The benefits of filing taxes even when you don’t have to are real and often large: a refund of any tax withheld from your paychecks, refundable credits like the EITC and Child Tax Credit that pay out even at zero tax liability, work credits toward Social Security and Medicare, a verified income record for lenders and financial aid, and a legal clock that eventually closes the tax year against IRS review. Skip filing, and none of that happens on its own.
Refunds and Refundable Credits You Only Get by Filing
If any federal income tax came out of your paychecks during the year, that money stays with the IRS until you file a return and ask for it back. There is no automatic refund. You submit Form 1040, the numbers show you overpaid, and the refund follows.
Refundable credits are the bigger prize for many low- and moderate-income workers, because they pay out even when you owe nothing. The Earned Income Tax Credit is the largest of these. For the 2026 tax year, the maximum EITC ranges from $664 for a worker with no children up to $8,231 for a family with three or more qualifying children. The IRS does not send it to you on its own. You have to file to claim it.
The Child Tax Credit is worth up to $2,200 per qualifying child for 2026, and the refundable Additional Child Tax Credit portion pays up to $1,700 per child.1Internal Revenue Service. Child Tax Credit The refundable piece begins once earned income passes $2,500 and grows from there. No return, no credit.
Roughly half the states run their own earned income credits, usually calculated as a percentage of the federal EITC. They ride along with the federal return, so if you don’t file federally, the state credit is gone too. In the more generous states, that add-on runs 20% to 35% of the federal amount.
If You Get Marketplace Health Insurance
Anyone who buys ACA marketplace coverage and receives advance premium tax credits must file a return with Form 8962 attached, even if income would otherwise fall below the filing threshold.2Internal Revenue Service. Questions and Answers on the Premium Tax Credit Skip it, and the IRS cuts off advance subsidies in future years, leaving you owing the full unsubsidized premium until you’re back in compliance. Filing also lets you claim additional Premium Tax Credit if your actual income came in lower than you estimated at enrollment.
The Three-Year Cliff on Refund Claims
This is the detail that costs non-filers the most money. You have three years from a return’s original due date to claim a refund. After that, the money belongs to the Treasury, permanently, no matter how much it is.3Internal Revenue Service. More Than $1 Billion in 2021 Tax Refunds Still Unclaimed The IRS announces billions in unclaimed refunds from prior years on a regular schedule, and almost all of it belongs to people who never filed.
The rule covers withholding, estimated tax payments, and refundable credits alike. Withholding from a 2023 paycheck? You have until April 15, 2027, to file that year’s return and recover it. One day past the deadline, and the IRS is legally barred from paying. That alone is often reason enough to file.
Protecting Your Social Security and Medicare
Social Security uses your reported earnings to award the work credits that decide whether you qualify for retirement, disability, and survivor benefits, and how much they pay. You need 40 credits over a working lifetime, roughly ten years, to qualify for retirement benefits.4Social Security Administration. Social Security Credits and Benefit Eligibility In 2026, one credit costs $1,890 in covered earnings, with a four-credit annual cap reached at $7,560.5Social Security Administration. How You Earn Credits
For employees whose wages run through FICA withholding, employer reporting usually gets that earnings data to the Social Security Administration on its own. The situation is different for self-employed workers. Self-employment earnings are reported on Schedule SE, which is part of the tax return. Skip the return and the SSA may show zero earnings for that year, even if you actually earned well above the credit threshold. Missing years shrink monthly benefits later, and in a bad case leave someone short of the 40-credit minimum entirely.
Those same credits control premium-free enrollment in Medicare Part A.6Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Original Medicare (Part A and B) Eligibility and Enrollment Fall short, and Part A carries a monthly premium that can reach hundreds of dollars. Filing every year you have self-employment income keeps the record intact.
Closing the Audit Window
Filing a return starts the three-year statute of limitations on IRS assessment. Once three years pass from the filing date or the return’s due date, whichever is later, the IRS generally cannot come back and demand more tax for that year.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6501 Limitations on Assessment and Collection Old tax years eventually close for good.
If you never file, that clock never starts. The IRS can look at the year whenever it wants, and it can prepare a Substitute for Return on your behalf using only what employers and financial institutions reported. Substitute returns are built to maximize the tax owed. They don’t include deductions, favorable filing status choices, or the credits you would have claimed. The bill runs higher than a real return would have produced, with penalties and interest layered on top.
Income Documentation Lenders and Aid Programs Require
A filed Form 1040 is a government-verified income record. Lenders, schools, and landlords treat it as reliable in a way that pay stubs and bank statements aren’t, because the numbers tie back to IRS files.
Mortgages and Other Loans
Most mortgage lenders want at least two years of filed returns before approving a home loan. The adjusted gross income on your 1040 drives the debt-to-income calculation and confirms your earnings are steady enough to carry the payment. Self-employed borrowers lean on returns even harder, because Schedule C is often the only formal business income record a lender will accept. Without filed returns, some lenders won’t take the application at all.
Federal Student Aid
The FAFSA pulls tax data straight from IRS records through a direct data-sharing agreement.8Internal Revenue Service. Tax Information for Federal Student Aid Applications Adjusted gross income, filing status, and income from work all feed into the Student Aid Index, which sets eligibility for federal grants, subsidized loans, and many state aid programs.9Federal Student Aid. Filling Out the FAFSA Form If the required return hasn’t been filed, the data transfer can’t happen and aid stalls or is denied.
Rental Applications
In tight rental markets, landlords and property managers often ask for a copy of your most recent Form 1040. It’s a standardized annual income snapshot that’s harder to fake than a bank statement. Not having one on hand slows or sinks the application.
A Shield Against Tax Identity Theft
Filing early is one of the strongest defenses against tax identity theft. A thief uses your Social Security number to file a fake return early in the season, claims your refund, and disappears. When your real return arrives later, the IRS rejects it as a duplicate, and cleaning it up takes months. The earlier you file, the smaller the window for someone to get there first.
The IRS also issues an Identity Protection PIN, a six-digit number that changes each year and must appear on your return for it to be accepted.10Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions About the Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) Anyone with an SSN or ITIN can enroll through their IRS Online Account. Once you’re in the program, no return can be filed under your number without that year’s PIN.
Filing for Free

E-file: Do Your Taxes for Free Access it through IRS.gov. Going directly to a partner company’s commercial site will not get you the free version.
