When the same freelance income shows up on both a 1099-K and a 1099-NEC, you report it once. The overlap between a 1099-K and a 1099-NEC almost always comes from a payer who didn’t follow the IRS rule: payments settled through a third-party platform like PayPal, Stripe, or Venmo are supposed to be reported on the 1099-K by the platform, and left off any 1099-NEC the client issues.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC Many clients don’t track payment method and just send a 1099-NEC to everyone who cleared $600, so you end up with two forms for one paycheck. Your Schedule C should still show what you actually earned.
Why You Got Two Forms for One Payment
The 1099-NEC instructions say plainly that payments processed through a credit card, payment card, or third-party network are reported on Form 1099-K by the payment settlement entity and are not to be reported again on a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC If a client pays you $5,000 through Venmo’s business side, Venmo handles the reporting. The client shouldn’t also cut a 1099-NEC for that $5,000.
In practice, plenty of businesses issue a 1099-NEC to every contractor over the $600 threshold without checking how the money moved. The platform reports its total, the client reports its total, and the IRS matching system sees two information returns totaling more than you actually made.
Partial overlap is worse. A client who pays you half through a platform and half by check, then puts the full amount on a 1099-NEC, leaves you sorting out which portion is duplicated and which isn’t. Only your own records can answer that.
Report the Income Once on Schedule C
Sole proprietors and single-member LLCs report self-employment income on Schedule C (Form 1040).2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Line 1 shows gross receipts. That figure is your actual income, counted once, no matter how many 1099s reference it.3Internal Revenue Service. Schedule C (Form 1040) – Profit or Loss From Business (Sole Proprietorship)
Work through a concrete case. You earned $80,000 in freelance work. $30,000 came through a payment platform and shows up on a 1099-K. $50,000 came by check or bank transfer and shows up across several 1099-NECs. One of the platform clients, though, also mailed you a 1099-NEC for the $15,000 they paid through the platform. Add the information returns together and you get $95,000. Your gross receipts on Schedule C, Line 1 are still $80,000.
Don’t inflate the number to match the 1099s. Those forms are verification documents, not a running total to be summed.
Watch your tax software here. Most programs will happily import every 1099 and stack them into gross receipts unless you catch it. Before you file, look at the Line 1 figure and confirm it matches what you actually earned. If someone else prepares your return, flag the duplicate in writing and hand over your reconciliation.
Track Fees, Refunds, and Chargebacks Separately
The amount in Box 1a of a 1099-K is gross. The platform does not subtract processing fees, refunds, or chargebacks before it reports the number to the IRS.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-K Processing fees go on Schedule C as a business expense. Refunds and chargebacks reduce your gross receipts. Log these as they happen so you can explain the gap between the 1099-K figure and what you actually kept.
Keep a Reconciliation Spreadsheet
One spreadsheet solves most of these problems. Log every payment with the date, the client, the amount, the payment method, and which form reports it. Flag any payment that appears on more than one form. Most freelancers have a manageable client list, and a few minutes a month here will save hours if the IRS writes to you later.
Get the Wrong Form Corrected
If a client issued a 1099-NEC covering payments they actually sent through a platform, ask them to issue a corrected form. Many will fix it once you point them to the 1099-NEC instructions, which state that third-party network payments belong on the 1099-K and not the 1099-NEC.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC The correction can zero out the form or reduce it to only the non-platform portion.
If the client won’t cooperate, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. The agency can contact the payer and request a correction.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Don’t wait for a corrected form to file. Report your real income on Schedule C now, and keep documentation ready.
If You Get a CP2000 Notice
The IRS matches every 1099 filed under your Social Security number against the income on your return. When the totals don’t line up, the automated system sends a CP2000 proposing additional tax on what looks like unreported income.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000 The computer can’t see that two forms describe the same money, so 1099-K and 1099-NEC overlap is a frequent trigger.
You have 30 days from the notice date to respond, 60 if you live outside the United States.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 652, Notice of Underreported Income – CP2000 Ignoring it turns the proposed assessment into an actual one, with penalties and interest.
Your reply should explain, in writing, that the amount on the 1099-NEC represents the same payments already included in the 1099-K and reported once on your Schedule C. Attach the reconciliation spreadsheet showing which client payments correspond to which forms. Include bank statements or platform transaction records that confirm the duplicated dollars. Cite the specific Box 1a amount on the 1099-K and the Box 1 amount on the 1099-NEC that overlap. Concrete documentation closes these inquiries quickly.
If part of the notice is right and part is wrong, you can agree to the correct portion and dispute the duplicate. The CP2000 itself explains how to file a partial agreement.
Two Things That Don’t Change
The 1099-K reporting threshold is back to more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year.7Internal Revenue Service. IRS Issues FAQs on Form 1099-K Threshold Under the One, Big, Beautiful Bill If your platform activity stays under that, you may not get a 1099-K at all, which removes the overlap problem but not the tax. Platform income is still taxable and still belongs on Schedule C whether or not a form arrives.
Self-employment tax also runs off your Schedule C net profit, calculated on Schedule SE. Adding both forms together instead of reconciling would inflate your self-employment tax right alongside your income tax. Getting Line 1 right protects you on both.
