); if the whole distribution was a QCD, line 4b is zero. Check box 2 on line 4c to flag the QCD.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040

You cannot also claim a charitable deduction on Schedule A for the same money. The income was already excluded; deducting it would double up.

Keep a written acknowledgment from the charity for any QCD of $250 or more, showing the charity’s name, the amount, and a statement that you received no goods or services in return.10Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions Written Acknowledgments Store that letter with your 1099-R and a copy of the transfer request you submitted. Those three documents together establish the exclusion if the IRS ever asks.
