971 Amended Tax Return or Claim Forwarded: Codes, Timing, Refund

When your IRS account transcript shows a Transaction Code 971 with the description “Amended Return or Claim Forwarded for Processing,” it means the IRS has received your Form 1040-X, logged it to your account, and routed it to the Accounts Management division for a human reviewer to examine. It is an acknowledgment, not a decision. Nothing about your refund has been approved or denied at this point, and the code by itself is not a sign that anything is wrong.

What the 971 Line Actually Says

TC 971 is a general-purpose “Miscellaneous Transaction” marker. It does not carry a fixed meaning on its own; the Action Code paired with it defines what happened.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes The wording “Amended Return or Claim Forwarded for Processing” corresponds to Action Code 010, which tells you specifically that your 1040-X has been forwarded to Accounts Management for manual review.2Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8C Master File Codes

Amended returns cannot be processed by computer the way an original return can. A person has to compare your changes against what you originally filed and verify the numbers. The 971 entry is essentially the system saying: received, logged, in line for a reviewer. The date next to the code is when the IRS recorded the filing on your account.

One thing to keep in mind. TC 971 can also appear with other action codes for other reasons, such as a notice being mailed or an identity verification request being sent. Read the description text on the transcript line, not just the number.

The Codes That Come Next

Your transcript will tell you more than the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool, which typically lags behind. Here are the codes that matter once 971 has posted.

TC 570: Account Freeze

TC 570 means “Additional Liability Pending and/or Credit Hold.” It freezes your account so the IRS cannot release a refund or move credits while the amendment is reviewed.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes Seeing this is not evidence of a problem. The Taxpayer Advocate Service describes TC 570 as an indicator of a processing delay, not necessarily anything wrong with the return.3Taxpayer Advocate Service. The order of 971 and 570 varies. Sometimes 971 posts first and 570 follows. Sometimes it goes the other way. Both sequences are normal.

TC 571: Freeze Released

TC 571 reverses the TC 570 hold.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes When it appears, the examiner has finished the review and cleared your account for the next step. If a refund is coming, this is what has to happen first.

TC 846: Refund Issued

TC 846 is the one you’re waiting for. It reads “Refund of Overpayment” and posts with two pieces of information you care about: the scheduled payment date and the exact dollar amount, including any interest.1Internal Revenue Service. IRS Document 6209 – Section 8A Master File Codes Once 846 shows up, the refund is on its way by direct deposit or check depending on how the return was filed and what the IRS has on file.

How Long It Takes

The IRS generally allows 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X to be processed, and up to 16 weeks in some cases.4Internal Revenue Service. Wheres My Amended Return The clock starts when the IRS receives the return, not when you mailed it. Complex amendments involving multiple schedules, business income, or carryback claims tend toward the longer end.

You can check status with the “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool starting three weeks after the IRS receives your filing.5Internal Revenue Service. Refunds The IRS asks that you call only when the tool directs you to.4Internal Revenue Service. Wheres My Amended Return A transcript that still shows TC 570 with no matching TC 571 after 16 weeks is the point where a call makes sense.

What To Do While It Processes

Once 971 has posted, most of the work is waiting and watching. A few practical points:

  • Open any IRS mail promptly. The 971 sometimes accompanies a notice, and any request for documents or verification pauses the clock until you respond.
  • Pull your transcript through the “Get Transcript Online” tool every couple of weeks rather than relying on “Where’s My Amended Return?” alone. The transcript updates first.
  • Do not file a second 1040-X for the same year while the first is still in review. A duplicate creates confusion in the queue and usually adds months.
  • If you know your amendment results in additional tax owed, paying it stops interest from accruing further. Underpayment interest runs from the original due date of the return and, for the first quarter of 2026, is 7% per year, compounded daily.6Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026

Interest on the Refund

If your amendment produces a refund, the IRS may owe you interest on the overpayment. Interest runs from the date you originally overpaid until shortly before the refund is issued, but the IRS has a 45-day grace period from receipt of a processable amended return during which no interest is added.7Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Manual 20.2.4 – Overpayment Interest Because most amended returns take longer than 45 days, the TC 846 amount you eventually see often includes some interest on top of the tax refund itself.

Refund Delivery

How the refund arrives depends on how you filed. E-filed amended returns can receive refunds by direct deposit; paper-filed amendments have historically been paid by check.8Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions The IRS has also been phasing out paper refund checks under Executive Order 14247, beginning September 30, 2025.9Internal Revenue Service. The short version: a 971 line saying your amended return or claim was forwarded for processing means the IRS has your filing and someone will look at it. Watch the transcript for a 571 releasing the freeze and an 846 issuing your refund. Those are the codes that tell you the review is done.
