1099 Transcript: How to Request It, Wait Times, and Cost

To get a copy of your 1099 information from the IRS, request a free Wage and Income Transcript, which compiles every 1099, W-2, 1098, and 5498 filed under your Social Security Number. You can pull it instantly through your IRS Individual Online Account, order it by mail or phone for delivery in five to ten days, or submit Form 4506-T on paper. There is no “1099 transcript” as a standalone document at the IRS — the Wage and Income Transcript is what you want, and it’s free through every channel.1Internal Revenue Service. The Three Ways to Request It

IRS Individual Online Account (Instant)

The fastest route is the IRS Individual Online Account. Once you’re logged in, select “Wage and Income Transcript,” pick the tax year, and the PDF generates on the spot. You can download or print it immediately. The online transcript covers the current processing year and the nine prior tax years.1Internal Revenue Service. Setting up the account is the slow part. The IRS uses ID.me for identity verification, so you’ll need a personal email, a password, multifactor authentication (an authenticator app or text messages), a Social Security Number or ITIN, and a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport. ID.me then asks you to take a selfie so it can match your face to your ID.2Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools3Internal Revenue Service. Creating an Account for IRS.gov It takes some patience the first time. After that, the account gives you ongoing access without repeating the verification.

One limitation: the online transcript caps out at roughly 85 income documents per tax year. Active investors or people with income from many sources can hit that ceiling, and when they do, the online system won’t generate the transcript. Form 4506-T is the workaround.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

By Mail or Phone (5 to 10 Days)

If you’d rather skip the online account, the IRS Get Transcript by Mail page and the automated phone line at 800-908-9946 will send a transcript to the address on file. You’ll need your Social Security Number, date of birth, and the mailing address the IRS currently has for you. The transcript can only go to that address on file, not to a different one. Delivery runs about five to ten calendar days.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

Watch for one gap. The mail and phone channels only issue tax return transcripts and tax account transcripts. They don’t cover the Wage and Income Transcript, which is the one that has your 1099 data. To get that without using the online account, you’ll need Form 4506-T.

Form 4506-T (About 10 Business Days)

Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, is the flexible option. It handles any transcript type, lets you go back up to ten prior tax years, and can direct the transcript to a third party such as a lender or accountant. On line 6e, check the box for the W-2, 1099, 1098, or 5498 series transcript. Processing generally takes about ten business days, and there’s no fee.4Internal Revenue Service. What the Transcript Actually Shows

The Wage and Income Transcript pulls together data from every information return filed under your Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number — W-2 wage statements, 1099-NEC for freelance or contract work, 1099-INT for bank interest, 1099-DIV for dividends, 1099-R for retirement distributions, 1098 mortgage interest statements, and 5498 IRA contributions. Each entry lists the payer’s name, a partial payer identification number, the form type, and the dollar amounts reported.1Internal Revenue Service. It’s a summary, not a photocopy. Since late 2018, the IRS has redacted sensitive information on all transcripts to fight identity fraud. Social Security Numbers show only the last four digits, names appear as the first four characters of the last name, and street addresses are truncated to the first six characters. Dollar amounts, though, appear in full.

The transcript also leaves out a few fields that appear on the original 1099, most notably state tax withholding and the payer’s full mailing address. For a tax return or a mortgage file, the federal-level figures are almost always enough. If you need the state numbers or an unredacted copy of an original 1099, the payer is your only source. The IRS transcript won’t get you there.

If you specifically need a full photocopy of a filed return with all its 1099 attachments, that’s a different request: Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return. It costs $30 per return and can take up to 75 calendar days.5Internal Revenue Service. Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return Most people don’t need it. The free transcript covers what lenders and preparers typically ask for.

When the Current Year’s Data Shows Up

Payers generally have to file information returns with the IRS by the end of January. Wage and Income Transcript data for the current processing year typically starts appearing in the first week of February, once the IRS has processed those filings.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

The transcript only reflects returns that have actually been filed and processed. Late-filing payers, or batches the IRS hasn’t gotten to yet, won’t be there. If you pull the transcript early and see “No Record of Return Filed” for the current year, the data simply hasn’t loaded — it isn’t a problem. Check back in a few days or a couple of weeks.

If you file your return early, don’t wait on the transcript to populate. Rely on the paper 1099s your payers sent you, and use the transcript later as a cross-check.

Cost

Every transcript type is free, no matter how you request it. Online, by mail, by phone, or on Form 4506-T — nothing to pay.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them The $30 fee only applies to Form 4506, the full photocopy of a filed return.

If a 1099 Is Missing or Wrong

Sometimes a 1099 you’re expecting doesn’t appear on the transcript, or the amount doesn’t match what you have. Start with the payer — the bank, brokerage, or client — and ask for a corrected or duplicate form.6Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Don’t put off filing while you wait; the IRS expects a timely return either way.

If you still don’t have it by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have the payer’s name, address, and phone number ready along with your own identifying information, and the IRS will contact the payer on your behalf.6Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

When the filing deadline arrives and the form still hasn’t shown up, you can use Form 4852 to estimate the income and attach it to your return. If the actual 1099 arrives later with different numbers, file Form 1040-X to amend.6Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

Pulling your Wage and Income Transcript before you file is the cleanest way to catch anything you might otherwise miss: a freelance payment that slipped your mind, an old bank account still earning interest, or a 1099 that never reached your mailbox.
